Scariest game

What game/part of a game do you think is the scariest?

Right now I'm playing the Ocean House part in Vampire: Bloodlines, it's pretty creepy, even though I've played ot before. Also the last 20 minutes or so of F.E.A.R were pretty frightening.

Definately Aliens Vs. Predator should be on the list... playing as a marine, in pitch black with a motion sensor thats got blips all over it, you cant see them but their getting closer. Then you see them and their all over the wall jumping at you.

100% agree, i would say its best to move ur comp in to ur bath room, and sit on the pan, than way when u crap youself, which u will do, it wont be in your pants.

id also say resident evil, but thats more jumpy than scary i think.

Oceanhouse, Alistair Grout's mansion and sewers in VtM: Bloodlines gave me some of the best scares in years. Before that, the game which scared me most was the first game in the only horror series I ever played - Alone in the Dark.

The Silent hill games are definitely in my top 10. Those blips on the radar in AvP kind of remind me of Space Hulk, that's on the list too. In fact, pretty much any game that takes place in a dark place or a forest is.

And how could one forget the Call of Cthulhu on the Xbox?

Also, specify from now on if it was jumpy scary or disturbing scary (i.e Resident evil or Silent Hill).

I'll back you up there. The face huggers are probably the only thing that's ever made me jump out of my seat before.

Bloodlines and TD:S had some really creepy atmospherics that just make your skin crawl.

I didn't find F.E.A.R. scary at all, but it wasn't a bad little game. Too bad it looks like shit on all but the strongest computers.

The scariest game for me would be... well I guess AvP.

Doom3 was also scary for the first few levels.

Oh, yeah, the Zombie mod for UT2004 called Killing Floor was fucking scary.

Thief: Deadly Shadows, Orphenage mission.

Ditto. Shalebridge Cradle was perhaps my most creepy gaming experience (Oceanhouse pales in comparison). The audio is superb, the atmosphere laden with emotion. The effects, like the flickering lights, are very well carried out. It all adds up extremely well.

Per, don't you find it a bit suspicious that even though the entire family committed suicide, the boy decapitated himself? It sort of gives the ending away, though it wasn't a huge surprise to start with. Besides, the portrait was just silly. I thought the toilet overflowing with blood was rather humorous as well.

Same here. Really freaked me out. Especially the enemies, actually, their whole body jerking thing a la Jacob's Ladder.

System Shock 2 is hands down the scariest game I've ever played. No cheap scares either, like Doom's 'monster suddenly appears behind you' gameplay. If you haven't played it you MUST get a copy immediately - it easily makes my top ten best games ever made list.

Thief (gold version) is pretty scary as well; I liked the Cradle, but I think the original has levels that beat it in horror value.

I'm slowly going through Silent Hill 2 and while it's not scary in the sense that SS2 or Thief are it has the best creepy, Lovecraftian horror atmosphere of any game I've ever played.

Eternal Darkness is another good Lovecraftian horror game. I didn't find scary really, but it's well worth playing.

Undying I still haven't gotten around to even though I've had a copy of it lying around for about a year now. Heard nothing but good things about it though.

Then I'll come saying bad things:

-extremly boring gameplay in the old first person shooter style (get the key to open the chest where you find another key that will open the door)
-there are only a few scary scenes and those are in the first levels of the game. After that the game is a regular shooter. Oh yeah, and it gets boring to be "scared" by the same dog-like creatures again and again... and anyway, they disappear too towards the end.
-the level design is bad, the voice acting is bad, the graphics are bad.

When resident evil first came out my friend Pat and I stayed up all night shaking in our jammys. I think that's probably number one for me, but I'm glad someone said System Shock 2, because that game was terrifiying. The sound design was so goddamn good; Shodan's voice just made me want to break down and cry - but at the same time it was strangely erotic/seductive.

System Shock 2
VTM:B
Silent Hill
Thief: Deadly Shadows

Pretty much the same memories as you guys. System Shock 2 was just brilliant, and brough out true emotion in me, of fear, anger, disoriantation and hopelessnes, no other game has done so to that effect. I still have nightmares about those fucking cyborg midwifes, with their clanking hooves...

Silent Hill was terrifying when i was younger. I liked the actual lack of enemies, and anticipation of what was actually their. The lack of something is a lot more scary then a large amount of it (which is why doom 3 sucked).

VTM:B was a very good game in general, but one of it's strongest points was the idea of pure horror in a densely packed urban enviroment. I must admit that after my first play through of ocean house, i now just NoClip it. Grout's mansion was great story wise, and for the psychological element. Even though nothing their was a challenge physically, i still found it really hard to make progress with those gibbering leather clad psychos running about.

Thief 3 was just great for atmospheric horror. I wont get into the most obvious cradle section, but i would prefer to mention the segment of boarding that infested boat, and then the overlook mansion. Overlook was just great. Faded memories and dipression of a lunatic, yearning for her husband. The whole house was atmospheric, seeming to be in mourning.
