Revival of Arena Shooters?

Recently, this month, I saw some a video of a called Reflex, and once I saw movement physics of the game, I became very hype. And last night, I saw a trailer of another game that I think will bring back the FPS Arena Shooter genre that has been abandoned for years (Halo being one of the only FPS Arena Shooters around from 2001-2007. Reach and 4 were terrible Halo games because they lost what made the first three games great).

Ah, I cant be the only one who has awesome memories about the Unreal games and Quake 3, which was also called Arena, hehe.

God I hope Arena Shooters make a come back.

Easily superior to 2tacticool4u brown modern shooters and the ever tiresome Second World War shooters.

As much hate as it gets, I always thought Halo was a fantastic Arena Shooter in both Singleplayer and Multiplayer.

Halo:Reach and 4 definitely soiled the series's legacy.

Though, interestingly, Halo 5 seems to be slowly bouncing back from the loadout based cheese fest that was Halo:Reach and Halo 4:Modern Duty and returning to the Arena style, they've put a big emphasis on everyone starting the same and these super powers look quite fun to use, and if they get the balancing right it could turn out to be pretty great.

My favorite video game memory of all time was in quake 3.

Was playing on the ps2 with a friend. We had it on sniper rifles only and a space level, so it was wide open with only platforms, first to ten kills. We were both at 9 kills, super intense sniper action, hiding, only popping our heads up for a second. The last moment we both jumped up at the same time and double killed each other. 10 to 10 tie.

Probably only interesting to me, but it's one of the few really fond gaming memories I have, I still think about it. I miss the days of console multiplayer, Golden eye and mario cart and the like.

edit: that toxikk game looks awesome.

Go play Quake Live if you get a chance. Not too bad really.

Damn dude, played a lot fps when I was a kid, but my kill death ration is like 1/50 -- and that's when the other guy gets bored and uses the nailgun or whatever. Would like to think everyone is cheating but pretty sure I just freaking suck. Kind of depressing.

I agree. I even argued with someone that wanted Reach in the MCC.

Tis the curse of the jack-of-all-trades gamer. You enjoy playing so many games, you never spend enough time on one to ever measure up to that game's elite. Having watched (and to a lesser degree, experienced) what the best of the best do in some of the games I've played, I get it now. It's freaking effort. It's Shaolin Monk level dedication to a specific game to the point that these players KNOW exactly what's happening. They know by the frame, by the pixel, by the whatever, exactly how they and their opponents are playing, and there's no competing with that if you're not one of them.

It's a helluva thing.

I notice myself bitching about lag (which is something I used to make fun of people for), even though I have pretty fast internet 3989249347.png -- and I'm pretty sure I played FPSers on a 56k (somehow) when I was a kid.

Definitely frustrating though when for example in Quake I can play practice mode and it feels so good to have that instant reaction to when you're shooting someone, and online it's like cool, I just hit you with ten rockets but you're still alive == don't know why we don't all have google fiber yet or something. I'm just old, getting slow and crotchety.

I have fond memories of playing Unreal and Unreal Tournament, especially the latter one. I probably drove my girlfriend and neighbours mad when the pc was constantly saying things like 'Double kill!' or 'Godlike!' or 'Killing spree!'. That game rocked.

I drove her made with Age of Empires 2 as well. The sheep bleating and the Vikings going 'Fiskimathr!' and 'Namamathr!' all the time. She went nuts within the hour.

Good times.
