I found Bioshock far more consistent in its setting than this, even judging by its trailer from back in the day.
And I'm not being cynical or even necessarily skeptical about it either, I feel nothing for this trailer. A trailers job is to lure an audience in and I personally can't be lured in with this. All I see is pretty visuals which at this point mean nothing to me and random... stuff. Just, here's stuff. It's random, isn't your interest peaked? Not really. I'm not someone who's read a ton of interviews and lurked around the game development like a hawk so I know enough of the backstory to make sense of it.
All I know is that it is in Russia or whatever, robots are around and it got some alternate reality thing going on. But I don't know what kind of game it is. Is it horror? Is it action? Is it RPG in first person? Is it action RPG? Well the trailer says it is action RPG, but I don't see any RPG aspect to it so that means nothing to me. You can easily say one thing and do something completely different because your interpretation of the genre differs from mine.
Is it open world? Is it corridor crawler? Is it semi-open world? Is it linear? Open-ended? Judging from the map it "looks" like it has a lot of places to cover but that trailer map can be awfully deceiving.
Is it Survival? Serious Sam-esque shoot-a-ma-thron? Part of it looks survival esque but then the character pulls some fucking anime fighting moves and it looks silly.
On that note, tone is important. And again I don't know what to make of its tone. The trailer changes from mystery to horror to action to just silly shit constantly that I don't know what I'm to expect from it. Obviously a game can change its tone from time to time so that it doesn't get overbearing by constantly trying to make you feel one solitary emotion throughout the experience but if you're going to introduce new players to a new IP then it is very important to make sure they know what the overall tone of the game is going to be like.
And the trailer tells me nothing of the backstory either. It's just... Stuff. It's like if a Fallout Trailer were to just show you a bunch of iconic stuff with zero explanation of what it is. Like one second it is a BOS logo, the next it is Master making a facial animation, the next it is a super mutant blown up by a missile, the next is you digging up Willy in Golgotha, the next is a shot of Cathedral, the next is you getting diddled by that super mutant in Broken Hills (Frank?). I just can't be intrigued by this because I don't know what I'm looking at and the trailer gives me zero incentive to want to look into it either.
I'm not saying anything about the quality of the game because I know nothing about it. My sole criticism here is the trailer. It is supposed to entice me into wanting to play this game and I don't understand what the hell I'm looking at. It's stuff. I can tell you that. A lot of stuff. And things happen, I don't know what those things are but they sure do happen. And boy would you look at robo breakdance over here, but wait there's more! Here's a humanoid creature made up of blood vessels but let's not pay attention to that did we go over how good our game looks graphically cause here's some scenes of that!
A lot of things.
A lot of stuff.
And I understand nothing of it.
I have more than enough games in my backlog as to not be starved for a new game so I can't be enticed by this.
You can't just show me stuff and things and oh look it's so pretty and expect that to be enough for me.
I need context, and this trailer has none as far as I can see.
First impression means a lot, and my first impression is confusion to the point of disinterest.
Hell, judging by the block of texts I've written I'd say I'm more interested in talking about how non-interested I am of the trailer than the actual contents of the trailer. I had to give the trailer a once over as I wrote this post and I was just insanely bored the entire time.
