Apex Legends

So most of you have probably heard of this game by now. It's been dominating Twitch recently and just about everyone and their grandma has seen it by now.

I've been playing it a lot and it's really good. I'd recommend you try it even if you don't like Battle Royales if you don't mind having the Origin launcher. It's by Respawn (the guys who made Titanfall 1 and 2 and some of the dudes from COD4 and MW2). It's free to play as well.
It's based in the Titanfall universe but it's no titans, just legends with abilities but gunplay still matters the most. Movement is also simplified and more BR-esque where there is no wall run or double jump but now you can climb a good bit.

There's a lot about this game I like and a few things I don't care for as much. The only gameplay element hidden behind payment are two legends but like I said gunplay matters the most. Abilities are just playstyles really. And at level 23 and 43 you can unlock one of the legends for free if you choose to do so.

If you queue up alone or with another friend, the game matchmakes you into a party of 3. You're always in a party of three.

Has anyone else tried this game yet? What you do think?

It has lootboxes in it, I won't touch it with a stick solely for that reason and that includes even "trying it". I don't give a damn if it is just cosmetics and I don't believe in the "oh but it's free so we should be more lenient towards it" crap I've heard tons of people go on and on about. Lootboxes are an absolute dealbreaker for me and I'm flabbergasted at how popular this game is after all the shit that has happened. Whales are still out there. People with weak will are still out there. People with a compulsion for getting 100% are still out there. Kids with a parents credit card are still out there. The people susceptible to being gutted by not just the lootboxes but the way overpriced microtransactions are still being gutted.

But hey, it's free to play and fun so who cares.

There are a shitload of other games out there to play, this kind of microtransaction and lootbox bullshit is not going to go away if people don't take a stand against it. And that includes this game.

And let's put it like this, right, let's say Apex Legends continues to be super successful and earn a ton of money, do you think that E-cancel any game we think won't give us enough money in return-A won't cancel any other projects that they are involved with so that they can focus completely on this cashcow? At this point I feel like it's a safe bet to say that they definitely would. Apex Legends' success could be what harms Respawn's ability to work on other projects.

Doesn't matter if YOU don't buy any microtransactions or lootboxes.
The popularity of the game will attract more and more people that do.
Like, take a stand against this shit and just go play anything else.

Man I feel like such a fucking negative nancy saying all of this. But whatever, I guess we'll see what happens if this continues to be a success.
History repeating itself in 3...

[edit]

On a more positive note, I played Dishonered. It was fun. But the "choices matter" thing as usual is pretty much a lie as it doesn't affect anything until like the last 4th of the game. Still, if you want a stealthy boi game set in steampunk (totallynot)England then it's pretty damn fun. Oh and it's just 10 bucks on Steam.

See, I still like games, I'm not negative about everything under the sun. Just bullshit. :)

I'm not for the idea of lootboxes either. I've played plenty of games with them and I've never spent real money on ANY. I think the game industry either needs to regulate itself again or the government will eventually step in. I haven't defended the lootboxes but as a game and the gameplay, it really is worth a try. I like it. I dislike the monetization scheme. Kids shouldn't be able to buy lootboxes anyway. I feel that if kids can't legally gamble for money they shouldn't be able to gamble for other shit that actually gets their brains hooked with visual stimuli and interactivity, doesn't really line up.

As to whether Respawn is allowed to make other games, according to Zampella they are working on something else for Titanfall right now. I just hope EA doesn't pull the plug on it.

If a game is free to play, they ought to just sell cosmetics outright instead of putting them in boxes that random reward you. I've played other games that had worse models that were free to play. I spent like 20 bucks to play the game in closed beta and it came with most of the unlockable playable characters. I never spent money on it again because of the lootboxes. I bought nearly everything in the game with the in-game currency I saved up up until I quit playing the game and a few more characters launched which I of course never got.

It's battle-royale, has microtransactions and is published by EA.

With that in mind, this game can fuck off.

I don't hate the genre inherently just most of the games in it.

As a free to play, I get they want money but the way they ask for money in this game is a bit much. Loot boxes are never a go in my book and the game would be better off without it. And the skins they put up on sale are way over priced and should be sold for money directly not turned into a virtual currency at price points that aren't asked for in the store. I like the game, I dislike their price points and business model for it.

I feel (felt?) the exact same way about Dirty Bomb. Solid game, stupid monetization. Don't pay for shit in these.

Kind of falls under the same situation as Fortnight for me.

Not PUBG, don't care. PUBG is enough of a dumpster fire, but I still enjoy it.

Never saw anything about Apex Legends, only ever heard the name.

I'm not interested in "battle royal" or online multiplayer games, to be honest. I don't like competitive games either. Specially when the game teams me up with random people.
I'm also in the same boat as Mr Fish. I don't like lootboxes, no matter what format.

In sum, it's definitely not a game for me.

I'm pretty much done with multiplayer games forever. Single player games is all i can play now.
