A little quote :

Army frowns on Dungeons and Dragons

IDF says players are detached from reality and automatically given a low security clearance
By Hanan Greenberg

Does the Israel Defense Forces believe incoming recruits and soldiers who play Dungeons and Dragons are unfit for elite units? Ynet has learned that 18-year-olds who tell recruiters they play the popular fantasy game are automatically given low security clearance.

“They're detached from reality and suscepitble to influence,” the army says.

Fans of the popular roleplaying game had spoken of rumors of this strange policy by the IDF, but now the army has confirmed that it has a negative image of teens who play the game and labels them as problematic in regard to their draft status.

So if you like fantasy games, go see the military psychologist.

thoughts? :?

D&D is actually fairly tactical in terms of play, so wouldn't that be good for the soldiers?

It's just a case of stupidity by IDF higher ups. If they knew the kind of gaming activities that went on in the US Military/Navy/AF or in any other reputable military organization they wouldn't be so quick to judge D&D players unworthy of higher clearance.

It just sounds like some psychologist's knee-jerk reaction to gaming. Who wants to bet he's writing a book on how fantasy reading makes you stupid?

Pfft! Like having an active imagination is a valid way to prove your detached from reality. As long as they keep up their delusions during their free time its no worse than alcohol. Besides I dont mean to sound like I understand the necessities of a military life, but wouldnt the use of tactics in the game be beneficial?

Simply put, they don't want soldiers to have an imagination. They really don't want to have anyone who shows imagination or creativity, unless they are already proven to not be a security risk.

It is perfectly fine to be a drunken jarhead that does nothing but watch sports and go out to bars; but when it comes to intellectual pursuits, that realy threatens the military because it might mean problems in boot camp or training - or so according to some drill sgts. and the polished grunt generals.

The is the same reason why they don't like taking people with familiarity with psychology; they can disect the training routine and easily follow in line, able to later shirk the training they were put through that usually builds certain response reflexes in the more simple.

What about officers? You don't want them to make educated decisions either? I can see educated "grunts" as threats, kinda, but you don't want intelligent officers either?

The article is about recruits, not about officer school graduates.

There`s another irony here since D&D was, like many tabletop games and tactical simulations, based in mechanics and protocols that came from military tabletop wargames.

No personal offense to anyone, but the average Amy officer would lose a wits match with a brick. Those who are intelligent and join often have the brains to hide the fact that they are smarter than the average grunt.

There is also a difference between "educated/intelligent" and "imaginative". So when do you plan on enrolling into West Point?

Gunny Christenson, God bless his soul for the good Catholic soldier that he was, had the military's belief about fantasy material. A damn fine Korean War vet, who also had a taste for tabletop strategy games, and we would play with a few of the other vets at the vet's center. He noticed that I had a bit of Warhammer and D&D in my army fig collections, and snorted as he looked them over.

He had that attitude, until I pointed out to him that when you play the war tabletops, you're using a historic set of strategies that are limited to that scope. "Limited? I will show you how limited it is!" I then explained that tanks don't breath fire, fly, and cause some other weird shit to happen, and you have to take all of that into account as well in your strategies.

Click. Naturally, I had to show him the Blood Angels. :D

I never claimed that the army officers were smart. I'd think that they'd want smarter ones though... More imaginative... whatever. Then again, there's probably a reason that we shoot civilians on sight so never mind.

intelligent!=imaginative

Timothy McVeigh was certainly quite imaginative. Stupid, but imaginative, including violating Geneva's by using .50 cal tank mounts against personnel for amusement. Imagination without intelligence or proven security starus is something the military would rather do without for obvious reasons. Too bad the current administration has skewed things a bit badly.

I love all about war strategy, war history, weapons; I even love war movies and videogames. But would I willingly go to war? Hell, no! I know enough about war to stay away of it and to know is not a pleasant thing unless you are crazy.

The only time I would take a weapon to use it against someone else would be to defend myself or my country (particularly my city) from a direct foreign attack in case the defense forces of my country are not able to stop the attack. And even then I would know when to fight and when to run.

That is why I did not joined the army, let someone else more capable and with more time do the work, I just hope there is still peace in my county as well as we don't get involved in wars that are not ours, so I can dedicate my life to more important things than killing people.

About intelligence and education, It is like a knife, you can use it for coocking or for killing.
