The first one was crap. Rockstar's gameplay has never been particularly "fun" to me but at least it was varied. In RDR it is mostly minigames which are then replaced by just shooting shit. Horses that are annoying as shit to manage the "run" meter with as when you tap it too much then it throws you off of it and if you steer just 'slightly' off the edge of the path then it slows down to a crawl. Since it is a western setting where enemies most of the time are relatively far away it means that most weapons were useless and playing on a console with a controller meant that the sniper was just godawful to use.
And then we have the story... Mexico was redundant and adding another dude from your gang you had to hunt down when the first one hadn't been taken down yet was redundant. Marston kept going ON AND ON about how "HELP ME OR I SWEAR I WILL FUCK YOU UP!" but he kept agreeing to everybody's bidding like a little bitch.
And the final part of the game was probably the most anticlimactic ending I've ever seen. It wasn't interesting at all to me. It just lingered on needlessly just so that they could pull their blatantly telegraphed "twist".
And the sandbox crap... You should only design a game to be sandbox if there is a point to it. And what point is there in RDR? Scenery? Fuck off. Picking flowers? Ugh... Random encounters? Yeah it is tons of fun to see the same encounter over and over again cause repetitiveness is the new black. Strongholds? Barely any around and I don't recall a whole lot of point to them anyway. It is just a whole lot of emptyness. And don't get me wrong, a western setting with cowboys and shit 'should' have a whole lot of nothing in between sights of interest cause that'd be realistic. But there are times when realism kills the enjoyment and this is one of those times for me.
This is one of those games I don't understand why people love it. It is repetitive and shittily written.
But then again, it brought us Undead Nightmare, which was a blast to play. Rockstar's gameplay worked far better when you throw in monsters and shit and the story didn't take itself seriously and was meant to simply be b-film grade fun. And the sandbox world worked when it was a fight for survival.
So RDR 2? Fuck that. I'm only interested in an Undead Nightmare 2.
