Windows 10

As I'm sure the majority of you know, Microsoft is offering Windows 10 as a free upgrade. I'm curious, who's gonna bite and who's gonna stay with what they know and why?

That said, I'm going to download it and try it even though the majority of the new features don't really appeal to me. For me it's a question of support. Microsoft plans to phase out support, security and upgrades for Windows 7 (and I presume Vista) in five years. I don't want to be left without a chair when the music stops the way Windows XP users were a few years ago.

My major concern naturally is compatibility with my games, especially the older ones of which I have many. What offsets this if anything, is I'm dying to see what the new Direct X can do.

Yeah, I'm gounna upgrade soon. Thing is, tech wizards and basement dwellers will put up patches within the year, and Steam will be eager to sort out many of the other patches for it on older ports. Worst case scenario? Get a cheap laptop second-hand, or use a W7 emulator.

Im going to upgrade because the new Direct X is going to be insane.

So I tried all the Fallout games.

Fallout 1,2,Tactics(all vanilla gog downloads) and New Vegas all work(as in I loaded a game and played around for a couple of minutes). Fallout 3 didn't but that not new from Windows 8(and 7 I think).

I'm using Windows XP now and I'd love to stay with it, but I'm concerned about the lack of support and the risk of catching something. Still, I'm worried how the older games can have problems on new system.

I'd still be on Win2k if not for a few software apps demanding XP; and I was on XP until a few months ago [Blender team officially abandoned XP ~bastards].
Currently on Win 7; with 3rd party UI fixes to make it usable.

Good grief, no wonder it's free.

At home, I'm going to wait a while and then buy a new comp & put Win 10 on it.
At work, I'll obviously try it sooner (though we won't officially adopt it yet).

Have been using linux for two years now, could never go back to that proprietary spyware called windows.

I've heard pretty bad things about its security and privacy issues. I'm not going to upgrade until it's actually out so I can read what people have to say about it then.

Windows 8 left such a bad taste in my mouth that I'm just not sure it's worth the time anyways.

In this day and age, If you are worried about privacy and security issues "haha", then you should honestly just switch to either OSX or Linux.

Windows will constantly keep you on your toes. The more out of date the version of Windows is, then the more susceptible to security issues it will be. Windows 8 is far ahead of 7 in terms of security, but I still use it due to the GUI and backwards compatibility.

Get a PAID security software suite. I recommend Webroot, which is the best since 2014, and is about $50 USD a year.

Also, stay away from those sites that you KNOW give you issues, yeah?

As well, if you have Windows 8 and are afraid that things are going to get worse by upgrading, then you need to do research. Windows 10 will be going "Retro." Microsoft atleast took time to realize that they jumped the shark with the whole "Mobile Platform Universal OS" idea, and actually did some work for this OS to be usable in the context of PCs. It will still be on mobile devices and the XBOXONE, however they will be running the OS in a mode designed specifically for those devices, which will be able to switch back towards the standard PC OS format.
