Morty is assertive and submissive. Rick cares and doesn't care. Beth loves and hates jerry. Summer is confident and insecure. Jerry is the only consistent character in the show. :/. I don't understand your double standard for each show.
I don't watch Rick and Morty for the drama, and I don't pretend it is a deep show. I just think it used to be a smart comedy that presented hilarious takes on sci fi premises.
In Bojack Horseman is obvious the writers just absolutely hate the type of people the yare writting, and they write their misery with all the malice they can conjure up. Everybody's problems are banal and thus none of their self destructive behavior ever feels interesting or compeling.
Sure bojack character development may happen at a snails pace and occasionally regress but that's exactly what the show wants to to be. "After a shitty day people just want to sit down and watch good people overcome their problems in 22 minutes" from the get go the show wanted to be the antithesis of that.
Morty is also not assertive and Submissive, he is a teenage boy who is easily led but Rick's attitutde is making him grow a spine, that happens, Rick likes to pretend that he is an uber cool infallible genius but he is constantly shown to no be so (until season 3 that is), Summer is not confident, ever, she is a teenager and she is kind of a bitch so she takes out her insecurity on Morty by latching onto Rick.
Bojack is about depressed people watching shitty caricatures be miserable for 22 minutes just to feel they are watching something smart because depression.
Season 3 really fucked up the character's arcs... it was still fun and by itself is good but when put into the overall characters story arcs it's kinda shit.
I don't think it's "smart" I never claimed that. I think it's well written (at least post season one) and I've never seen a show take this route before. It's like if Peter griffin had to deal with the shitty things he does to his family in each consecutive episode. It's refreshing.
Diane seems to be Taylor made for the writers to make some kind of point about third wave feminism, but because every single aspect of the show is heavy handed and disingenuous it all feels like a show writen by an alien.
Todd is the ""Wacky hijinks" enabler of the show (because adult animation always needs those) and he grows more retarded each season, then they threw in the "He is asexual" to try to give him depth in the hackiest way possible.
I got a dude basically singing the sermon of the Bojack bible on an FB group who said the show was deep and high quality and complex. I think the Bojack Fanboys are as bad as the R&M Fanboys.
The very idea that something is subjective is also subjective so it can't be a fact. Also there are plenty of things that can be measured and discussed.
