Stalker: Call of Pripyat

Flop

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
I'm a little surprised that this hasn't been discussed yet. According to gamespot, it was released on february 2., although I didn't notice until it was released on steam yesterday, with a 10 euro discount If you have either Soc or Clear Sky registered to your account.

I bought it immediately, but I haven't had much time to play yet. I've only skimmed a couple of reviews, which gave the impression that the game is an improvement over the previous ones.

Is anyone else here playing this game, and if so, what do you think of it?

I WILL be playing it as soon as a get through Clear Sky, which I just started. From what I saw, CS is an improvement over SoC, so CoP is bound to be as well. I hope they did a better job with the localization for you guys this time around, the English version of SoC was horrendous.

I didn't have any real problems with SoC, to be honest, but then I only recently played it, using the latest patch.

I never actually got very far into Clear Sky, although I guess I'll try it again when I have time. I'll be playing CoP first, though.

Im still playing SHOC with Wolfehunter's mega mod. Never got clear sky.

That said, getting CoP will be a lot of fun in Aus -_-

^ It's only "recommended" if you have a good machine to run the game. It's also mostly cosmetic, too. If you're like me, sitting on a machine that can only run the game on low-medium settings, don't bother.

Best mod for SoC is Oblivion Lost, or AMK if you prefer "realism". What most of mods for SoC do, though, is to turn it into CS >___<

I'm actually kind of intrigued by the story in CoP, since we're sort of getting to play the "other side" of the story - you know, an agent sent by the military and all.

SoC was fine on the technical side, but the translation, man, the TRANSLATION. And the horrendous English-language VA; they should've just left all of the original VA in. I'm never getting an English-language STALKER game again.

it's an incredible improvement over the first two games. it's a lot like Clear Sky minus the bugs and the broken faction wars. the reworked AI is very good, and all mutants are way more deadly. and i played start to finish without a single crash!

the quests actually have a reason and story behind them and can be completed in different ways, so no more fetching quests. as far as i know, the way you complete these quests will affect the ending slideshows.

one thing i was REALLY disappointed over is the lack of X-labs. SoC had like 3-4, CoP just has one.

it almost felt like i was playing a bit of Fallout in a STALKER game.

Anyone with vista 64bit have trouble getting it running? I clicked yes to install the latest direct x, but it didn't so I had to install it manually off the disc, then it doesn't create any short cuts or menu entries just an entry in vista's games section. Which doesn't point to anything, you have to edit it to point to the game. No hardship, but just doesn't create a good first impression.

So far not impressed with the character interaction, talking to several characters and they don't turn to look at me, seems a step backwards from ShoC. But finally a hot key for anti-rads yay!

Oh yeah if you are in the UK, Tesco's were selling the special edition, £5 cheaper than GAME.

I just bought it because of the SoC ownership promo, and it's pretty good. I've only played like 10 minutes though, but it feels more finished than SoC.

I tried to get through CS about a year ago, but never really got into it. Too much action I think.

One thing I noticed about this one though, is how absolutely horrendous the graphics are. They look far worse than CS, which is weird, and are barely better if not worse than SoC. But then again, I'm still at the boat.

I wish I had seen that graphics mod when I played the first game. Any plans on making such a mod for CoP? Also, if I want to replay Stalker with it, is it compatible with Oblivion lost?

I get the feeling that if I played the original, I've played them all.

I liked SoC but not enough to play it again.

I really wanted to pick up the collector's edition for this, but not a single store in my area sells the game. Not even the regular version.

I'm the kinda guy that wants a tangible copy, so I'm not really interested in a digital download, even if I'd get a discount for owning the previous games.

I guess I'll order it from a site sooner or later! People who have played it seem to have nothing but good things to say about it. In a strange way, for me, this is one of those franchises whos flaws are actually a part of its charm. Can't explain it because I haven't figured it out.

Question for those who have played -- how is the English version in terms of dialogue? I found I enjoyed the Russian voices far more immersive in the Zone than English dialogue with a Russian accent. So much that on my play through Clear Sky, I immediately patched it up with a Russian dialogue mod before beginning.

^ If you understand Russian (or German), get one of those two versions; English dialogue is bound to be subpar. It's not BAD, but you just said it - it's more "immersive" in Russian. I'm personally playing them all with the Ukrainian patch, for full "immersion feel".

I recall some of the Stalkers saying the occasional Russian/Ukrainian/whatever phrase and most of them spoke English.

Oh also:

One thing I noticed about this one though, is how absolutely horrendous the graphics are.

I noticed that too. Can't call it "horrendous" but certainly looks more edgy. However, I'm running it under DX9 with static lighting, so I don't really have the right to complain; what about you?

Any plans on making such a mod for CoP?

I heard they're making a CS Complete ATM. CoP only recently came out, I'm sure they'll get to it eventually, but hard to say how soon. Also, isn't CoP using a different engine?

As for compatibility, I have no idea.

Too much action I think.

WTF? It's a shooter, for fuck's sake. What did you expect, a promenade in the Zone, enjoying its natural beaty, long fireside chats with psi-dogs and maybe a romance with a Controller? It's not a story-driven JRPG/adventure game, man.

Also, what the OL mod you mentioned does to SoC is to basically turn it into CS, added "action" and all.

Static lighting means the game uses DX8 only. DX9 begins with dynamic ones.

I just bought it on steam (20 euros), downloading as I type. Cannot freaking wait, I need some shooter distraction from Dragon Age : ).

Oh. Ohwell. Regardless, I think the game looks better with HQ textures and static lighting than with mid-Q textures and dynamic lighting. Anything beyond this makes the games frustratingly laggy on my laptop.

I'm running full on DX10 with everything to max (the graphics options are pretty limited, any way to tweak them further), still looks like shit. The draw distance sucks, and textures are extremely blocky. The graphics look like they're from 2004, especially outside.

Stop being black and white. When I said "too much action" I obviously meant compared to its predecessor, which had pretty much the right balance. Don't be an idiot.

I quite like the game but i have to say.... textures (especially some weapons textures) look really bad at times. You get used to it though.
