Restoring the cathedral

So... I was thinking about something new... old. We all know the cathedral in Fallout 1 (at least I hope so). It was always bugging me a bit, that you could only see very little from the roof. So, I thought about maybe it is possible to recreate the missing by using original art and a new 3d model and some painting skills... but I don't think that I am good enough, heh.

Anyway... I started to paint a small draft with a approximate rebuild cathedral. On my image the first thing I see is that the roof is wrong.

(I started months ago with creating the missing left side of the roof. In Fallout 1 you can not just scroll from left to right- there are scrollblockers. I made the roof longer to the left, so that this becomes possible) Also maybe the hole thing needs to be a bit higher... but this would make it really really huge. More huge than it already is. Basically it wouldn't even fit in one Fallout map. I've planed to use this for FOnline- my target is to merge the interior with the outdoor map so that players can move from the outside to the inside without map change. It is just a tiny detail but hell, it would be worth it.

So... now I am thinking about if I should try it and fail horribly or if I start begging for continuum. (Hey! The FOnline Engine is not the crappy old outdated Engine from Interplay! We can use all colors, we can even use bigger sized tiles, etc. And if something doesn't work, we post a request and with the next update it is in. :P)

Ok, to get back to the topic. The question now is, how many different images are available of the cathedral? At the moment, I can only think of these two:

The first image shows to 80% (I am not really sure) a old version of the cathedral. Maybe the version from the image we got from Gary. You see the difference if you look at the second image. First, there is the nuclear sign and above a kind of ventilation. On the first image you can see that there is no ventilation and the nuclear sign is far above.

Ahhh!! :) ...I had forgotten how awesome the design of the cathedral was... :)

Go for the second image, not only does it look better but it will give you more space above for any other details you may want to add.

I think, I will start today with building some blocks to get the basic form. Hardest part will be to merge it with the original art... but I think, if the base is done, test rest can be done too.

Sounds good. Too bad this particular feature is not available for a normal game (I'm not interested in any multiplayer project/game/whatever).

With the engine it would be possible to make singleplayer games too. :P But it wouldn't be easier than creating a normal mod for Fallout... At least, here is everything possible.

Wow, that's an impressive work you are beginning!
i can see how the basis could be done by simple copy pasting, but the rest will have to be entirely created.
I wish you luck, something like this would definitly look well in Fonline!

And have you discussed these matters with Cvet? AFAIR, he stated that engine is MP-orineted and source code is closed. Security reasons and such.

Source Code is closed as long as development goes on. Also a lot stuff is already "outsourced" and done by server scripts.

What should I discuss with cvet? I don't want to make a singleplayer game out of it, I just said that it would be possible to do so.

Man, what a monumental work with fucking outdated crappy engine. Heh.

/Edit: Some more details:

Lexx?
If I can give you my opinion ;)
Don't waste your time to try to well past your new cathedrale with the old one.
Make directly with your actual proportion the whole cathedral using the actual style but made by you.
I think at the end it will be easier.
You 'll be able to cut without a lot of try directly your wall and scenery.
Understand what I mean?
The bottom of the cathedral isn't the hardest to make, you have the model ;)

I don't think that this will be easier. Especially because I suck very much in creating new textures.

The most of the cathedral is already done. I am only adding details right now and then I will add basic textures. If this is done, I will merge everything with the existing graphics- this will be the most easiest thing for me, I think.

I will post a new screen in a few hours.

Ok lexx, no problem.
I 've a lot of respect for you.
I was just saying that I tought that we win some time
making an entier new level in 3D for the cathedrale.
I've work like "cathedrale builder" , by packet.
And if you want, we can work together and I give you
the generic stone and decoration, and you 'll be free
to make the new cathedrale you want.
It's as you want.
If you want to put together all the pieces doinging our cathedrale and texture them, I 'll send you the .3DS

Wow, how did you managed it to build this _that_ fast? I am already working the whole day on all the other stuff... As far as I can see, you've made nearly a 1:1 copy out of it. How the fuck?

On the roof you can see what I mean with "I suck at creating textures".

Nice,nice,nice !
The render you see take me 4hours.
It's my work.
I'm 3D modeler in industry.
For automotive. (and soon unemployement...fucking crisis...).
But I'm weak in texturing (for the moment ;) thanks conti ;) )
But When you know how to model, you can model everything.
Your render is nice.
If you want we can imagine together a new cathedrale, with "gargouille" and all this kind of sstuff making a cathedrale?
My idea is to start from the part over the wall to make us free to imagine what we want.
We keep the actual wall and freely made what we want for up level.
A question...
How do you imagine to manage the big up part of the cathedrale?
Because, actually it's walls, but I don't now if we can create tall wall?
I encounter some troubles with big scenery.
It looks like if we were limited by the size of the scenery?
If not, we can imagine to create a exit grid to the inner of the cathedrale and transform the rest of it in tiles or scenery.
?

No, this is _all_ roof tiles. No scenery, no walls, only tiles. Also I am doing this for FOnline and not for Fallout because of tile size limit in original game. In FOnline I can do what I want from graphical point of view, so big images are no problem. I can merge inside and outside of the cathedral in one map and can make the map even bigger. I have 100% free hand with a lot stuff.

I want to restore the original cathedral, so I am always looking at the images of the cathedral I posted above. This is my first target- to get it done as good and original as possible. Mostly I am doing this with a lot copy&paste and "painting over" but I needed a 3d model for the base.

We could try to work together but I have to say, I don't know how we could split the work.

well, If you want I propose you the following thing.
I make the different part of the cathedrale.
Say me what you imagine, what you want to see on it.
You texture them and put them as you want, where
you want.
I think you can do it.
Just like "Dresdner Frauenkirche".
If the challenge interest you, just MP me.
We will discuss of how we 'll do this new one, between a french and a german, 55 years after. (Or a German and a french as you want brother ;) )
:D
look how I build it.

As you can see, there are only 4 differents parts, copy and past.
If we manage to texture it well, i think at the end we can win a lot of time and make something very nice, and new.
