Total War: Good strategy game?

Before you get the wrong impression I absolutely love the Total War series, finding them a fun way to pass the time. However since getting them after some strong suggestions, I have always wondered that is the series really a good strategy game? Now I'm not arguing if it's a good game or not (I strongly believe it is) but I've always been let down slightly by the simplistic method of strategy and simple army rules, that make winning against the AI really easy even on the hardest difficulty. Has anyone else felt that the strategy and tactics were too easy or simple?

Most of the time you'll be just charging into the enemy en masse, even if you make detailed and careful formations thanks to the AI and battle 'rules' the majority of combat will just devolve into simple mass charges, which takes the strategic edge away from the game. It ends up being a matter of who has the biggest or best army, not the smartest or cunning tactics more often then not, which makes plans for small, flexible forces that unless are horse archers stand no chance. Maybe it's just me being bad at strategy (which, sorry for boasting, is unusual) or something singular. Anyone else has this problem?

Probably my favorite strategy series aside from maybe age of empires, there is strategy in that you can't charge cavalry into spearmen, infantry into archers, if your archers get hit by cav they get wiped out ect.

problem is in most of the games the ai rarely does that, if you play online you can end up in some intense battles though, back in like 07/08 i had some really epic battles on medieval total war 2

not sure which ones u've played but if you haven't played all of them i'd rank them

med2 > rome1 > medieval 1 > napoleon > empire > shogun 2 > shogun 1 > rome2/attila, rome 2 and attila being the only ones i didnt really like

Total War games are not really strategy; they're all about military tactics, and tactics has always been about the rather blunt use of military forces and so it normally does become a numbers game. The planning and clever moves more than not comes at the strategical or operational level, which are not fantastically represented in the game. So don't worry!

Well thanks, that does help explain it. Still...

Yeah I don't consider it to be a fantastic game series, fun as it is. There are games that do tactics much more enjoyably (World in Conflict, Company of Heroes), and there are games that shit on it completely from a real operational/strategic level (Civ, EU IV, Wargame) but it's still great fun to watch peasants shit themselves and run when you charge them with horned knights.
