The Positive Thread

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Now, I've noticed alot of people are deeply concerned about the fate of Fallout 3. While I certainly understand your concern, I do not feel we need to entirely abandon hope. So, instead of simply posting a "get positive you Beth haters" thread that would get me flamed out of existence, I thought I'd create a thread where we could post and discuss everything that looks GOOD about Fallout 3, or discuss the positives of controversial decision on game design.

NOTE: The point of the thread isn't to make you like Fallout 3 or Bethesda, simply to look at what good might come out of the game and maybe be a bit more optimistic. T

Alright, I'll go first. While the level of retro-future design in the game may or may not be enough, I do personally beleive the game looks good graphically. And while you can whine all you want about jaggies or anti-aliasing, for a game over a year away from release, it looks good.

Also, while VATS certainly doesn't sound RPG, I am glad the body part targeting is back. Plus, it looks like it could have a really have an interesting affect on combat. Hobbled actions, limping characters, dropped weapons, plus the ants going Batshit after getting shot in the antennae is a cool touch.

Alright, you guys go. If there is anything positive coming out of the preveiws, what do YOU think it is?

EDIT [Response]: This thread is designed for people to talk about what they have seen of the preveiws for F3 that they like. If you take issue with something someone posts, feel free to post in response as long as the conversation is meaningfully forwarded.

Nope. You can discuss whatever you like, but there will be no "positive only" threads.

Because we have already vatted "post what you hate" threads and unfocused wish lists in favour of topical arguments? But all right, I'll restore it.

From what we have heard, this game might be a dumb-down Fallout game for the mass market - console.

I don't have much high hope left for this 'sequel'

Meh, let's just see if it goes anywhere. You're probably right, but we'll see if it becomes a useful thread®

one thing i didn't like about fallout 1 and 2 was the roof of nearly every building was that flat brown texture with the odd hole here and there.

Fallout 3 will recreate a world where you can explore the ruins of large buildings

graphically I think the environment will look good, if not entirely in the same vein as the retro 50s look the originals had.

but good graphics doesn't make a good game...

Hello,

I guess one of the few 'positives' would the same reason as that of the4thlaw.

But in general I hate Bethesda's Fallout 3 and I hope it fails.

I like Fallout 3 because it shows how pathetic Bethesda and gaming press is. Also, it allows to separate true Fallout fans from posers.

What I like... uh, okay... At first, character creation seemed interesting... But there probably won't be an option to skip the tutorial, hearing Liam all the time is not my favorite thing and on top of that this whole "You're SPECIAL LOL" book...
Meh.

So this leaves only 1 positive thing about FO3- Ron Perlman. He never fails. I wonder how does he feel about this new Fablivion.

it allows to separate true Fallout fans from posers.
You know nothing. Ask that guy at TES forums who says that Fallout isn't emulating p&p rpgs. And he doesn't care what the FO devs said about it. It just doesn't. Whole Fallout community stands corrected.

I read in one of the newsposts that you can do it character sheet style or with the tutorial style one.

I don't go to Bethsoft forums any more. Not after I learned from them that I'm "utterly obsessed with wanting murder children in F3".

I bet that came from a person that finds corpse eating as cool idea ^^

There's an option to completely change your character sheet, but only at the end of the tutorial. Which is exactly what they did in Morrowind and Oblivion as well.
God, I hope they change that.

Didn't Oblivion look better before release? And weren't its NPCs more intelligent before release?

This is a fair example of why this thread annoys me. Targeting is back? When were we ever cool with it being away? The fact that the game still has limping characters is supposed to win us over? It's as we should view every step away from Oblivion-style design towards Fallout-style design as a concession - "Look, we have all these things that carry over from the old games (in some manner cough) - surely all that positive outweighs the changes? It's only fair." This is a persuasive definition of "positive", just "what are you glad they didn't screw up?" as opposed to "how are they actually evolving and defining, not devolving and streamlining, CRPGs?"

God, I hope they change that.

It's Temple of Trials anew.

I think that it sounds like a fun enough idea, but I would get bored with it very quickly if I made as many different characters as I have for the previous two.

In fact, this thread should actually be about what changes when compared to the original games are for the better.

I can only think of one real thing, and that's the character creation. Of course, there should be an option to skip it on re-plays.

I suppose that graphical quality is another positive, but from the screenshots so far it lacks the Fallout atmopshere.

It all has a Resident Evil quality that isn't bad, but certainly isn't what I expect from Fallout.

I like the idea of a less buggy game, of a game where much more can be added in; greater depth to NPCs, more dialog, more missions, etc. The simple fact that it's going to take up more disc space is a positive, in a sense.

Hey I like the corpse eating :(
It seems hilarious to me.

In any case, the things I so far like about fallout 3 are their attempts, however shoddy, to keep some aspects of the older game.

I don't mind an evolution of the game in terms of view, as I don't personally care about table top "perspective" gaming (my p&p RP experience never used miniatures, and I always imagined playing from my characters view), but if they can't handle it with taste then I will be very disappointed. On one hand, the idea of a third installment to the first two games actually seems iffy to me no matter who does it, as I see them as 2 halves of a whole, and if they tried to add directly onto that story, it would disrupt everything, making me happy they chose the east coast setting, it won't interfere with the art piece that is the first two. On the other hand, despite my reservations, I long to revisit post apocalyptic California and watch the evolution of the area.

I suppose their way gives them new grounds for a fresh start though, giving them freedom of story as long as they don't fuck with canon too much (tiny tiny changes won't hurt my feelings) and provide explanations for everything.
