Aliens Invade Fallout 3

First time out of the vault
IGN reports on two new Fallout 3 DLCs, as well as the fact that all Fallout 3 DLCs will no longer exclusive to the Live system but expanding to PS3, and now with more aliens!
Point Lookout takes players to a new swampy area with new quests. Mothership Zeta features a return of the aliens who are described by Bethesda as "pissed." The download allows players to experience an alien abduction. Both Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta will be priced at 800 Microsoft points (US $9.99). Point Lookout will be available in June for Xbox 360 and PC while Mothership Zeta is slated for July on the same platforms.

Operation: Anchorage will be released for PS3 in June with The Pitt and Broken Steel following with 4-6 weeks between each. Exact release dates will be announced in the future. Both Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta will eventually find their way over to PS3 as well, though they will come after the first three add-ons have made the leap.

IGN: Without spoiling too much for us, what is the general plotline of Point Lookout's new quests?

Todd Howard: Yeah, I really don't want to spoil it yet. It has a swampy-horror vibe. It's the brainchild of Joel Burgess and Nate Purkeypile, two of our best people here. Their pitch was, "picture backwoods Maryland, where the bombs didn't actually fall, but the world has left it behind." It's also big. Really big. It's a mini wasteland swamp to explore. It has a main quest, side quests, etc.

IGN: What about for Mothership Zeta?

Todd Howard: If you poke around Fallout 3, you can find a crashed UFO with an alien inside that is broadcasting a signal your Pip-Boy picks up. This is where you can get the alien blaster. Well, Mothership Zeta is answering the distress call. You get abducted and the whole thing takes place on a giant alien spacecraft. It's one of those classic 50's B movie type things, but with a harder edge.

So its true?

Though ... I am not sure if this alien-horror thing is really something that should be in fallout. I never saw the alliens as part of the game anyway but just a random encouter for just fun. Now a whole DLC about it ... can the milking of the franchise even become worse?

Links here, too.

Alien Abduction made me cringe, seems quite gimmicky. 800 points just for a "challenge"? What ever to good old-fashioned CONTENT? Bloodmoon, Tribunal and Shivering Isles were all quite good expansions. I'd prefer one decent expansion over 5 mediocre DLC releases. They love their money, though.

Edit: I know a few people who will be happy that the 360 release is getting disc-based releases for the DLC, and not because of a lack of internet connection.

The series always flirted with aliens but kept them at an arms distance as far flung special encounters... I would hope that if you end up face to face with them, it would be in a simulation and not in the "flesh".

edit: BTW did anyone ever read the wiki entry for Tactics 2? I would love to see them do something like that... swampy enviroments with the horror element coming from mutated fungus invading animal and human hosts.

While the backwoods Maryland idea is kinda cool, I'm sure their idea of 'swampy-horror' involves reskinning ghouls with swampgrass hanging off them or something.

And the aliens.... i just can't think of anything to say about that.

Also, since the new dlc's aren't going to increase the level cap, how exactly are they going to balance them for level 20's vs. level 30's?

I've always suspected that Todd is either a Zeta Reticulan or Annunaki in human disguise. He probably has some good first-hand material here, so this may be their best effort yet.

The swamp setting sounds interesting, even if I expect it to be just more run n' gun. I had to chuckle at the "It has a main quest, side quests, etc." seems like that's a huge plus he's plugging although I'm sure he didn't mean it that way.

Aliens.. Well....

Yay, I bet we get moar big guns and enemys!!11

New alien blaster rifle, I see you in the distance.

*gnk*

Knowing it they'll justify the aliens by the random none cannon encounters in Fallout 1 and 2.
Or worse say that there was an alien in the Sierra Army Depot despite it being a mutated human.
Elvis, I'ma coming to rescue ya!

Swamp one sounds cool though, but I can't be too optimistic as Todd says these guys are good.

DLC 5: Godzilla.

Todd Howard: So yeah we felt Godzilla was an integral, cool part of Fallout's lore, so for this DLC you basically have Optimus Liberty wrestle Godzilla amongst the ruins of DC. And the player watches. It has quests and side-quests and everything, it's really cool promise.

PS: considering their excuse for bugs was "we did content really fast", do you really think something like "a huge DLC by June and a DLC with completely new art by July" sounds like a particularly good idea? Bethesda, Bethesda never changes.
PPS: 5 DLCs at 10 dollar price-points = full-price game. Yet producing all these DLCs has taken about 6-8 months with a staff of 25. Who honestly still believes we're not getting ripped off here?

Aliens?!?!?!?!?

They even outright said they're not going to be doing a proper expansion... I mean the Elder Scrolls versions were hardly failures...

Plus hard drive issues could blank your data thus losing what you paid for. If you wait then of course you can get the GOTY edition cheap while the online DLC is the same...[/quote]

This is fucking stupid, why would they waste an entire DLC on this?! They could've just made another new explorable area instead, like the Commonwealth.

Commonwealth is for the sequel!

We should really note at this point that out of 5 DLCs, only 2 are clearly nuclear post-apocalyptic, a third is "end of humanity" post-apocalyptic, and 2 are Science Fiction. Way to keep a franchise's focus, Bethesda.

Unless they do something really clever I'm probably skipping the last DLC. The backwoods and swamps does sound like something I might enjoy, and a great resource for mod makers, especially the GTS (global travel system) guys.

This is one of those occasions where I saw a thread about it on the Codex and immediately though "oh, those silly joksters on the Codex are always up for joking about Bethesda", only to find out it's actually true.

Bravo Bethesda. You're doing great in twisting the series into something unrecognizable.

What I wanted most is DLC that while with a new area (like the others) has some fresh and unique enemies, as opposed to slightly changed versions...

...I don't know, maybe have FO3 versions of the geckos, spore plant, mantis, floater, wanamingo etc...

Heck even something from the development concept art had some interesting ideas...
