What is statistically the best weapon for each companion?

Uncle Phosgene

First time out of the vault
I tried to do the math myself(both to get Burst and Not-Burst options depending on the circumstance), and I got decently close, but I gave up when I realized I didn't account for their special stats effecting accuracy and crit rate or the crit rate of weapons or the SKILL points for weapon types effecting it. This mucks all the numbers up a bit.

What's the right order to approach this equation, I wanna figure out the damage per turn, accounting for how many shots you get, accuracy, crit rate, other stats if it's melee, SPECIAL, SKILL, all that.

Like, just looking at Ian(who is seemingly the simplest) both what he can actually use and his skills, SMG with Burst seems like the obvious choice, but maybe it's actually the .223 pistol since you can take a couple shots in a turn and that adds up to more? Or maybe it's the Powerfist since his Unarmed Skill is highest and he has better Strength than Perception and it's harder to miss those?

Or Katja. No Small Gun skill and her Big Gun skill is useless since she can't shoot them(oversight?), so Melee or Unarmed seems like the right call, but her Strength is bad, really bad, so Melee would be the better of the two despite the skill I'd guess? Or maybe it goes back to guns despite the horrid skill?

Never, ever, give Ian an SMG. P. sure there are entire hate threads on this board about giving him an SMG.

Also, wrong forum. I don't care and I doubt anyone else does, but you might get better answers on the Fallout forum.

I think 223 pistol do well for Ian. It use big pistol animation so Ian can use that one, I think. And reliability is better than random damage, considering it's Ian we are talking about.

I remember I gave Katjia a Ripper and or Super/Sledge. She give crits often enough it compensate for her low strength.

Maths are probably on a wiki. Ian maths are going to be higher damage with SMG. It's really awesome damage when he stands directly behind you and makes hamburger hill out of your torso. As for Katja, she's a chick so, ya know how that's going to go in a fight...

It has what I need to DO the maths, but not the actual calcs and I don't really know the...order of operations, I guess, for applying it.
Like do I apply base SPECIAL and then tag skill and then the weapon stats, what order, what is the actual effect, then I gotta account for accuracy and shots per turn, then If the answer is a full auto weapon I gotta find the best non-Auto option because if you're early game and have multiple allies that's a death trap while if you only have one ally and it's late game and you have power armor it's worth it

Are you asking us to help you turn into a gameengine inside a human shell?

Cause that sounds like it.

I am interested if you do, though. But I gotta ask first.

Ok, so I think what you want to do is give up, because you also forgot to take the most important thing into account, which is what the enemy is, specifically what the enemy AC, placement, DR and DR is at.
I mean, who cares if you hit with every bullet of a burst from a 5mm SMG when each of them get filtered by the DT and you end up doing 0 damage?
And if you're against a high AC enemy standing super far away at night, it doesn't really matter that they got 0 DT and DR, you're gonna do 0 damage with that same burst because you can't hit anything.

So what's optimal usually depends on the enemy.
You could probably make a decent guess that the optimal late game weapon is a Power Fist for Ian if you assume you're against a deathclaw that's right in your face, but it might suck real hard against a super mutant with a minigun or The Master, who will get fewer bullets missed when you're right in their faces.
