First Impression of Fallout 4

Hell, I am already starting to see it happen with Fallout 4 given its low user scores on Metacritic and Amazon.

Unfortunate most of the negative reviews still seems to be about the big download or the fact that the game uses Steam, and not so much about the quality of the game.

I don't know about that. A lot of the negative Metacritic reviews are bashing the game for its poor story, awful dialogue wheel and lack of RPG elements alongside the bugs and glitches. Maybe not all hope is lost.

I think the biggest problem is that al the factions unecessarily just kill each other on every quest path, the Minutemen quest line basically forces you to attack and destroy the Prydwen despite it being full of kids in midair with an artillery barrage. The Railroad are lame as shit, with them not even having any goals other than "Liberating Synths" and they also want to destroy the Prydwen. This leaves us with the Institute who think the Commonwealth is just better off Nuked and the BOS who just kills the lame ass Rail Road and take on the Institute as the only interesting options.

The quest path that involves the least amount of infanticide is the BOS. Sure they kill all the Synths, but they shouldn't even exist in the setting in the first place so yeah....

So everything comes again from the game refusing to have any quest at all with a pacifist route of any kind. Fallout 4 is about shooting everything.

All endings involve a Huge explosion at the end, because Bethesda knows their audience.

Remember how in New Vegas you could negotiate a truce between the NCR and Brotherhood of Steel if you met the right criteria or if you side with Yes Man not go and kill other factions if you didn't want too. It was understandable why Caesar and House would want the other factions dead and gone and they gave their reasons and argument but in Fallout 4 there was really no good reason. They just all hated each other and it didn't really matter who you sided with as the ending is the same regardless of who's side you ended up choosing.

I liked the option of helping them and allying them, hence I decided to join Yes Man after Mr House told me to betray them. At first I was willing, but after infiltrating their base and helping the BOS I took to them and decided to leave them alone.

In the end, it doesn't matter what people think or post all over the internet. The game, I guess, is piece of shit from demanding gamer's perspective, but it still sold like 3-4 times more copies in the first 24 hours than Skyrim. It almost looks like the worse the games are the better they sell. The biggest problem is Bethesda doesn't need to give two fucks about anything: people will hysterically buy anything regardless. And that sucks.
The sad thing is that this is very much true in many case

Another disappointment... Do you guys remember the Saugus Ironworks? The one where Forged have their base? I heard it's a bitch to fight there, with all those flamers and molotovs flying around. So I went there all suited up, clad in power armor and eradicated all hostiles. I destroyed anything that opposed me and finished the quest with saving that stupid farm boy. Good times. Of course I also stripped the place of everything that was not bolted to the floor. I left the place cleared of everything.

Something like an in-game week later I get a minutemen quest to help some settlement. They ask me to go and kill some raiders that pester them... And guess where did they send me... Yup, Saugus Ironworks. First I thought it was just a bug and maybe the quest will complete itself if I just go there, because I cleared the place before. So I fast travel there and am immediately washed in fire from all those molotovs and flamers. Yup. In Fallout 4 you grind so hard, they reuse CLEARED dungeons. What's even funnier, at the end of a dungeon there was a "Forged leader" waiting for me. In a suit of power armor. At least he wasn't wielding a shishkebab, as that would be too much. Oh, and all the loot spawned too. The place was filled with stuff to pick up.

I don't know about you, but to me it's just pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

Yeah I have also had a few quests in which I am sent back to locations that I already cleared out, resetting the location.
I guess it at least provides more raw material and ammunition.

I was surprised too. I did a number of Minutemen and Brotherhood of Steel quests (Eradication and obtaining tech). Far as I can tell, those are repeatable quests you can do over and over for XP and ammo/materials.

It does make some sense considering one of the advertised features was no level cap. I'm guessing that once you finish the game, and explore everywhere, it still gives you something to do for XP.

I've since discovered another one fro the Brotherhood where you procure food from settlements. I imagine that the new enemies don't spawn until you actually accept the quest.

Or at least I hope so.

I doubt it, it's possible but eh... perhaps not.

So about Fallout 4...

It can hardly be considered a RPG at this point. The comparisons to Borderlands are obvious right off the bat as many people have said. The RPG mechanics do not allow for interesting build combinations or good roleplaying. Most perks are simple damage boosts with others simply being requirements to use certain aspects of the game that are practically necessary. Most quests consist of clearing out areas you have cleared dozens of times over. There are a bunch of good quests too but they are outnumbered by the scavenging/kill quests. I'm over 60 hours in, beat the game, now I have nothing to do besides grinding some more locations out to see if there is any substance to them.

I do like how the combat feels. It can be difficult. The AI is still atrocious but it does the job. The loot system is better than Fallout 3 at least, but I feel like it is lacking in that department in many ways. For one the variations of armor and weapons are not as big as people think. They really pushed the settlement and weapons/power armor aspect of the game when there isn't much to it. It controls like ass too.

Nothing has really made me facepalm like Fallout 3 or POS did, so I do think Bethesda did much better this time despite the complete parting of most RPG aspects of the series. Most of the companions are interesting even though you have less control over them now which is baffling. Sure you can tell them to go somewhere and do things but the lack of a simple command wheel is annoying. For a game that made promises of settlement trading with lots of toys to play with it sure doesn't give you much to do. I don't count making lightboxes with power conduits deep or engaging. The primarily focus of the game is to kill, loot, and build shit but the building is so cumbersome and shallow it has nearly lost my interest. I feel compelled to do another play through with a different faction but I have no desire to mess with all of that shit again.

On a PC with DLC it might gain my interest again, but I need to upgrade and all of the DLC needs to come out fully patched. Bethesda made a pretty good looking game despite the typical issues they have, but most locations feel tacked on. What I mean by this is you have locations that have notes and skeletons on the ground with some half ass story of how they died with nothing but loot in the building and more generic mobs. Most locations are like that unless I have somehow missed large portions of the game, but I have most of the map unlocked. Where are the unique settlements with interesting back stories? Aside from Goodneighbor and Diamond City I have found jack shit. They expect us to make our own settlements to populate the game for them. Nonsense.

A lot of the new factions are cool if not a bit underdeveloped. By a bit I mean a lot. The BoS are a whole lot better in this. The Institute is interesting enough for me to warrant another game to side with them and learn more about their grand plan. The main plot is pretty banal with so many homages to the other games it feels like 2 games combined into one; the first game is the typical Master plot from Fallout 1 with the other being the reverse family plot from Fallout 3.

So we have a game that is pretty much a FPS with limited dialog choices (aside from a few situations which I am happy with) with hardly any RPG mechanics to speak of, focus put into other elements of the game which are very poorly done, much like Ubisoft always tossing shit into their games without developing it enough to warrant the feature, overall giving us a fun game to fuck around in, but not any meaningful C&C which is of utmost importance in Fallout and RPG's in general.

At least it's better than Fallout 3. Bethesda not using certain New Vegas features like ammo crafting and hardcore mode is downright bad game design. They really dropped the ball here. The endings fucking suck too. New Vegas is going to be one of those high points in the new series that old Fallout fans are truly fond of. It simply did so many things better. Imagine New Vegas with this game engine/update with a 7 year dev time by Obsidian. Chew on that shit for a while.

So basically what we said before it came out. See what we meant Bethesda fans?

Oh and the crashes and bugs are getting really tiring. The same fucking bugs since Morrowind. Fix the shit you rich bastards.

I still think Skyrim is a boring hiking simulator and this game can go into the pile too. The Minutemen bore me without any good quests so far besides killing ghouls or raiders to help a settlement. The main quest isn't seeming to go anywhere besides finding out about Kellogg's Cornflakes after slaughtering a whole vault of Triggermen.

Companions seem dull so far even though Piper did talk a little about her past once I got her to like me enough. Combat on Survival difficulty is getting easier now that I have Piper taking all the hits, being a pack mule and the fact that I now do 60% more damage with rifles and ignore 20% of enemy armor. Legendary enemies are everywhere I go but they're easy to kill now with the rifleman perks.

Bobbleheads are thrown around everywhere which is funny as well as those silly permanent skill magazines.

I won't drone on as I'll probably bore everyone but that is some of my thoughts on the game so far.

I liked the idea of Covenant, I was actually expecting some huge twist and more quests.... but they have only 1 quest in total....

Covenant are a small town with a fortress-like look with Turrets mounted on the walls. They make you complete a test to being able to get in. They are near the "Fishing Pond". There is only one quest with them.

Hello from Finland everyone! New to this forum, fan of Fallout and Fallout 2, actually playded those games first time few years ago! (Makes me kinda sad, is there more RPG:s like this??)

Check out Arcanum, it's pretty much Fallout reskinned as a medieval/steampunk game. Same gamestyle, skill system, same developers. A bit more complex tho, takes way more for you to actually get it.

Wasteland 2 is also an option, obviously.
The other options would be cRPGS like Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate, etc..
Thank you for your recommendations. I have already spent 150+ hours with Wasteland 2 and nearly same amount with Directors Cut. Amazing game, BUT still lots of bugs. Definetly going to check Arckanum and Planescape: Torment! Fallout 4 was huge dissapointment for me. (Stupid me waiting for good rpg from Bethesada).

Oh it's not boring to hear it's flaws.

And it's few upsides.
