Adding Remastered music

First time out of the vault
I see in Sfall 4.2.3 that there is an option to use alternative music formats. I want to use the remastered fallout soundtracks included with GOG's release. Do I have to rename those tracks to the same ones used by fallout 1 &2?

I find it hard to believe that nobody has tried to use alternative formats...Is there anybody that can answer my question?

I gues nobody ever messed with this function anyways..

But based on my redneck assumption I guess You still need to rename those tracks to what they are in fallout and place them where they belong in game.. ( search fallout2.cfg for that).

the thiing this function You talk about does, is simply allow the game to use something different than *.ACM flie extension, which is boud to fallout. But don't ask me which file formats it supports .wav .mp3 beats me...

Yeah.. so probably .mp3 aren't supported. You'd probably have to decompress them to .wav
I think this is suported because it being a legacy format that does not require specific codecs, on the contrary to .mp3. Besides are those .mp3 remasters from Ion Zur for Fallout New Vegas? if this is the case than those are crap and original .acm files have far better quality than .mp3 even at 320kb/s which is theoretical max for .mp3 . .acm is an uncompressed format just like .wav so the audio quality of an raw uncompressed audio is *always* better than compressed audio. with the only exception possibly beeing FLAC, because FLAC is losseles audio just like .wav .

Hope this sheds light on what to expect form *so called* remastered mp3 music.

@gustarballs1983 thnk you gustar I'm aware of formats and blah, blah, blah. I just wanted to use the remastered soundtrack that came with fallout1 and fallout2 with GOG download.

Well.. You can always use a format converter to change it back to .wav . and if that doesn't help You can always convert it to 'fallout native' .acm format from .wav as the tools to do that are probably possible to get from russian modders. wav2acm ,as that's what you'llbe looking for once you convert to .wav, was floating around the net ways back. It's on russian sites nowdays. If those GoG files are indeed better quality (statics and hissing reduced and overall cleared soundwaves) you should be able to feel the difference while running Fallout games. just remember to put them in data/music and name them properly. the fil must be named exactly the same as original or it won't playback ingame.

EDIT:

A little update the app is called snd2acm.exe and it is in Dobrovik's archive ( link here on nma in stickies) and also I've paid gog.com a visit to check on my collction and haven't noticed any remastered soundtracks. gog com just converted game soundtracks from .acm first to .wav and later to .mp3 so that folks could listen to to fallout's music with sound players on the go as they don't support the .acm format. it's not some kind of remaster as it definetly says 'original soundtrack' in the downloads section.

Yes, for example you need to rename 03-Khans_Of_The_New_California.mp3 to 05RAIDER.mp3 and put it in the same music folder as original .acm files.

SO it does indeed work with mp3s, and here i thought it's wavs only...

EDIT:

Am I missing somethng, or there are indeed remastered soundtracks in newer gog releases?
I got my copies during bethesda pulling off classic fallouts from all stores and gog made a promotion 48h for free or was it only 24h.. nvm. that's the way i got classic fallouts in my gog collection. So is it any different from bethesda version?

Set to 1 to automatically search for alternative formats (mp3, wma, wav) when Fallout tries to play an acm
;Set to 2 to play music files in the absence of original .acm files in music folder
AllowDShowSound=0

Hmmmm, I've tried this before but no dice. I'll keep investigating.

Maybe this is a fallout 1in2 problem, cuz thats what I'm trying to use it on...

@Gizmojunk Sweet thanks, I knew there were some somewhere. Now if I can just get these to work in game. I've tried the methods listed above and can't seem to get them to work. Always tries to play .acm in the debug report.
