About the residents of Modoc's Ghost Farm

LambentEarache

First time out of the vault
I heard from someone that they're vampires. I never heard anything about that before, and no one in the Ghost Farm mentions it. I always thought they were just afraid of the outside. What are they supposed to be exactly?

What do you think it is....Fallout 3!?

Definitely not vampires man. They are closer to the people off of "Beneath the Planet of the Apes".....

Yes, they state their ancestors didn't go up to the surface because they were scared, and then they adapted to be underground so their skins and eyes aren't well protected for the sun.
Nothing in the game (maybe in Fallout Bible says something else, I didn't read it yet) is said that make you conclude they turn into vampires.
As a matter of fact, I think they were killed by Modoc inhabitants, but is just a guess because I don't remember it being mentioned again in New Vegas, and the other ending for them is to form a pretty succesful farming city, which I think should mean some of the Sharecroppers came from Modoc.

Strange people indeed. Curious way of asking the player for help forcing you to do so. The first guards are not so diplomatic and you are not allowed to leave 'till you decide to help them.

Besides, even if you help them, your karma status in that location remains neutral (does anyone know why???) so I don't know what to say about them...

If you mean the reputation, I'm pretty sure I got idolized. Maybe you didn't complete the quest, to get that quest really finished and actually being helpful you must make sure that Modoc will not try to kill them all. At least that's what I would expect.

Right. I just didn't know for sure. I knew agoraphobia was likely. Thanks.

Plus sensitivity to the sun, which causes them to prey on Modoc's livestock at night.

We were talking about how some of the character concepts are pretty much lifted from Fallout 1. Instead of light sensitivity, Arefu's "vampires" stalk on the livestock for a similar reason.

Slags didn't prey on Modoc's livestock, they just made a farm... Arefu's "vampires" were actually more like cannibals in withdraw. Think about the blood like nicotine chewgum. At least that's what I remember from the dialogues, I may be wrong.

Related question, Where is the Ghost farm? I can never complete this quest because I never found it

It gets marked on the map when it starts. It's northeast from Modoc, a really short distance, IIRC.

It's pretty much that. The Family use blood to sate their "cannibalistic" urges as a result of some sort of mutation, with Vance teaching them self-discipline and the lifestyle of "vampires" of legend in order to keep them from feeding on humans.

The Slags had pretty much made up the "Ghost" story in a similar vein (making themselves look like supernatural creatures), although it was more for outsiders rather than themselves.

Yes and no. They didn't prey on anything, nor they had any special urge to do anything. They can't stand in the sun, so they made up that story to keep people from taking the farm.
They don't prey on anyone, they try to scare people to keep their source of food. Also, the origin of that ghost story was Karl, when he saw them work he thought they were ghosts. THEN, they started faking dead people to avoid Modoc inhabitants from going there after Karl's escape, IIRC.

Part of that is the whole facade about the "bodies" - I may have just assumed they'd gotten the brahmin or the brahmin parts for the fake bodies from Modoc.

Nevertheless, the whole concept of an underground group with an unusual mutation under the guise of a supernatural facade at odds with a nearby community that's scared of them was more than enough comparison for me. The town in question thinks the other group may have killed one of their own (Karl for Modoc, Ian West for Arefu), and it's up to the player character to settle the differences with the best possible outcome having the two work with each other rather than wiping out one side.

Well, as for the big picture, yes, they're similar.
The brahmin parts for the fake, there's nothing that make me think they came from Modoc. Noone ever mentioned stolen brahmin or something like that. I think it's more like a mistake in the plot (it should probably be molerat meat, being that where their meat come from).

Seeing as the Slags are generally non-violent and have limited time outside, I had assumed they had taken the brahmin from Modoc, as opposed to domesticating some wild brahmin. That may be my mistake for assuming, hehe.
