A New "I Am Legend" Movie

Oh just you wait... We've got another year of W... It will get worse... More parties involved... now Turkey is on the warpath.

Honestly, I may go see this movie. It does not look all that bad and I don't think its really going to overshadow Vincent Price & Charlton Heston's film.
 
I get what there is to hate about this and all, but I think I will thoroughly enjoy the movie, in the same way I will thoroughly enjoy Fallout 3...

Because I don't compare it to the original and base it on its own intrinsic entertainment value and not some sort of arbitrary canonical ethic.

Sure, in both cases I'd rather have a proper continuation of the spirit, but thats not to say anything that is 'improper' is also bad, that is self-marginalizing my own values based on excessively rationalized means.

In short, will this movie be memorable?
No fucking way.
But I'll probably enjoy watching it. Maybe even a lot.
 
The comic is called XKCD. The url is xkcd.com, as you'd expect. I know this comment is extraneous, but I'm an appreciator and the guy puts his stuff out under the creative commons 2.0 license, so I try to spread the word wherever I can.

As far as I Am Legend is concerned, I'm a big fan of Price's version and a quasi-fan of Omega Man, so I was inclined to rail against this one. I read a magazine article the other day that caused me to raise an eyebrow, though... apparently, this is supposed to be an incredibly quiet film... lots and lots of dead air. And though they're downplaying the vampirism angle and making the dog a long-term addition, Will Smith isn't supposed to be anything close to an action hero.

Honestly, I'm inclined to give this one a shot. I mean, Big Willie Style isn't the first guy I'd picture in this role, but honestly, Vincent Price's role in Last Man On Earth was a little out of the ordinary for him, too. And it's not like Will Smith can't act-- watch Pursuit of Happyness before trying to argue this point with me-- but that he's just not normally called upon to do so. A lot of people didn't see Tom Hanks pulling off a one-man show, either, but Castaway was a pretty decent film. I'd say Smith's got at least a 50-50 chance, provided the screenwriters didn't ruin the film before he got there.

After edit: And, especially after the bevy of hoaxes that've been perpetrated on the unwitting, I make it a policy to never, never trust "script leaks" to be anything close to the actual screenplay.

It looks like remake of 'The Omega Man' which itself is a medicore-action film but the newer one has less action-scene. *SPOILER*:
















What I like about this movie:
1. CG. The scene of New York city in ruins is probably the most memorable stage. A must for every hardcore post-apocalyptic fanatics :lol:
2. The emotion of protagonist facing loneliness while hoping to find other living human.
3. Arnold Schwarzenegger is not in. Seriously, if he's in, it might turn into a 'zombie-killing with tons of ammunition and bomb movie' :roll:

What I don't like about this movie:
1. Cheesy humor.
2. Cheesy creature design (what not vampire?!)
3. Ridley Scott is not the director. I like his style which use lots of smoke to create a blur and foggy atmosphere.
4. The ending feels like the end of a MTV (not surprisingly the director begins his carrier directing MTV) :roll:

Just saw it myself. I'd give it a 8.5/10

My suspicions of this film being sub-par were completely obliterated. I was very intrigued by the choice and sparse placement of the music throughout the film. I think the idea was to give one the impression that Will and his dog were very much alone.

Every time I had the slightest inkling that the plot would develop into another 'Hollywood everyone lived happily ever after films' I was pleasantly surprised.

Great film, I highly recommend it and think many of us (including myself) need to eat our earlier words and or thoughts on this one.
 
That's good to hear! I will see it when it comes out here. :)
On a slightly related note, did they show the new Batman (Dark knight) trailer before the film? I've seen a low quality hand-held recording, and it looked pretty good.
 
Excellent, I shall make sure I see it then. I love Movie trailers almost as much as the movie itself. I'm weird like that.
 
After watching The Mist and almost falling asleep at how awful it was (thank god for alluc.org), I'm actually looking forward to this.

I thought the Mist was a good movie, which is more than I can say for I Am Legend, which if anything, is an eye-candy-filled PA story that's nothing like the book except for scenario and name, kind of like Fallout 3.

I've learned to not expect a movie to emulate the book... It just doesn't happen like one would hope. To the film makers credit, its quite hard to emulate any book. From what I've heard the Stephen King book created into a film (The Myst) was VERY close to accurately depicting the book.

All in all, I just don't expect to see a movie following the book. If you can get by that, I think one would come to the conclusion that its a very well done film. One that stands out from the Hollywood norm.

Ok. Take away the book. The eye-candy-filled PA story that's nothing new other than the plot of "lots of humans dead, God is an asshole, but we will prevail" is not really all that exciting. It's just nice to look at.

Compare that to the Mist, which if you were to take away the book, you still have a decent movie (which sadly isn't scary for the viewer) ends in such a way as to stand out from the typical mass of movies out there. The Mist, I think, is a far better movie than I Am Legend, which didn't impress me except for the PA NYC pans. It's a tolerable plot, but nothing I'll praise or think about for days on end.

Also, do note that I'm not even done reading the I Am Legend book yet. I didn't read the book at all before I saw the movie, and instead just discussed the movie with someone who did read the book.

Well at least the movie got the "God is a asshole" part right. I actually like Will Smith and really hate the fact that I have no money to watch the flick. I am pleasantly surprised that it doesn't have as much action as Omega Man though. That is a good thing IMO. Can't believe the movie is only a hour and forty minutes though. I figured they would have thrown a lot of junk in there to fill up the two hour slot like a lot of movies nowadays.Glad this movie strays from the normal Hollywood crap though. Score one Willie.
