"Fallout: Van Buren" Fan Remake

MutatedPanda

It Wandered In From the Wastes
I'm not sure if anybody else has posted about this, but after doing a little bit of digging, I found out that a group of fans are actually recreating Interplay's cancelled Fallout game (or at least staying somewhat true to the original vision).
It looks pretty legit; a lot of the elements in the game are created by fans and then put through a voting process to see what makes the cut. If you can, I'd recommend supporting this project in whatever you can.

They recently posted here and asked for people to vote for some armor design:

And later they posted the results of the voting:

I really hate to sound like a jerk but this has "Cease and Desist" written all over it to me. I've seen more than my fair share of fan works like this get shot down by the copyright holders. And that's assuming it doesn't fall apart beforehand.

I don't understand why if they're not trying to profit.

Bethesda's generally cool about these types of things and even if it gets hit with legalities, they could always change all the names and then publish it.

Bethesda might not care but...
...Bethesda do not own the Van Buren name, inXile does and if what the rumours around say is true they might make a game called Van Buren soon, I believe that they would not be happy if there was a indie group naming their free project the same copyrighted name of a inXile's game.

Just something to consider after Bethesda's "Scrolls" in name legal incident and Obsidian's "Wasteland" in name legal incident too.

Yeah, Inxile own the Van Buren name but Bethesda owns the Van Buren design documents. Either way I doubt they'd take down this little non-profit mod, a mod that I'm sure they've been aware of for a while.

Hi, as some of you know I'm part of the team making this project.

The legal aspect you're referring to has been looked into and we can use our current name Van Buren: A Fallout RPG Adventure, but that was until inXile copyrighted Van Buren, we have a thread about the project on both Beth and inXile forums. We have posted on the inXile forums since they copyrighted VB and they have never contacted us with regard to a C&D, if they do we will change the name and hopefully be able to continue on making the game. We've been around for quite a while and it's safe to assume both Beth & inXile are aware of us and what we are doing. So far it appears everyone is content to leave the project alone, which is great for us.

The core people involved are determined to complete the project although it is taking a long time, unfortunately it is hard to get other people to commit to such a large project and work for free like we ourselves do.

So in the meantime progress is slow but we are still going forward and eventually we will reach our goal :)

If you would like to help out or know someone who does let us know, we currently need Mappers to complete the remaining locations using FOnline Mapper and this is our main delay at the moment, we need people to help us map the game out and get it finished as soon as we can.

Thanks,

LT_J

Wasn't @hexer going to pass it all to Unity?
Hi Wardened, yes Hexer has been talking about using Unity, while I'm in two minds about this switch in the meantime we're still using FOnline but it's definitely something our supporters should have a say in, that's just my opinion.

" In 2003, the game was canceled and the Black Isle employees were laid off. At that time the engine was about 95% done. You could create characters, use skills, perform both ranged and melee combat, save/load games and travel across maps. A tutorial level was done that would let the designers do all of the above. All areas but one had been designed. About 75% of the dialogue was done and at least 50% of the maps. BIS already had many of the character models and monster models. "

Why did it ultimately get canceled then if it was so close to release ? This could of saved the company at the time ?

Sorry to come a bit late about this topic, but if you plan to migrate to Unity, I could contribute a bit. Specially, I have implemented an isometric like camera system.
you can see a little demo in this video:
