What are the parts of history you find most interesting and why.
I'd say WW2, because of the espionage that went on. I have a book about it, called the Secret Agents pocket manual. It details about training and technique of allied operatives behind enemy lines during WW2 and so on. Other parts are the japanese - american war and Operation Barbarossa and the Eastern Front. WW1 and its causes interest me.

I also enjoyed the Cold War, because it spawned many of my favourite books.
For example: James Bond, Tom Clancy (The Hunt for Red October, Red Storm Rising).
There was some really interesting politics at the time too.

Anything to do with ancient history/warfare I love. I like Romans, Greeks, Gauls you name it. Its probably my biggest obsession.
The Celtic tribes. I am interested in Celtic society and how they waged war and lived.

The WWII era is also my favorite, I find pretty much everything about it to be fascinating. It's also interesting because it basically solidified the territories of all the European nations today. Despite shaming the Germans and plaguing their country with guilt for crimes committed by an authoritarian government, they still make some pretty badass cars.

The politics of the Greek and Roman empires are also quite interesting to study.

And the Crusades, because they're the fucking Crusades
Hell yeah mate, the crusades are awesome. If your into them I can throw an interesting book your way called "secrets of the nights templar" about it. yeah German cars are awesome. Check out the new BMW M5 and the E63 AMG.

Y'know if I wanted to I could probably have this thread derailed by page two.

However, I like ancient Greece and Rome's culture. The move west is interesting to me. Renaissance is cool. Er... I don't actually study history. But those are the periods that caught my eye in class.

Greece and Rome catch a lot of peoples eye. since you are not really super into it or academic about it, you should read the Horrible Histories books. they might be books for younger people, but they are easy going and I think they have your kind of humour. They are actually pretty informative.

I've always liked the 1880s-1930 era, the European Migration Era from 400 AD to 700 AD; and a bit here and there of very early history and prehistory, like 14,000BP to around 5,000BP.

I usually don't have to "bother". It just happens by the way I have conversations... And I think I read some of the horrible history book in the goddamn 7th grade. Can you give me a more serious reccomendation?

Sure, with Romans I can recommend the excellent Roman Warfare by Adrian Goldsworthy, and The Spartans by Paul Cartledge.
Also I forgot to mention Castles and stuff surrounding them. Can recommend the book Castle by Marc Morris.

I like the Medieval Times n' all.

Architecture and Art were probably at an all-time high then. Just look at the beautiful Cathedrals and etc. Scattered about in Europe.

I've seen better art from today. We all have. Head on over to rule34.

Also. That medieval painting there... Best one I've seen from that period. That doesn't change the fact that they couldn't get scale right to save their lives or perspective. Medieval art suck donkey farts.

Lads, just look at some of the stain-glass art the Eastern Orthodox made. The Cathedrals themselves are also a work of art [for both catholic and orthodox]. Music is eh.

The Enlightenment was pretty great: The discovery of classical mechanics, Neo-Classicalism, the beginning of the industrial age, the French Revolution, Friedrich the Great dominating Europe, Britannia ruling the waves, America taking baby steps into becoming a great power, Napoleon dominating Europe and Europeans colonizing Asia, Africa and the Pacific were all parts of the Enlightenment.
Aside from that Greece, Rome and the World Wars were all pretty interesting.

My favorite period was the interbellum period (1918-1939), which involved the Chinese Civil War, Russian Civil War, Spanish Civil War, the Depression and a great many other cool events.

I love reading just about anything about Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and Napoleon. Three very great and important men.

I find the twentieth to nineteenth century interesting periods of history as a lot of changes society wise, political, and economic wise took place during these periods, and a real burst in scientific research and development as well as an increasing understanding of the world and its biosphere.
Indeed the WW2 and Cold War eras are very good decades for study such as how the political and espionage games were played and how the major powers reshaped the world into East vs West.

I do however enjoy learning more about the United States pioneer decades or histories and biographies about famous and infamous individuals.

The ancient empires are also still a good source to make documentaries and articles over, and I am not just talking about the ones around the Mediterranean sea.
For one I would love to hear some more about the civilizations, kingdoms, and empires in Asia as it has never gotten as much attention on the learning channels like Greece, Rome, and Egypt did.
The people there have very different mindsets and ideologies than we in the West have and I would like to learn where that comes from.

BTW, did we not have someone from China here? What happened to him?

I am a nut about the Age of Discovery.
Something about crazy people getting themselves in wooden ships and throw themselves into the unknown just to know what was there interests me. Also about how people would start to communicate and interact with totally different cultures and people with unknown languages.

I honestly wonder that if humans would ever discover faster than light travel like in Star Trek if exploration of space and visits to different star systems would be similar to that.

I find the time between World War I and World War II to be rather interesting, mostly seeing the rise of Hitler.
And while it's not exactly a period of History, I do have a rather morbid fascination of the Modern History of Human Experimentation. It really is a downer when you read the soulless atrocities that people did just to torture people and experiment with drugs (here's looking at you MK Ultra).
