Throwing, the most hated weapon skill?

Grimhound

Still Mildly Glowing
I have noticed there is a serious lack of love for the Throwing skill. I'm not exactly sure why, though. I mean, it is hardly the worst. I fact, in a rush game, I've found that stockpiling plasma grenades makes it so you have very effective crowd control. It's also the one weapon type where you really don't need much skill to use them. You chuck a grenade, it just needs to hit /near/ a target. Am I wrong for thinking this way?

I like playing with grenades myself. I think they're mostly ignored because with the exception of EMP grenades vs. robots they become obsolete quickly. Rocks, throwing knives, and spears don't do the damage of a lowly pipe rifle. In the case of spears in the early game before you find a gun, you're effectively throwing your weapon away for an insignificant amount of damage. There's also the issue that throwing weapons are far heavier than ammunition.

If there were a few more powerful grenade types the skill would probably rise in popularity a bit.

It is indeed a skill that usually nobody picks or increases. I can agree with the former, however, I usually increase this skill to about 50-75% for some of my characters. The one I use it on the most is a melee weapon / big guns / throwing specialist. Basically your typical brute.

But..

I disagree that all weapon skills should be equal. There are more or less popular weapon types on the battlefield. It is your personal choice what you want your character to do. There is no equality in the real world and there should be none in the game world. Throwing something is just usually more tactical than devastating. This is why I often play with an "explosives specialist" when duelling with my friend in Fallout: Tactics where it helps to force the opposite team to abandon their position.

This is just my personal opinion, other people may think otherwise.

Throwing is a good skill in FO:T since you can throw grenades without having to aim for an enemy. It's less useful in FO1&2.

I'm running with a melee/throwing character in FO2 with killap's awsome restoration project now.

It used to be just Melee, but I found out that with higher weapon skills comes higher chance of locational crits.

So what I do is I carry around a crapload of light throwing items like those plant spikes you can get from those plant enemies, and use them to cripple runners.

The spikes don't do any damage, usually, but their crits still cause locational crippling, so if some jerkwad tries to run, huck a spike at their legs, and next turn you're all up in their grill. Also works well in use of blinding guys with guns so they have almost no way to hit you.

But still, throwing skill works poorly for dealing damage, without using grenades, so using it as a primary weapon skill won't work that well.

If you want a strong throwing weapon, Plasma Grenades do 40-90 damage and cut through armor. Strongest weapon in the game.

I don't like grenades. Their best applications are a tad situational (Grouped up enemies), and their supply is limited enough that I don't want to waste them.

Also I'm using throwing as an augmentation to Melee fighting (ie the prevention of runners (offense), and the nullification of gunners (defense)).

Though relying on grenades as your primary method of combat might work in the later stages of the game, but I can't see it working on its own for long enough for you to reach those stages.

Also...

This was just a method I'm using to deal crippling effects with a free, light, replenishable source of ammo. Sure it doesn't deal damage, but I'm not using it for that purpose.

And...

The only time when you can have a surplus of plasma grenades is when you venture near SF and wait for hubologists encounters. That is, sadly, too late in the game and by that time there are better weapons around (even melee ones).

Another thing which makes an early thrower not a good option is picking up thrown weapons. Sometimes they just end up in places from where you can't pick them up anymore (like a body falling over them or behind some object).

Now that I think about it, the place where I usually end up using grenades is Vault 15. Raiders there have plenty and there are quite a few enemies in closed quarters. Usually works better than my 10mm SMG / Hunting Rifle that I carry around at that stage.

To sum throwing up. (or better yet - to sum up throwing ;) )...

The reason why it's not worth it is because of the combat system.

1. Throwing a spear deals similar damage to poking somebody with it.
2. After throwing it, you have to retrieve it.
3. If you don't have 10-12 spears for every opponent you face, you will have to pick up thrown weapons mid-combat.

The only situation in which this would be a good skill to have is a realistic combat system where every attack is potentially lethal. Any of you heard of Neuroshima (pen & paper postnuclear rpg system)? There, you have no hp's, just minor, normal and major wounds applied to different parts of your body. With something like this, throwing would work in Fallout. Without it.. let's just keep on poking them till they die.

I don't know if it would be possible to create, but I'd love to see flash grenades that actually stun and make an opponent miss a turn and/or blind them. A couple more grenade types would make throwing a useful skill again. I also think frag grenades should do a lot more damage. Even molotov cocktails would turn exceptionally handy if they actually did fire damage since very few critters have fire resistance. Unfortunately, I tried to edit the damage type and the cocktails stopped exploding. Bummer.

As it stands, I keep a couple of grenades around for those times I get surrounded. If you can withstand the damage to yourself, a grenade right at your own feet will send the bad guys flying - and this rocks with large mantis packs.

The bad with FO grenades is that they deal ridiculous damage. By example, the molotov can´t even kill a klamath citizen! I ALWAYS mod my FO to the grenades deal *5 or *10 damage.

Shocked, shocked I am! I never do that! ::whistles innocently::

Hello! Everyone who likes Throwing should check out the mod in my signature.

Have you ever made a "throwing" character?

I'm playing one now, a hot chicky with throwing knives. I've done ok so far by having the One Handed trait and skilling up as fast as I can so I can nail people in the eyes, but I foresee lots of issues once people start wearing more than leather. Also my companions do a lot of the killing, unlike my small/heavy/energy/unarmed/melee games where I do almost all of it.

Have any of you made a throwing character? Did you complete the game?

I never did, but that is due to the low amount of throwing weapons in the game, especially late game. But I suppose with enuf grenades anything is possible.

I've been playing an unarmed/throwing character. Grenades make a nice addition for dealing with groups of enemies, and don't interfere with HtH Evade, but they don't do enough damage to be practical as a primary weapon later in the game. Being able to throw pulse grenades accurately is useful, particularly for looting the Toxic Caves early on.

Magnus' Weapons Redone mod improves the range and damage of thrown weapons, among other things, which makes the skill much more useful.

I'll tag Throwing with Unarmed because aside from Speech what the heck else do you really need? 60% Lockpick, 40% Barter, blah. Skill points are pretty irrelevant by double digits level so why not? [FO1]

Throwing is also pretty important if you feel like knocking over Morpheus and the Cathedral at level one. You can stair-trick with Morpheus but you'll want plasma grenades for the mutants by the nuke computer.

Fallout 2 Thrower?

Fallout 2 Thrower

Im thinking of making a thrower based Fallout 2 character. I mean maxing the throwing skill possibly and using only throwing weapons, will i be able to beat the game on normal or maybe hard?

Any experiences, are they fun/boring? Any opinions?

sure as hell won't be easy.

you'll have difficulty finding enough spears/knives to get started properly, you'll have to stock up on a fuckton of explosives later and it will probably mean you'll need to focus on less violent solutions to problems.

that in itself can of course mean that it's a fun challenge. i'd say give it a try, no one can tell YOU if YOU would like it or not.

Well, you can end up with 1 sharpened spear (provided you have enough perception) and two regular spears (one you start with, another within the temple), and 8 sharp sticks by the time you exit Aroyo. Then, at the hub (?) . . . first trading center, you'll find about 4 throwing knifes in a bookcase near the south-eastern edge of the map.

Did me well. Just make sure you come out with a ridiculously high strengh, agility, perception, likely taking the "gifted" trait, combined with the one that allows you to throw things for one AP less! Or does that only work for guns? *Sigh*

Throwing provides awesome shots, though . . . Takes so little skill points to be making 90% hits, where, with a pipe rifle, at the same skill point, would only be hitten 50-65%.

Well did you finish the game? and with what difficulty and was it hard to do it?

I thought about taking very high agility and perception an ok Strenght. and other what i can after that.
