Why do people prefer Fallout 2 over Fallout 1?

I genuinely don't care in terms of "OMG NO THE FIRST ONE IS BEZT" but I'm curious to know why Fallout 2 places ahead of 1 in all the polls and such.

I haven't played it in probably six years or more (gasp!). Granted that's not on purpose, mind you. Fallout 2 was great, I remember a period of a year or two where I played it all the time, beating it many times.

Aaaaaand GO!

For me it's a factor as simple as the possibility to keep playing after the story is done. In FO2 I rarely even take much advantage of it, for obvious reasons: What the hell am I supposed to do? So, I try, I usually keep a completed-game-save, where I am utterly superbadass, and by this time I will have hoarded more stims than I'll ever use, etc.
But still, that little detail is enough to put me off :I

lol nice. Well hey, on the plus side there's mods for Fallout 1 that allow you to keep playing :D

Although F1 was a much stronger story, F2 seems to be a better game (game wise)...although there are a few too many inconsistencies - towns (New Reno - great place to run around, but seems unrealistic) - and weapons (too many, too much firepower, etc). F1 is a struggle to survive, while F2 is just a great adventure...

While the first Fallout had its moments, the second game is what I keep closer to heart. Sure, all fun and games to blow up a military base and a cathedral. But the second game was more exciting somehow.

Well, mainly, FO1 was just a little too short.

Better in terms of game balance, character building & such, though.

I guess because Fallout 2 offers more possibilities to take up position than Fallout 1 does. Sure you can offer help to the "good & evil forces" of the wasteland, but at the end you're still just a loner looking for that damn water chip. In Fallout 2 though the main quest fades into the background, while allying becomes more important. It's just a big playground. I like Fallout 2 for it's integration of politics. It's exciting to see the prospering NCR, high-tech Vault City and the trading of gold and uranium. Still I prefer Fallout 1 because everything fits perfectly in the post-apocalyptic world.

Fallout 2 is a bigger experience, plain and simple. Fallout, however, had a more consistent world; it provided the player with an exciting, intriguing storyline (attacking a stronghold full of super-soldiers or searching for a magic-wand item that saves primitive villages? Hell yes I'd take the first one up any day!).

That said, there's lots of fun to be had with the sequel. I like its lighter tone, complex quests, the feeling that something is not right (remember your first Enclave encounter at the Gecko NPP?); and the sheer amount of stuff you can do - from losing your ear in a boxing match to selling your wife as a slave... It's unfortunate that modern RPGs take themselves too seriously yet are ridiculously bad.

I'm a perfectionist and I hate the idea of a small time limit. At least in Fallout 2 I have about 13 years.

I actually don't know which one I would prefer. I guess Fallout 1 because its more exciting (and not insanely hard at the beginning like its successor, I remember the first time I played FO2 I couldn't even kill a goddamn gecko).

I don't know I guess I just enjoyed Fallout 2 more because there are more things to do and also you have a freaking car! xD

Story wise Fallout 1 wins hands down BUT as others have said Fallout 2 simply has a greater, wider world. It's MASSIVE with so much to do.

You are literally drawn into an epic adventure on a massive level.

Your first play-through of Fallout 2 would last could last 50+ hours (easily.)

It's one of the biggest games ever i've played.

However with its huge scale came alot of inconsistencies and unwanted humour (some humour is ok but Fallout 2 is jusr one massive easter egg hunt...)

In my opinion Fallout 1 is the better game for plot and setting but Fallout 2 is the better gameplay experiences.

Yeah but you guys have to remember the good things about Fallout 1. Fallout 2 didn't completely blow Fallout 1 away in terms of a good adventure.

Don't you guys remember things like, searching the glow, Mariposa, or even the little things like fighting that deathclaw for the very first time.

God I miss the days when I was on my first Fallout play-through. I was a Fallout virgin, it was the 90's and the game was spectacular in graphics, game play, and everything else. It was basically a world to where anything could happen. I didn't have all the knowledge I do today.

I remember my first time moving through the Necropolis sewers, how I thought it was freaky (at the time). My first time seeing a Super Mutant. My very first time searching the glow (and how long it took me to figure out how to use the damned rope on that iron bar thing). Rescuing dog meat. Filling shitty when Ian got blown up by a hand grenade on a caravan run. Shitting my pants after seeing/talking to the Master for the very first time.

Ahhh, those were the good days.

Playing after the end of the game is such an overrated thing. Like, what's even the point? I beat the quests, get my ending that shows I fucked up something, so I just go and negate it by completing the quests I didn't do. That's different to just reloading before the last mission because......?

Because the game actually SUPPORTED continuous play? Maybe JUST playing after the final cutscenes and credits is hardly much more different than reloading prior to the no-turning-back point. But FOLLOWING that point the player was gifted with all sorts of things that could potentially make further play cathartically rewarding. Maxed stats and skills and level for the lulz, why not? See what difference it makes to be JUST the 3-5 higher levels after completing the game, why not? Free exp (and nothing else) to see how your Chosen One could end up, practically speaking, had you played until reaching 99, why not? They each offered different, enjoyable alternatives to JUST playing some more, but the option itself is still remarkable.

Even if it was just another 15 minutes of giggles before putting it down for good and just starting a new character, I personally loved being able to FINALLY take out Navarro after beating the game. It was such an insurmountable challenge up until that point, that waltzing in and Beast Moding that nightmare was a delight! Okay, we now know that canonically that didn't happen, but so what? That's irrelevant: it's fun.

Yeah, back then playing after you "beat the game" was a revolutionary idea. I hear there was a lot of discussion at Black Isle whether it should have been allowed or not.

And all of that, completely useless because you already beat the game, you get maxed stats for just fucking around for 5 minutes then there is actually nothing there to really do that even makes after end gameplay even a point of note. You would just simply start out a new character.

Fallout 1 has the superior atmosphere, non-bloated gameworld/quests and isn't filled to the brim with "LOL!" stuff everywhere. I don't see how it's so hard to understand someone might prefer 1 over 2.
