Gentlemen, meet Fawkes. One, if not only, friendly Super Mutant in Fallout 3.

He is considered a "failure" in the experiment (he was deemed a failure because he could talk, supposedly) and was left inside a cell for observation at the Vault Labs in Vault 87.

You see, the labs at Vault 87 were assigned to a project called the "Evolutionary Experimentation Program", Or EEP for short.

Consider Vault 87 much like the military base at Mariposa. It was used to test modified strains of the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) on clean, healthy citizens. Vault Dwellers.

However, they could never get their modified strain just right.

After all the modifications that were made to it, the modified FEV was superior in physical adaptions, but tended to decrease intelligence (instead of increase, which never was the case anyways with super mutants) and caused the subjects to exhibit bouts of rage and anxiety.

And that, my friends, is why the Super Mutants in capital D.C. cannot be talked to, except Fawkes. You can have him as your buddy! Comes included with a Gatling Laser.

Oh, and remember Harold? That Ghoul-Mutant?

Well, Harold is in Fallout 3.

And Boy has he changed. A lot.

Harold eventually found himself overwhelmed by Bob, and became rooted to the ground during his travels in the Washington DC region. Here he was discovered by several people who began to worship him as a god, and a small and exclusive cult called the "Treeminders" began to form in secrecy. Bob began to blossom and many plants grew in this area, which became green with life, a stark contrast to the outer wasteland.

Here's a HIGH QUALITY voice sample of Harold directly from Fallout 3.

For ****'s sake -.-;... Seriously?

If FO had an asshole of 1", Bethesda has gaped it a circumference of 20"! Everyone is welcome to just keep raping it!

I ... I .... I am actually stunned beyond words, appalled to such a degree I thought wasn't possible.

[spoiler:acf14a4ea3]They just didn't fucking rip off Fallout 1 and 2 elements, they pretty much copied them piece for piece but on a smaller scale!

As for Harold .... the less words, the better[/spoiler:acf14a4ea3]

You've got to be kidding me.
I actually want to doubt its credibility but then I realize it's bethesda, the guys with Todd Howard and axes as blunt weapons, and it all makes sense.
Jebus...

[spoiler:d05cbcb333]Oh my god just look at Harold, THE TREE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A JOKE YOU ASSHOLES!!!![/spoiler:d05cbcb333]
 sob

Hoooollllyyyyyyy shit. How is it possible to be let down any more about this game?!? How? HOW? Bethsoft did it. Somehow, they managed to make me want the game less- as if they just dropped a metaphorical singularity right into the spot in my brain that says "Hey, give it a chance, what harm can it do?" Really, Bethsoft? A *second* FEV called something else? Really? TWO super-soldier experiments at the same time? Wow. Just.... HOW?!?!? Who the hell green-lighted these ideas? Ugh.

wow. really? I'm... sad. This whole Bethesda story must be a nightmare. How is it possible not to understand the spirit of Fallout? oh wait... they were too busy making Fallout 3 to play Fallout 1 & 2 :

So, this game goes further and further down the hill. And then I hoped I was sceptical.

What has been seen...
...can not be unseen.

I realy shocked.
[spoiler:5868c073bc]Harold. My gods... What happened!?[/spoiler:5868c073bc]
I hate bethesda.

Well it was aparently either that or [spoiler:c58553505a]becaome a genetic enginering project for the "Goddes" Dianna so she can make "Magic Fruit" out of bob as bob and Harold live their sout in the "Nursery" (Fallout VB)[/spoiler:c58553505a]

Well at least in the second case Harold's presence fills more of a purpose.

[spoiler:024487e060]And he isn't turned into a tree[/spoiler:024487e060]

I had NOTHING to do with this!

And Egad, this is awfull. Terrible. Shameless. Tasteless.

What in the world is he doing in bloody Washington DC in the first place? Bloody absurd. Doesn't make any kind of sense, story-wise...

I chuckled...

Didn't he mention that it took him forever to get to Gecko... How the hell would he have made it all the way to DC? Ugh.

Well, since Bethesda's ret-conned the ghouls to be able to run.... I suppose Harold actually ran to DC. Which still doesn't make much sense, considering that FO3 is supposed to take place about 30 years after FO2.

I doubt any ghoul would be able to make it across the continent that quickly- not with the state of societies being as they were, and the attitudes of so many "smooth-skins" toward ghouls being so negative (ranging from self-absorbed pity of the ghouls to outright hostility) it seems sort of unlikely that they'd even bother. Less of a reason for them to head east than the Brotherhood, that's for sure.

Why even should they leave Necropolis or Gecko. I really want to hear Bethesdas story about this...

Well, Harold was originally from Vault 29, and it wasn't as far from California as Washington, DC is. And he was tied better to the main plot - he turned out to be the key to saving humanity from the New Plague. And he actually had a purpose in going there - searching for a cure for his illness (and he had vague memories of Diana from his youth).

BTW, I don't think there is much point in putting Van Buren info in spoiler tags, given that the game will never be released.
