Greatest video game sound tracks

Mega Man 2 is and will always be my favorite game soundtrack.

Some other favorites:

Final Fantasy VII has some awesome music that managed to evoke a lot of emotion.
System Shock 2's music fit the atmosphere of the game perfectly, and while kinda typical of its time still holds up as some of the best game music ever.
Baldur's Gate has one track that stood above the rest and helped make the game so amazing for me.
Morrowind, similar to BG, has that one melody that is just perfect. Too bad they slaughtered it in later iterations.
Mass Effect has some very good music that helped the atmosphere of the game a lot. It gave it a more 80's sci fi vibe that unfortunately was lost in the sequels. Although ME2 had a few great tracks, and ME3's title track is pretty ballz as well.
Divinity: Original Sin's collection of new and old tracks was amazing and a big part of what made me love the game. The huge variation helped it feel like every track was written with a lot of love and dedication, and there was no generic filler music to be found.

I might post some favorite tracks later.

I love almost all video game soundtracks, but probably the 2 most memorable in my mind are these 2 franchises: Legend of Zelda and Chrono Trigger were my childhood. Some of the most memorable off the top of my head:

TP had an absolutely beautiful soundtrack. Where has the time gone?

Mark Morgan did some fantastic work on Fallout 1 and 2, that goes without saying.

Hotline Miami, to me, has one of the best soundtracks ever.

Credit to the OP because this is a great idea for a thread... So for me it's Grand Theft Auto 4 because I'm a GTA 4 fanboy. If I had to pick out two songs that define that game for me, it goes like this.

This one is the trailer theme, it's a perfect song and it plays at the end of the game too.

This is one of my favorite songs in general. I found it while scrolling through the random in-game radio stations one day and had never heard it before, I was blown away at how good it was. It sounds relaxing but it's also kind of tragic and it fits the game really well. In GTA San Andreas they have a different version of this song that's covered by Ice Cube and it's also really good.

Obviously I have to shout-out other franchises, The Legend of Zelda Series, Various Final Fantasy games, Assassin's Creed, Fallout, Half-life, anything by Jeremy Soule, all amazing music. Assassin's Creed 2 in particular has one of the most beautiful soundtracks I've ever heard.

I don't know about greatest, but I love the Super Mario Theme song:

Castlevania Symphony of the Night has some nice songs too:

@aenemic already mentioned Final Fantasy VII:

Golden Axe games:

GUILE THEME:

Yeah I am old... Some of those songs are not even made by actual instruments because consoles back in the day couldn't handle real music... :lmao:

Going for more recent examples of excellence with my mentions. They're not necessarily the greatest tracks but I think they're very good at setting atmosphere.

Some of you might have heard of Undertale. But the soundtrack being good shouldn't come as much of a surprise, I suppose, since developer Toby Fox has traditionally been a creator of music, not games.

This is more of a personal preference since most of the tracks will seem fairly generic to people who listen to a lot of music, but the OST for the Half-Life remake sits pretty high on my list too.

Human Revolution may not have as memorable a soundtrack as the original, but it's still pretty good.

The score for GTA V has also contained enough catchy tracks to be placed alongside my other favourites.

While I can't say much for the games themselves, the classic Battlefield theme is well-known.

Then there's Mass Effect 2's soundtrack, which has some of my particular favourites. The Metal Gear Solid series have been going from strength to strength with their music too, there's a lot of games in that series so I'll just leave you to find them yourselves.

To be honest, most of the ones I was going to mention as my personal favourites has already been mentioned above.

The hitman games had some pretty great music. I'd link a video if not for two things: I'm on mobile im super lazy and I'm idk also I can't even count properly because that's four things.

(Sorry got carried away)

I still find myself humming the theme from Titan Quest, even though it's been several years since I last played it.

I always found the main Ultima Online theme to be haunting. It's a shame they never really did a full orchestral rendition of it.

Civ 5 had a lot of good music, but this one's one of my absolute favourites.

And although it's been said to death, Undertale also has a great soundtrack.
