Fallout 3, Could it have been a good game?

It Wandered In From the Wastes
I know I know, the title itself is heresy but lemme explain. Do you guys think that if made by a different developer (ex. Not Bethesda) Fallout 3 would have been a good Fallout game. If it handled the story a little better, didn't use the godawful Gamebruh engine, and tried to be a little more faithful to traditional Fallout games. The story wasn't super bad to be honest, some of the sidequests were interesting, maybe have more karma incidents and more moral dilemmas for the player to solve. Also the ending, the ending should definitely be changed, kinda like broken steel but still better, maybe an option to side with the enclave entirely. Also, a reason for the Enclave to actually exist for christs sake. Maybe open up their backstory a bit. I need backstory bois. Tell me how yall faggots feel.

Yeha i think it could of been yes. I mean I even consider fallout 3 a decent game in alot of respect. I enjoyed playing the game even though I would agree that the enclave and that stuff was pretty silly after playing fallout 1 and NV. However the ideas that fallout 3 introduced only its own were actual pretty decent to be honest. Like I know alot of stuff was used from base material etc like they didn't make it up. However things like the setting, art work and pip boy menu for me we're always pretty cool. Lore wise they didn't really screw too much up say as much as fallout 4 when screwed its self one orginal falouts and 3. And I guess it was quite a hard job to kind of turn fo3 into what is was. It was had quite alot of features escp for last gen with vats and 3rd and 1st person veiws plus they made the right decission to include dialogue boxs no voiced protaganist. Karma system.

Okay maybe the writting was the best and enclave was a shambles. It really didn't butcher the fallout franchise as much as fallout 4 did and plus it lead to new vegas. With no fo3 there would of been no new vegas witch dam would of been a shame.

Even though fallout 3 had new take on 'fallout' per say it didn't really turn round and say fuck you. It did kinda use source material. Although maybe its not 'fallout' as people say and whatever and kinda get that. But playing the game was fun and the atmoshpere was great. Witch was similiar to fallout 1 & 2 witch had great atmoshpere.

It got me into fallout and I can not thank it for that (What chance would I have at finding a semi well know PC game from the 90s?) As I had't played maybe PC games either.

But I dunno I think another studio could of done better too but I guess we where lucky we didn't end of with another bother of steel I guess ........

Yes, it could have been good:

But now talking about a Fallout 3 with the story of Bethesda's Fallout 3, depends. Depends on what direction the developers would take it.
If it was made to be like a proper RPG, choice to join different factions or even going solo, several ways of doing quests, using skill checks better, using SPECIAL better, give proper motivation for the Lone Wanderer wanting to activate a purifier, make the Capital Wasteland make more sense, make it so purifying water would not only be important but necessary for the wasteland to survive (or at least make who controls it became powerful and important in some way), etc. Then it could have been good.
So to sum, a better engine, better ruleset and better use of the characters skills and attributes, better world, better writing, better choices, better characters, better factions, better quests, etc.

Well, the factions are bland and simple, there are very few plot details that don't feel like they were ripped out of the first 2 games and put in a new coat of paint, the location is largely generic and uninteresting, the writing is godawful, lots of plot points have obvious holes, ect.

So, remove all that, and your left with an engine and a few dungeons. So, I'd say no, since only the basic outline is anywhere near being good. The only chance it had of being decent, was if the entirety of the plot was rewritten, but at that point, is it still the Fallout 3 we know and hate?

It's like a Ship of Theyseus. If you take a bad game, remove all the writing and lore, and add in your own version in its place, does it count as the same game?

I know that's why I'm saying it's the same story just maybe it gives a reason for everything that is happening not just, oh your dads ded better go do what he wanted, watter yayayay

It could have been passable. Absolutely. And even by Beth -- they're not incapable, they just have a tubevision, cataract, and are too tightly and densely married to that one single game desing thing they reiterate every 4-5 years, like a gold digging 20-year-old reality TV star "like totally in true love" with that 90-year-old oil billionare. But it would've needed to go further in "being in line with the series proper" than New Vegas (And NV should have gone further too).

I'll say yeah.
In fact, even Bethesda could have done a lot better, that's what upsets me so much about Fallout 4.

I would have liked to have seen Troika release a Fallout game, that would have been pretty fun.

Even in terms of a fully 3D game, I think the guys who made the original Deus Ex could have made a decent Fallout game.

I guess it's better than if someone like EA or Activision had the IP

Even if some settings are much more original than other it isn't setting than make it all. You can screw up despite a good setting and do a masterpiece with mundane and generic setting.

Also fallout 3 would be a better game if it wasn't fallout game, but I guess it's easier to buy someones else work and then rape it into oblivion.

Fallout 3, IMO, wasn't even that BAD of a game, for its time period...Ever since 2000 we've been getting a lot more stinkers, and very very few GOOD games.

But compared to the genius of Fallout 1-2, its atrocious.

It could have been a good game, but it failed...

I don't think it was ever intended as a good game, just something to sell a lot at launch. Seems they lied a lot about what the game would be, accord9ng to oldies of this community.

If they fixed the gameplay, combat, visuals, world design, story, dialogue and lore then yes, it could have been a good game.

Yep.

I think a lot of the issues stems from the engine of the game.

Its just not that good for an FPS...

NV proved you can make a fallout game in the engine, but its gameplay still fell short.

NV with Fallout 4's smoothness, and NV's mechanics/lore/etc would have been fucking perfect, or close to.

Even if Fallout 3's gameplay was top notch, the story kills it for me. I honestly cannot play it now because I don't care about any of the characters, I don't care for what I am doing for the story, I don't like the factions etc.

Oh no doubt.

Compared to 1-2-NV, 3's story lies flat.

In fact, no other game has pissed me off more than fallout 3.

I was seriously considering modding the game to let me kill about 90% of the main characters...

Have there been any mods that have completely overhauled the story? I checked a while back and was shocked to find that no one had.

I guess people just think it's not worth it.

There's no real point in overhauling the story. Fallout 3 adds nothing of note to the series, instead rehashing the same old stuff, but worse.

It would be far easier just to write your own story, then make good writing out of the mundane mess Bethesda made.

I guess my point was, yeah, just to completely remove Bethesda's story and introduce a new one.

For example: After realising that the Enclave on the West Coast have been destroyed, a group of Enclave living in a military vault under the Pentagon decide that they have to take the initiative, so they finally leave the vault and begin taking control of DC, bringing somewhat harsh law and order to the otherwise still quite dangerous place. This all happens around 2245 or thereabouts.

Then in 2277, a group of Brotherhood of Steel from the West Coast have appeared in DC looking for powerful Enclave military technology (in this case I guess Liberty Prime) to help them in their war against the NCR back west. The Enclave, who are essentially benevolent rulers at this stage, having integrated more with the DC population (save for maybe a group of older purists) have left Liberty Prime deactivated somewhere, and hope that no one ever finds out about it, due to how dangerous it could be in the wrong hands, so they start fighting back against the aggressive Brotherhood of Steel.

In the game, you're some guy who's wondered into DC and discovered all this happening. You can help the Enclave, Brotherhood of Steel, maybe a third party. That sort of thing.

Done.
