Bethesda: actually, Fallout is ours

By dint of incredible coincidence, VG247 conducted a phone interview with Pete Hines just last night. Pete Hines preemptively refutes Eric Caen's claims.
“We own the rights to the MMO,” he said when asked if Caen’s comments were true.

He continued: “We own the rights to everything Fallout. The licence is ours. Fallout belongs to us. That’s what I’ll clarify.

“Beyond that, I’m not commenting on anybody else’s comments. It’s a legal matter. A specific MMO or project or any of that stuff, the lawyers are all going to sort it out.”
Listen to it yourself.

So Pete et al owns the rights to a Fallout MMO (and everything), and beyond that, the lawyers are going to sort out who has the rights to a Fallout MMO?

You know, what and how he says it all, it makes me wonder if he even knows anything about the case and it's development, except that his company is involved in some court case with Interplay. Or maybe he's so confident in his lawyers that he doesn't even follow the case. :)

i figure a lot of the parts of the full sale of fallout contract will be invalidated or else parts of it will be considered "bad faith" parts.

beths only choice is to some how prove that interplay knowingly signed it with those "bad faith" elements WITHOUT economic coercion on beths part.

And some of Beth's latest statements, e.g. the one about IPLY only having the rights to the name Fallout from the beginning, are weakening their case in that regard. No one in their right mind will believe that Interplay knowingly signed a contract that let them only use the Fallout trademark.

Still, I don't see them getting back the whole franchise as likely, even if not entirely impossible.

They are all wrong, its actually mine! you will see, my lawyer is going to sort it out good and proper.

WTS: FO-license (without MMOG, but with assets from FO1, 2 but not FOT and parts of FO3 and different parts from NV. Sound optional except the inon zur stuff that is included in sale as is. POS-stuff for free with fines imposed if not taken. Rights to develop and advertise included, rights to distribute and sell excluded. Rights to sue me excluded. Price is 10 million but i want to have a look at your wallet in 7.5 years and if it contains less than 2000 bucks at that time, all rights and ownership of your car revert to me. Any buyers?

As much as I hate the Caens for destroying Interplay, they are rebuilding it now (are they, right?), I'd rather see them get the license back. Bethesda is also completely different from what it was back in the day (aaaah, Daggerfall...).

But, honestly? Who cares, I just hope inXile does some good work on that Wasteland 2 project, and maybe some other studios come up with decent post-nuclear RPGs.

Btw, I guess if it's too much to ask for turn based, isometric, dialogue driven, I can settle for anything that looks/feels like Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines.

This comment would have been exponentially more awesome with the [intelligence] tag behind it.

Priceless !

What a unscrupulous bastard . Hell I imagine most are , but this guy thinks he invented all there is to Fallout franchise ...

Even if Interplay got the licence back for some reason, wouldn't it be a lose-lose? I mean in no way are they going to create another non-MMO Fallout that the original fans would fully appreciate and the fans of Bethesda will know full well that future games aren't being made by their favorite house. So what's the point?

They won't win Bethesda fans, but they'll be targetting the casual players who know the name Fallout but don't care what company is on the box.

The way i see it , they can make another "hardcore mod" . So many could and will choose what appeals to them more , do they want to always watch on those H2O number or not .
Original fans take hardcore , Beth fans take casual .
You even had no blood or minimal gore , wimpy combat and more in original games , that isn't hard to change also . Since no one cares about RPG factor that changed much or a little it was a win with Vegas .

In Fallout 3 it was take it or leave it .

This is like two little brats licked the same candy, enjoyed it, and now they're fighting for it, but neither one of them deserve it.

Even though Interplay licensed back the MMO rights, they're still owned by Bethesda. So, in that sense, Pete's comments are correct. I wouldn't read too much into any of this, except to point out that the Caens say something stupid every time they open their mouths.

These guys are seriously incompetent.

Not me. Herve has no talent himself, and his arrogance suppresses any innate talent in his employees.

InXile should do really well with a Wasteland 2. Brian Fargo has some of the best people in the game industry working for him.

While Obsidian can claim to have the most well known developers, inXile has real quality personal.

Plus, Brian's management style just fosters quality and cooperation, while Furgus only falsely fuels egos.

I know I will incur the wrath of NMA posters for this, but the days of isometric games are really gone along with spats, running boards, and 8-bit graphics.

Probably in the world of AAA titles. I have faith in the indie market.
