Why would the Institute ever need main protagonist for 'phase 3'?

Все умрут, а я волномут
Aka fetch quest 'retrieve Beryllium Agitator' also known as "Mass Fusion", main quest for the Institute. They clearly explored Boston with the help of synths and clearly know what's inside Mass Fusion building.

The synths can do this job just fine since they are immune to radiation. (qualification needed)
Kellog can do just fine since he's an Institute asset doing such tasks for years. Isn't the energy and resource problems bites their asses more painful than some rogue scientist sitting in a cave near radioactive crater where synths can invade just fine? (qualification needed)

I still have got no clue why they have got any issues with energy at all.

They can afford hundreds of synths, tons of supermutants, teleportation beckons and basically everything else.

It makes just as much sense as brotherhood of steel, who are just as dumb.

Edit

Why couldn't they send synths or a courser that can do that makes no sense. Heck, even mr handy would do the trick.

Because bethesda wanted you to be a part of the game, or some shit like that.

I mean, I get it, we're Father's....Father, but he clearly has the capable people able to do what's needed.

These thing falls into the games' conventions. These aren't supposed to be used so frequently but the game just will be more boring without it. Or shit like that.

I actually wanna listen to someone who defends this game and this script but don't have a reddit account. That should be interesting.

Trust me, you do not want to go in there.

In any case, since in Farcryout 4 all the robots can and will become sentient, how about this:

Institute creates a mr.handy that becomes self aware and will do everything for them. They decide to send him with a password immune to radiation and then problem is fixed.

Second issue if those guys could create human synths for ages why couldn't they send one in to retrieve it without suspicion.

Or even send a horde baricade the place and do it through trial and error. But no, they are too dumb for that.

Mr.Handy might not return from the mission because of Gunners...
Actually, if Mass Fusion is invaded by Gunners (which is happening before we get Instittute/BOS quest), exactly one Courser is needed to clear path. Greentech Genetics proves this. If coursers actually afraid of radiation, than a pack of Rad-X+Radaway or antiradiation suit can be used. Is there any obstacles on the Institute's way?

Because: Bethesda has the worst writers in the entire gaming industry. I would feel more confident if the developers of Call of Duty were in charge of the Fallout franchise after seeing what Bethesda did with Fallout 4.

One thing that bugs me about this quest, is that the Institute has been around for 177 years(They were founded in 2110)

So, they've been around for nearly 2 centuries, and have been doing science for all that time, yet still rely on a PRE-WAR piece of technology to give them fuel. You'd think they'd have thought of more sophisticated ways to get power by now.

Like, you'd think doing non-stop research for huge periods of time, would make your technology slightly more advanced than pre-war.

Hell, the Shi were able to perfect Seeweed Biofuel in that amount of time, because y'know they realized that they might actually want to perfect a new fuel source, for the sake of sufficiency.

How can an organisation made solely of scientists that perfected Artificial Intelligence, be somehow more behind, then a couple of researchers with a shoddy computer?

I agree.

Because if the player doesn't do it themselves then they can't feel like a super rambo badass who is wasteland Jesus.

I actually like the idea of the power, but like everything else it was handled poorly. Beryllium-9 is used as a simple way to kick start the chain reaction in a nuclear device without having to use tech a post-apocalypse society wouldn't have, but Beryllium is tough to come by in a large enough quantity, especially if you're stuck in one area. You also wouldn't want to burn any fuel underground without a way to vent the exhaust, and above ground vents probably isn't something a secret organization would want.

If they had set up Mass Fusion as the main power source for both the institute and most of the commonwealth, they could have made you choose to disable the power to the commonwealth so that the institute could continue expanding. By doing that they could have justified sending you with the idea that such an important decision has to be made by a human (coursers are just tools to the institute), and who better than the potential future leader. They could have also done something with the generator in Fenway, instead of literally nothing.

But since gas(?!) and fusion generators are littered all over the commonwealth, it's just another meaningless fetch quest.
