Persona 5

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
So, I don't know if any of you heard of shin megami tensei, if yes then good. Persona is more or less spinoff of this franchise.

We start out as a preset protagonist and set out to do something important, depending on the game. For example in 4 our goal is to solve the murder mystery, which goes beyond simple investigation.

The combat is turn-based, designed about exploiting enemy weaknesses. We fight shadows, manifestations pf human persona, which take shape of many mythological creatures, heroes, demons and gods.

Easily one of the best jRPGs in recent years. And the character are much deeper than whatever most AAA companies can shit out. I highly recommend giving it a go.

I haven't played a Persona game since some in the Playstation 2 days... I really need to get an old tv so I can play my PS2 again...

3 and 4 are available on ps vita and something, 5 works on ps 3 and 4.

3 and 4 are good games on their own. I put more than 200h into 4, that's how much I enjoyed it. You should give them a go, ps vita versions being extended.

I don't have a Vita or a PS3/4 I am broke as hell.

There is technically ps vita tv, which is a vita hardware and software you connect to tv. I wouldn't mind lending mine to you, but I am afraid the distance is a problem. It's a pity it is sony exclusive.

That sounds cool. I had no idea that existed.

So, I have put more than 8 hours so far and I have decided to post ny impressions here.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, BUY IT!

It is absolutely amazing, they took best stuff of Persona 4 and expanded upon it.

The fights are tough, supplies are scarce, I died more than 3 times already and I want my revenge!

The game is much tougher early on, it is basically Fallout 2 temple level of hard. You can also talk to demons and get them on your side, but it is tricky.

You have little money and no way to grind it, thus making every single item valuable.

If you can, just get it.

One of the best jrpgs in the last 10 or 15 years.

I'm nearing the end of the game and I will say...

It's a game I would heartily recommend. With each of the little flaws I find (limited freedom during story events, limited camera control while peeking around corners etc.), there is two or three positive aspects to the game that counter balances those flaws.

Even Yahtzee gave a rather positive review of the game (a JRPG, mind you) which says a lot for the game's quality:

I've been playing on hard and I am already on November. I don't think I'll be able to Max out even half of the Cooperations, might need a New Game Plus, altho I fully expected that.

Here is a funny moment from my playthrough, I switched out Yusuke out of the Party right before the Madarame Boss Fight and for some reason the game made me fight the Boss Fight with only 3 party members. With a lot of effort got to the part where you splatter him with the black mushrooms but he killed me, I retried a few times, always getting to the same part with 3 party members, I wondered why it was so fucking difficult and why would they make you use 3 party members, so then I reloaded from the Safe Room before the Boss Fight and switched in Yusuke into the party, Bam, 4 party members on the fight now, anihilated Madarame on the first try with that.

So far it is the best Persona game.

So what's your character's name? Do you just put your real name in there? I always feel like the name has to fit with the others so for all SMT and Persona game I always make up a Japanese name for each.

I never put my name on it. I am not as good as protagonist ;). I had no clue how to name him first time, so I just went Ryu Dragnier (Breath of Fire 3) because I had no clue.

Next time I will put the official name, Shujin something. And I agree with you on the best persona game.

There are many improvements to the game such as, talking to the personas, more types of damage, technical combinations, the social links matter a lot etc.

I have so far put like 60 hours into the game and it was great. Unfortunately, I have to put in on hold for the time being. I have got one last exam to do...

Still, definitely worth the money, my family is already getting ready to play it in summer when they have got time. BTW, do you play with japanese or english voices?

I went english for the first time, since Persona 4 golden had a really damn good voice acting. However, I will go for the japanese on my next playthrough.

My character is called Fukkube Kasumata (if you have read 20th Century boys, you'll get it)

I play with english voices, I think that, a few pronunciations aside, the dub is pretty good. I may play with the Japanese voices when I try the Merciless difficulty level later this year.

My favorite Phantom Thief's gotta be Yusuke, he is a pretty funny and interesting character, and having this kind of character with a focus on art is definetly a breath of fresh air.

In general the game has some pretty strong writting and it solves the issue SMT fans might have had with Persona 3 and 4 having kind of overly mundane and casual plots with some of the anti stablishment themes of the series being played down. Also, this game shows the power of good art direction and graphic design, even on my PS3 the game looks better than any other AAA game released recently (except Witcher 3).

I went for the manga version's name, like I did for P3 and P4. Hence the name, Akira Kurusu.

As for language, I went Japanese. Nothing against the English (the bits I heard were quite good), it's just that I wanted to hear the all-star Jap cast.

I think I like the main cast of this game a lot more than P3 or P4's. Something about them seems more fleshed out and realistic about them at times. Plus the vitriolic buddies of the group (i.e Ryuji and Ann) act more like legit friends that trade barbs with each other rather than prior games (i.e Junpei and Yukari// Yosuke and Chie).

I usually ignore the manga adaptations, and the anime adaptations have all been pretty bad, I only use "Yu narukami" in reference to Greyhaired boy because Persona 4 Arena uses the name, I have never used the name for my ingame character in Persona 4 Golden tho, I refuse.

Yeah, I don't get how can anyone say either the plot or the characters are inferior to those of Persona 4, and I a huge Persona 4 fag, I bought a Yu Narukami Figma figure when I was in Akihabara and I bought a PSvita for the only porpouse of playing Persona 4 Golden for fucks sake, I am not a newbie latching onto the latest game, and I will tell you Persona 5 is superior in almost every way. Anyone saying Persona 4 had better anything is just a fanboy who probably just plays the games for the Waifus.

Persona 3 I was never a big fan of, I think the party had very little chemistry from beginning to end and I straight up started Pressing Triangle over certain characters dialogue late into the game because I found them that insufferable, also the combat in Persona 3 was shit, like straight up shit, it tried to cover how shit it was by introducing even more shitty elements like Party members acting on their own and overriding the AI parameters you set for them so you couldn't exploit the shit system they had and the plot was extremely barebones and the anime cutscenes were laughably low budget. I liked Junpei, Mitsuru and Akihiko tho.

Yep, pretty much everything you said. I played Persona 4 Golden for more than 200 hours and I agree with you.

The only minor things that bothered me was one track of combat music and a bit lack of challenge.

I mean, I have never struggled too much against bosses and I had more trouble with a brainwashing miniboss in mementos.

Yahtzee reviewed this game and he had little to complain about, which means a lot.

The challenge is weird in the game, because I have beaten most story bosses in one try even playing on Hard yet a single botched ambush can end up with me getting fucked in a single turn. I think that's pretty Megaten.

Agreed. The only thing I may say P4 Golden does better is the longer number of days to do everything but conversely, it make sense why P5 has less days (though the unskippable cutscene days are annoying).

The only boss fight that gave me trouble was Madarame (on my first run with average leveled Persona) and that's because of that one attack of his which can be managed if you know what to do.

Even on Normal, some random encounters are tough (or at the very least, taxing on resources). Especially the Anubis encounters in the Pyramid.

I would be okay with Persona 5 having DLC that added in extra days and another adventure, but Atlus is kinda small and they seem more focused on Skins for the DLCs.

I get the feeling that Atlus may make something akin to Golden or Fes. Persona 5 Crimson perhaps?

Shiat I managed to max Sojiros Coop and Waifu Futaba at the last second, Mishima is constantly unavailable so his Coop is now stuck at Rank 9, same with Ryuji, which annoys me. Poor sweet Haru just ended up Rank 1 forever because I don't have the time to up Proficiency.

If they make a "FES" version and release it on PS3 and 4 I hope they at least take adavatage of online capabilities and have it available as an expansion to those who bought the original.
