First time out of the vault
An odd thing happened to me whilst I was exploring the local parkland: I came across a small plastic bag filled with bottlecaps, half buried in the sandpit.
Now, finding rubbish buried isn't really the interesting thing.. how I reacted WAS interesting however.
The first thought I had was: Yes, now I can buy an X-Box 360!

...

I know.. sad. And that's how I felt about 10 seconds later. Profoundly depressed. Not just that I had realised I could no longer afford a 360, but that I had a moment where I was unable to distinguish between reality and computer games.

This happens to me more and more as I play certain games, mostly cRPG's. For example, when I first began playing KotOR I kept having an odd feeling like I was observing myself from a 3rd person perspective.

Every so often we all wished that we could have Force powers, or have Pokemon or something rediculous.. but I'm just curious as to how many people have moments where they really feel like they're in the fictional world they've been playing in for years.

Needless to say I kept the caps, and have been hording them for 5 months now in a box just in case a nuclear apocalypse DOES happen.

PS. What Deus Ex did to me was far more devastating in the long run. Few things are more annoying than going to an ATM and NOT being able to get free money! :roll:
 
The only RL Fallout experience I've ever had, was when - after playing Fallout for far too long, like many hours on end - I would still hear the music sometimes (especially the Gecko tune). That totally fucked me up. I would be in the supermarket, checking out the fruit department or the canned beans section and all of a sudden I would hear the Gecko tune. Creeped me out.

I did go through a period, though, where I thought it would be perfectly possible to describe RL people by using the SPECIAL system on them. And I recall this one time that my girlfriend called me, pretty late in the evening, and asked me if I could come over and all I could say was: "I'm sorry, I can't. I don't have any action points left."

When I was obsessed with Age of Empires 2 and had a hard time closing down the computer to go to bed, I would lull myself to sleep by closing my eyes and playing little skirmish battles in my head. It was the only thing that worked to catch some sleep in those days.

People generally think I'm weird. :roll:
 
While writing an analytical essay with the prompt based around Benjamin Franklin's personal virtues, I used Ultima IV's virtue system as a guideline for my essay, not actually alluding to the game itself in the essay mind you.
I ended up getting an 8, which is the second highest grade possible (a 9 being the highest) in the first semester of the class no less, with little experience in analytical writing.
A profound event to say the least, video games really did help me do better in school.
Well, a few times they did.

For Fallout the only thing I really experienced was something similar to alec, I kept hearing a Fallout 2 tune (Modoc in this case) when I was in quiet places, it was strange to be sitting in the park writing when all of a sudden I'd hear that eerie music softly waft from nowhere in particular.
 
Dang, today I just had one. Last night I was looking at the Schematics for the Rail-Launcher Gun, and I thought to myself "Darn, I need a crutch. . I remember seeing them, but I forgot exactly where. . . "

Today I was in the store, and I saw someone in crutches, and I thought "THERE THEY ARE!", then realized that I couldn't make the gun in real life. . . :lol:
 
Must agree with alec about the music. After a long Fallout playthrough, I will have a strange mixture of music from all of the cities I visited. Very strange.
 
I was playing Fallout 1; messing around in the Hub, when my brother remarked that the music sounded like porno music. Now the tune starts playing in my head randomnly, along with Metal Gear 2 music.

When watching porn? That would seriously creep me out. Or I would wank while playing Fallout. I don't know.
 
I remember a thread in The Order a couple of years back about someone's insomnia in which esteemed Orderite Luke recommended that they try taking Xander Root (and he did so not just once, but in two separate postings.)

He had meant to say "Valerian root," but now I can be counted on to make the same mistake whenever the subject comes around to holistic remedies of any sort.

I'm also often prone to hearing a ghostly Fallout soundtrack superimposed over my quiet moments... seems like that one's fairly common, though.
 
Like most of the people above me, I usually have Fallout music playing in my head. And I never walk around in the dark anymore for fear of Feral Ghouls. Those things scare the crap out of me.
 
Accidentaly kicking a girl in the groin during karate class and thinking:

''Girl was critically hit in the groin for 96 hit points. Her childbearing days are all but over'' lol ....

That and generally quoting Fallout 2 wherever possible to otherwise ignorant people lol... good times.
 
Well, I had a Fallout experience once...

It all started about a month ago. I was laying in bed, when suddenly this girl shook me and I woke up. She said I had to run, that they were looking for me, they wanted to kill me. I was like "Damn bitch," and slapped her, but she was like "No, we don't have time for that, here take this gun, you have to run!"

I stumbled out of my house and scratched my head as I wandered out of the cave. I was kind of confused because I didn't remember living in a cave, but I was quickly confronted by several hundred tiny, violent rats, so I didn't have time to ponder the implications of my cave house... thing.

The rats were easily dispatched, and after leveling up off of their sorry asses, I was feeling rather invigorated. Time to go find the water chip. I figured that the best place to start was a few blocks away, on V. Fifteenth's Avenue. So I pulled out my pistol and started on my way.

Along the way I made a pit stop at a bar called Shady Sands. It was a dump, and there was this lunatic called Aredesh screaming about how his daughter was kidnapped by raiders and that the scorpions would rise up and kill us all. After shoving him aside, I decided I'd had enough of this place, and left. Before I did, my friend Ian offered to join me, so I told him sure, but if he shot me in the back I'd kill him. He stared at me like I was a lunatic. All I could think to do was shake my fist at him and give him the meanest look possible.

So we get to Fifteenth street, and I couldn't help but think that somethin wasn't quite right. It was like a hole. I shrugged, and went down the hole.

Another freaking cave! What is it with this place?! Anyway, there was no water chip, but there were more rats, plus I found a really neat leather jacket! Oh yeah, and Ian fucking shot me! Alas, poor Ian did not make it out of the cave alive, for I told him, if he shot me, I would kill him.

Anyway, I decided at this point that going outside your cave was dangerous, and promptly went home. BUT THEN I woke up, and realized it had all been some stupid dream, and uh... I guess it wasn't a RL Fallout experience at all...
 
I know this is kind of prejudice, but I think that you guys who are playing Fallout 3 don't know exactly what we, people who usually play FO1 and FO2 for years, feel. You've been playing this game for something like 10 days, and already are having hallucinations?
 
Uh, who the hell are you to say what I have or have not played? If you even read what I wrote, you would realize it was a blend of more than just the third Fallout. I have played both the first two fallout's since they came out, repeatedly. I own the third one, have played through it once, and hate it.


But you know, whatever :P
 
Even if someone didn't play the other two Fallouts, does it really mean that they can't hallucinate this one?

I actually think its just the opposite. If I play a game for 10 days straight, hours on end, I think I would have more hallucinations then playing a game that I play on occasion every few years.
 
I dont think I've ever confused bottle caps for currency, but I do hear the music of Fallout 1-2 frequently in my mind.

The music of the Raiders(The Den) and Vault City are burned in my memory.
 
Sorry, didn't had read everything you wrote, stop right when I saw you was talking about FO3. (well, to be honest, I didn't read it now too, but I saw the word Shady Sands, thats enough to me), so, well, I think that there is nothing wrong with you having hallucinations.

But I still believe that if you had just played Fallout 3 (even if you are playing for 10 days without eating, sleeping and answering mother nature calls), this is not enough to have real hallucinations. Well, I mean, if you REALLY played for 10 days straight, so you'll have lots of hallucinations, but I think you got what I mean :)
 
Wow. You didn't read everything I wrote, and you dare criticize me about not knowing how it feels to have played Fallout 1 and 2? You know, the two games with the, uh, ton of reading that you have to do to get through them? Huh.

I generally steal quotes from games and add them to my book of phrases in my head. One time, my mom told me in a very serious voice that we needed to talk.
"Time is money, chitchat is not money Mom, geez" Was how I responded.
 
Sometimes something happens and I get very lazy and hate reading anything. Usually, this "thing" doesn't happen when I think "Hey, I'm going to play Fallout".

And well, I just read big texts when I'm sure they're worth reading (not saying your text wasn't worth, but I don't know you, so, I couldn't say if what you say is worth reading or not)

And hell man, just forget it, I mistaken you by some Fallout Newbie who just had played Fallout 3. I was wrong, I took an early conclusion just by reading the beginning of your post, and now I do believe that you've played FO1 and FO2 as much as anyone else here did :)
