Torment for the first time

Tiny Tim

Still Mildly Glowing
Completely new to torment. Should i really grab beamdog's or torrent the original?
Also, anything else i should know before i play?

I did not have the chance to play the enhanced edition yet, so I couldn't tell, but apparently, Chris Avellone participated in the various fixes, so it's always a good sign. Also, as much as I loved Torment, I was too used to Baldur's Gate and Fallout Interface, so the resolution (very close to the characters) always seemed a bit off for me. Seems that the enhanced edition lets you set a more playable resolution, so that's good.

The game is focused on dialogue, so don't think too much about combat optimization and game mechanics (you'll be able to reset your stats during the game if you change of class, so mainly focus on wisdom for the beginning) and just let your instincts guide your character. Try to build a team to do the handy work for you, but don't expect companions to pop up on your road. Finding them is up to you.
Get tattooed ASAP and save often, on different save spots.

As for the rest, brace yourself for something unique. I'll avoid spoilers and stay a bit vague, so bear with me if I sound a bit evasive :)
Death is merely an inconvenience and you can use your own character death mechanics to your advantage. Every named character has a story to tell, but watch out, some quests are not to be taken. This is not the classic RPG where all quests lead to profits. You will fail some things, and that's okay, the world and the story goes on. But still, remember that you leave trails.

Hold on to keys.

Keep hope. Have as much empathy as possible. Allow yourself some rest at Inns, some of the most interesting situations and people will come to you when you are resting, taking a break from quests. It pays off to be honest with most NPCs, and don't get scared if you have to mutilate yourself sometimes. Your body doesn't matter. Your name doesn't matter. Only learning and knowing matters.

I'm going to pick up the enhanced edition shortly, but I've played the old one numerous times.
I'd suggest you pick up the enhanced edition if you start from nothing.

If you play it, try not to have any preconceived notions about how RPGs should be.
If you get into it with the mindset of "I'm the hero, so I'll attack the first group of thugs which I meet to get xp and better weapons", you'll quickly wind up at the morgue again. :)

The "Enhanced Edition" of Torment is consists of the mods you can add yourself in the original game with the addition of item highlighting and better pathfinding(don't know how much better it is since I don't ever plan to give my money to Beamdog) with a $20 price tag slapped on top. The original was $10 before it was taken off and replaced with this shit. In my opinion I don't think the extra $10 is worth the purchase.

When you die and reborn or whatever what happens to companions that die?
If they die before the final dungeon, there are several high-level priests in the game that can cast Resurrection(Though it is super-expensive)

Alternatively, if Falls-From-Grace is maxed out, and learns new spells from certain scrolls she can cast it
However
When you reach the final boss, you find out the companions you've taken along are dead. IF you choose to fight him, you can bring one and only one back from the dead(If you merge with him, or trick him in to thinking the shadows have escaped, all are raised from the dead)

It is assumed that in the last dungeon, your companions are permadead if you didn't actively raise them.

If you talk to Deionarra at the beginning of the game in the Mortuary you can get the "raise dead" special ability that allows you to raise a companion if they happen to die. As for the ending, if you merge with TTO you end up resurrecting and sending all the companions you brought with you back to Sigil.
