Vista or XP?

XP 64-bit. I don't see DX10 being a strong enough argument for running Vista. Also, I get XP for free through uni.

I'm using Vista 64-bit. DX-10 did seem to bring a slight performance advantage, but I don't know if it's worth it.

My advice - stick to XP as long as you can, 32-bit if possible. Vista has horrible interface.

XP still.

for my uses at home, i don't see any upside to Vista, save for DX10.1. and that just aint enough to make me switch.

You can set the interface to work like XP though, and get all the benefits of newer software. I'd say go Vista. I've had no problems with it at all, and eventually you'll need it over XP.

Vista has no real improvements, but still lots of problems, and the next os is already announced. no use to swichting to vista.

XP, but I used Vista to play Far Cry 2, because the latter actually looks better in DX10. Otherwise, I find Vista useless.

I would stick with 32 bit XP if I were you, unless you absolutely had to have DX10. Drivers are still really crappy under Vista. Case in point; my step-mom just bought a 'new' computer from Dell and it has Vista Premium on it. Her relatively new HP scanner/faxer/printer/mr handy driver doesn't deal well with vista waking up out of sleep, and neither does her motorolla DSL modem hooked up through USB.

I've always heard Vista had shitty driver issues, and the fact that the two non-trivial (mice, keyboard) peripherals she had hooked up to it had bad behavior with vista was another nail in it's coffin for me. Not to mention bloated memory usage, the hit-you-over-the-head with a hammer configuration options that frustrate experienced users etc etc ad infinium/nauseum blahblah hatemicrosoft

fin.

I am running XP Pro x64. There are only a few games with special DX10 modes (and Crysis can be made to look almost as good in DX9 with tweaks). Plus, all the Fallout games run fine on it, as do Infinity Engine games.

I also use XP. Really don't like the memory hogging vista.
Thanks a lot microsoft, for helping me to save money. :D

Well, most new computers come with vista, so unless people like messing with it, they are stuck with what they have.

This new laptop I want is running Vista 64 with 4gb of ram. I am debating it.

Windows 7 is supposed to be released next year, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's delayed until 2010. I've used the Win7 betas quite a bit, and if the final product is like them, I'd say that the future of Windows is looking good. It essentially has all of Vista's benefits (improved audio architecture, DX10, GPU-accelerated interface, some other minor things) with a lower memory footprint and a few new ideas tossed in as well. The new taskbar (I think it's called "Superbar") is kind of neat but shall require some getting used to.

XP's support lifecycle isn't ending until after Windows 7 is released, so it's quite safe to stick with it, and it gets my recommendation.

So you've tried windows 7?
I heard a rumour about putting an end to compatibility issues by some sort of emulation of previous windows versions. Is that correct?
Would be great for all those old games that are near-impossible to run.

Ah, I can't confirm that. I haven't tested everything, mostly just poked around the system to look for differences and compare resource usage, speed, usability, and the like... Now that you've got me curious about that, I may test it again. If I do I'll be sure to try running Fallout 1/2 and some other old games like Daggerfall and Hellbender to give you as much of a definitive answer as I can. :D

XP Home Edition SP2

:D

I'll never upgrade ever again.

Next comp I buy is a goddamn wooden abacus.

Vista 32. I still find the amount of ignorance floating around regarding vista amusing. It's the same thing we heard from all of the moronic 98 users when it came time to switch to XP.

Scrub: Vista sux xp ftw lololshiftoneoneoneeleven

Vista user: Have you even used it?

Scrub: well... no...

I'm probably going to skip on Vista, partially due to what I've heard concerning it's problems, partially because they're going to be releasing Windows 7 soon anyways. I've heard less about the problems from friends as of late though.
