The Broken [Insert Whatever] Woes Thread !

So, my PC kicked the bucket today. Testing and verifying with more capable third parties and my own conclusions all came to answer that it was my power supply that broke/died/whatever, so while the problem itself was identified, it was still major enough to incapacitate my system. It was a real bummer, and I was in the midst of building a new system, and ALL my data was still on that system, all disparate and disorganized but ready to be sorted through once I had the time. Actually, I had plenty of opportunities... I simply never acted on them.

It was a real kick to the nuts, but as many nut kicks are often useful for, it's a galvanizing event that will spur me on to complete my new build and cease any further procrastination. I COULD buy another power supply (or temporarily swap out the broken one with the new power supply purchased for my new build?) so I can get my system up and running temporarily just so I can sort everything and back up what I need before I finalize my new system. But my plans are as of yet not set in stone. It just petered out a few hours ago, after all. Haven't even BEGUN the funeral arrangements, figuratively speaking.

Typing on a laptop sure is a bitch. It's bad enough when I need to get a new keyboard and I have to get accustomed to it, but now I MUST acclimate to this scrunched and squeezed series of flat keys while I make my move from one system to another. >_<

So, share your miseries? What past or current major hardware events have happened / are happening to you that would feel good to reminisce about? Did a phone break that was the linchpin to your life that threw you for a loop? Did a fax machine back in the 80s/90s start smoking that fucked over your business? Did a graphics card in your 486 PC partially break and did you make due playing video games without the color red on your monitor for several months? Did you fall into a swimming pool and your whatever electronic device that you were holding or had on your person get submerged?

Whatever the tale and whatever it did to inconvenience you, share it! We've all been there, in some form or another...

I had a power supply go out very abruptly once. I was actually playing FONV. I happened to have the side cover off my pc at the time. It popped and flashed like a firecracker. (Appropriate note for July 4th)

You need to stick another power supply in right away to make sure there was no other damage and it will still boot up. I was lucky with mine.

Unfortunately, right away is something I cannot do. Although I THINK a power supply was one of the parts I've already acquired for my new build, so I MAY be able to swap them out, but ideally I'd rather keep things for the new system FOR the new system, instead of popping them in and out. =/

Well, I wanted to have the dead system intact when all was said and done, rather than cannibalize it for parts, but I guess that won't be an option anymore. T_T

Also, while not as major of an issue as, say, your motherboard dying, the major drawback (to me) with the power supply being the case is that that's a LOT of rewiring to get done with a new part. It's not like swapping out a new card or removing one fan. That's dozens of wires and plugs to make sure you do not miss, and taking it to a place like Fry's and forking over $100 JUST to see that it's working is pretty shitty.

Then again, what other choices really are there? It DID kick the bucket. Gotta pay the piper.....

Switch to (hideously overpriced) water cooling. Failing that, crank up the AC while you're running.

Sometimes AC isn't an option... I remember back in about 2007 or so my rig at the time (a shitty pre-made store build) was overheating constantly during the summer, and I was resorting to taking small plastic ziploc bags (fuck this keyboard) of ice from my refrigerator and taping them to the side of my tower. It helped, even though I had to replace it every hour or less.

Eventually I got the heat sink adjusted and had new lubricant applied between the CPU and the heat sink, but that while of putting up with my system overheating JUST because of the summer weather was really hell.....
