Just a discussion thread for RDR 2. Anyone else played the first one? I thought it was pretty good.

There you go. See, it looks nice and uniform now instead of shitpost-y

Anyway I played and enjoyed the first one ages ago, haven't played it in forever though since I'm mainly on PC now and like the geniuses they are they never ported it. This new game better get a PC port (and a good one too). Hopefully it's better than GTAV after the hype and inevitably disappointment of that release.

Yeah I liked Redemption, wasn't a big fan of the zombie DLC/gimmick whatever. Had it on Xbox though, shame there's no PC port.

The first one was crap. Rockstar's gameplay has never been particularly "fun" to me but at least it was varied. In RDR it is mostly minigames which are then replaced by just shooting shit. Horses that are annoying as shit to manage the "run" meter with as when you tap it too much then it throws you off of it and if you steer just 'slightly' off the edge of the path then it slows down to a crawl. Since it is a western setting where enemies most of the time are relatively far away it means that most weapons were useless and playing on a console with a controller meant that the sniper was just godawful to use.

And then we have the story... Mexico was redundant and adding another dude from your gang you had to hunt down when the first one hadn't been taken down yet was redundant. Marston kept going ON AND ON about how "HELP ME OR I SWEAR I WILL FUCK YOU UP!" but he kept agreeing to everybody's bidding like a little bitch.

And the final part of the game was probably the most anticlimactic ending I've ever seen. It wasn't interesting at all to me. It just lingered on needlessly just so that they could pull their blatantly telegraphed "twist".

And the sandbox crap... You should only design a game to be sandbox if there is a point to it. And what point is there in RDR? Scenery? Fuck off. Picking flowers? Ugh... Random encounters? Yeah it is tons of fun to see the same encounter over and over again cause repetitiveness is the new black. Strongholds? Barely any around and I don't recall a whole lot of point to them anyway. It is just a whole lot of emptyness. And don't get me wrong, a western setting with cowboys and shit 'should' have a whole lot of nothing in between sights of interest cause that'd be realistic. But there are times when realism kills the enjoyment and this is one of those times for me.

This is one of those games I don't understand why people love it. It is repetitive and shittily written.

But then again, it brought us Undead Nightmare, which was a blast to play. Rockstar's gameplay worked far better when you throw in monsters and shit and the story didn't take itself seriously and was meant to simply be b-film grade fun. And the sandbox world worked when it was a fight for survival.

So RDR 2? Fuck that. I'm only interested in an Undead Nightmare 2.

I played it once in a store, the last guy left it in a chase or something.
My mother was like "Wow, that looks realistic"
In oozing smugness I rode to a wall. "Oh nvm"

Nailed it. There really does need to be a reason for this to be an open world this time around. The biggest sin of Undead Nightmare is they didn't do a damn thing with the mansion in Tumbleweed.

They should just make the bandit gangs and shit dynamic, so that you never know what you might find out there, along with 'faaaar' more variety in random encounters. Could be big bounty bandits that are occasionally sighted by people and carry unique modified weapons or something like that and when you hear about these sightings you have to actually get out there and find them. Maybe limit bullets and first aid and shit this time around and allow the player to set up stashes that they can get to to resupply.

But most importantly, structure the main missions so that the player is allowed to take whatever approach they want to from whatever direction they want to. That's something I hate in sandbox games, when I have to be escorted by an NPC. (It is far worse when the NPC is too fast to just walk alongside with but too slow to run with.)

I liked the first one(probably the only good cowboy/western game besides maybe new Vegas). Rockstar has a pretty solid track record so I might check this out.

Oh and remove the Dead Eye cheat-mode. Cause, yknow, can we please have a semblance of difficulty this time around?

I guess that's the unique thing about RDR, a western super-hero game. Quite unique.

The first one was crap
Which one, Red Dead Revolver on the PS2? Yes, the gameplay was kinda lackluster.
Or the very-very first one - Gun.Smoke? I mean, this arcade game was second echelon crap even when it was new.

Since this one is Red Dead Redemption 2 I obviously mean RDR 1 was crap. Haven't played the other ones.

That's not going to happen. Most Western games have some semblance of this mechanic.

There's more dead reds than meets the eye. And with this one, as you saw, numerics doesn't mean shit.

snippity snip

I have to agree, Rockstar is at their best when they're more laid back and not trying to make something super serious. In my mind the only time they've tried to make a serious story and it actually worked was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Now that game knows how to make you feel betrayed, kicked in the gut, laugh your ass off, and heartwarmed all at the same time.

I mean just look at Grand Theft Auto V. The game tries to be a mixture of humorous and serious but the serious parts are honestly just boring. It's like they gave Trevor all the crazy humorous stuff they're known for and relegated Michael and Franklin all the more serious moments. As a result, Trevor is really the only character in the game I can relate to. Franklin is basically a poorly done CJ clone and Michael never really hits that sweet spot for me, he just comes off as an irredeemable asshole despite the fact they tried to garner sympathy for him with us. I just never felt any of the characters tug on my heartstrings except for Trevor, Trevor is actually very compelling because they allow him to have actual funny moments instead of making it humor + serious time.

I'll also agree Undead Nightmare was the best part of Red Dead Redemption. First of all when you consider how it uses almost the entire RDR map, it's probably one of the biggest zombie games out there. Second of all it's actually very entertaining and kept within its own little world, and I adore it. And because it's more short and less drawn out than the main game when it comes to plot, I feel the characters are allowed to breathe more and given more life since there isn't as much to take in. Almost makes me wish I still had an Xbox.

Hell yeah! I saw this the other day and can't wait for the trailer! I love westerns! Its a shame that there isn't much western games out there. Its a really underused
Oh and something off topic and stupid, apparently the idiots at Neogaf, Twitter and Tumblr are throwing a shit fit because the teaser pic has a lack of vaginas and people of color. How bored are these people?
