Bethesda: actually, Fallout is ours

InXile should do really well with a Wasteland 2. Brian Fargo has some of the best people in the game industry working for him.

While Obsidian can claim to have the most well known developers, inXile has real quality personal.

inXile has not made anything yet aside from these small games and the new Bard's Tale. I played Hunted for a bit and it was rather meh. As for Wasteland 2, I pretty much lost interest after Jason Anderson left.

Dunno why he left. Dunno what stage it was in when he left. Dunno what the rest of the team is like. So, hurf, not cutting my interest short on that note.

Well, I might get more interested when I know more about the game. The only thing I knew about it was that Jason Anderson was working on it so that's why I was interested.

Shit, I missed the news that Jason Anderson left. Great. Fucking quitter. Wonder if they pull off a wasteland sequel without him. And honestly, considering that there hasn't been any real info about, it might not even be in development right now. Or he may have left because the development was shut down. Meh

I know I will incur the wrath of NMA posters for this, but the days of isometric games are really gone along with spats, running boards, and 8-bit graphics.
Probably in the world of AAA titles. I have faith in the indie market.

My brother wears spats, the new Megaman games are 8-bit and there are some really nice isometric games on the DS.
Running boards... I don't know. :P

Ha, looking at his page on The Vault. Goddamn. Fallout 2 - FOOL - and possibly Wasteland. He is a fucking quitter.

And I wear a fedora, but that doesn't mean such things are mainstream enough for a company to produce a game that way.

Don't get me wrong, I greatly enjoyed the Fallout isometric view, but these days, its all about Halo, WoW, and Rift type interfaces - POV.

Except if you go for indie titles. There are still people out in the world who would buy such games, after all.

You most likely will not get rich, though.

Typical Video Game Production planner

Step 1: Purchase new or use existing IP franchise and upgrade it to please the cool hip kids thus eliminating the previous smaller yet loyal fanbase.

Step 2: ?

Step 3: Profit.

I think people forget to consider many factors when they simply say "tourn based doesnt work anymore" or "ISO/Topdown view is dead". ~ Interesting is to note here the way in which Diablo 3 is developed. Not traditional Diablo 1/2 perspective, but sure not thirdperson/first person either ... which they could have easily done as well.

Because, even with new generations of gamers the average age is around the 30s or at least mid 20s. Meaning most of the people who play new games today have grown up with the games which well many see as "old school" today. Or at least they know about them. I dont think the market for it is simply dead or there are no fans. I see it just that you can not build such a hype for a Jagged Alliance 3 or a game in the style of Fallout like as you can with Halo for example. GTA or anything similar where the visuals take a big part in the presentation. Though I do think with new visuals even a tourn based game could be very appealing. But a studio has to know that such a game would not be suddenly some Crysis 2 or CoD YXZ. It would have to meet the expecations of a fanbase in love for tourn based gameplay - To say it is not there ignores all the people that play pokemon games, if I remember correctly Civlisation is somewhat tourn based as well and the Total War games too (I think).

To simply say its dead would be like claiming the market for simulations is dead as well just because they dont produce block-buster titles which sell 3 millino units in the first 48 ours. A team or company does not need even such numbers to survive they just have to make profit. Its only a company like Bethesda which needs such sales. Or if you want EA or Rockstar games.

I'm sure Diablo 3 will be quite a success.

You sure own the body. But you will never own the "soul".

rofl Pawel I was just going to jump in and say InXile has not shown me the goods yet. I too played Hunted and spent some time with the production team. MEHHHHHHHH

Honestly, if Fargo wasn't there - would any of us care?

Civilization V doesn't exist.

You heard it here first, folks.

Isometric view is still used, but not in big projects anymore (except for RTS obviously) . And Diablo III is an exception rather than a rule, since Blizzard is one of the few studios that makes PC only games and is keeping it old school. So old school in fact that starcraft II has nothing new but graphics.

Honestly though, I wish independent studios has more talented people involved. They could easily make games like F1/2/Van Buren without spending too much cash and get decent enough sales from hardcore gamers. Torchlight did pretty well for example, selling close to a million copies. While I do like F:NV and think it's a pretty good formula, I'd love to play something like F1/2, with simple graphics and fantastic writing.

I believe a good chunk, if not the majority of titles published by Paradox Interactive also use an Isometric view.

Considering how they just held a pretty big convention in New York I'm guessing it's working pretty well for them.

There are plenty of old school games being released mainstream. Braid, Limbo, Super Meat Boy are in essence classical platformers. And then you even see old franchise revivals such as the classic Mega Man or the new Sonic 4 making big hits although Sonic 4 is quite lacking. Even Dragon Age for PC could be argued as a isometric style game (at least its the only way I can actually play it) and from what I've heard its unanimously praised for little bits such as that isometric view which make it easier to play than it's inferior console brethren.

All it takes is marketing. And maybe a little reputation in the case of Diablo III. You just have to have a product that is unique. It's not "style" I see as the issue. Its a lack of creativity. Eventually it'll happen to FPS' games and big name corporations will be looking for the next fad genre to rape. Bringing back a visual style is not going to cure stupidity. It's creativity and as I see it, its completely dead in mainstream gaming.

Too bad the isometric view has been removed from Dragon Age 2.

Yeah, and the game is going to suffer from it too.

I love Bioware's excuse. "Because we want to show off our pretty ceilings"

Shorter game length? More cinematic gamplay? A Dialogue wheel? Human-only driven storyline?

These were not the things fans asked for. They wanted voiced dialogue, more class options, a better designed skill and talent system. Not this mass effect inbred that is being released.
