Rumor: Bethesda Making Direct Sequel to Oblivion
Logan Westbrook | 23 Nov 2010 12:14

A mold-breaking new Elder Scrolls is supposedly in the works, and is already at the stage of recording voices.

An anonymous source - who is reportedly so close to Bethesda that he had design documents in his hand - has suggested that the fifth Elder Scrolls game will be a direct sequel to 2006's Oblivion. This would be the first time that an Elder Scrolls game had directly followed its predecessor.

A member of Eurogamer Denmark's editorial staff reportedly was able to coax certain details about the game from the source while on a plane. Apparently, an NDA prevented the source from saying too much, but he suggested that the game would once again feature the Blades, the Emperor's elite guards and spies, and something referred to only as the "Dragon Lord." Bethesda is reportedly recording voiceovers for the game in the next few weeks, which suggests that the game is in the later stages of development, as it means that the story is finalized and all the dialogue is written.

It's hard to know what to make of these rumors, because "direct sequel" is a fairly vague term. It implies that you will play the same character you played in Oblivion, but says very little else. A direct sequel could be set immediately after Oblivion, where you and the Blades must deal with the aftermath of the demonic invasion as it happens, or it could be set years later when some new danger is threatening all of Tamriel. Of the two, I'm hoping it's the latter, although ideally, it will be something new entirely, rather than another trek round Cyrodiil. Besides, my old Oblivion character has more than enough to do as the champion of the Imperial Arena, archmage of the Mages Guild and head of the Fighters Guild, without adding another grand adventure to his to-do list.

I would laugh my ass off if this was confirmed as true.

Why advance your trademark series lore-wise and world-wise? Create multiple sequels to your best-selling game instead. Kids will love it.

This could be a good thing, I guess. Instead of raping the entire series' lore, they're focusing their molestation efforts on the Imperial Province alone. Maybe the other areas will remain untouched and pure.

Can not be that much. :p

Hmm, with Fallout 3 they skipped the pre design phases and went directly to development, I am pretty sure this is the same case.
Sort of making stuff up as they go along.

Which is funny, because in my opinion, it's the worst thing you can do in game development. And you can feel it a lot in Fallout 3's main story.

That would mean that it would probably take place in Cyrodiil? Again? This seems pretty unlikely, but if it is - fuck that! Cyrodiil is already the most boring place in the elder scrolls setting.... This would deminish their last advantage - exploration (not that it is super good at the present either).

Wonder if they will rebuild the whole gameworld or reuse the Oblivion stuff. Because, I mean... would be somewhat bullshit, if nothing will look like it has been before.

It would be bullshit either way, just from different perspectives :D

:irked: Cyrodil was in fact very intresting place acording to Morrowind lore: Lush jungles, ricefields with the greatest city in Tamariel in the centre; Rome mixed with pre colonial Wietnam; new s... sorry Bet remade it into boring generic High fantasy setting. After this gangrape I'm only happy that Obsidian reanimated Fallout franachise; Elder Scrolls are dead and buried to me.
P.S. Rumors are the Worm King Todd will necromade Skyrim. Since I liked Soltheim it's pitty. :(

As I read this, as I did when I read it on UESP a few weeks back, I feel like a kid who, after having his grandfather die a few years ago getting a call saying my grandma has cancer. What's the point anymore?

Well Bethesda is to RPGs what Taco Bell is to Mexican food.

Oh well, I'll always have Daggerfall.

Yeah, I know what you mean but those people will at some point die. And all the kidz will forget those names. Just as they forgot that before the Ninja Mutant Tourtles have been changed in to a family friendly kidz show that it had some kind of role playing game which included even roleplaying necrophila (or something like that).

Imagine a world where Oblivion is the only "Elder Scrolls" people know

The Blades were such a fleshed out and interesting faction the first time around, with unforgettable character like Jofree, and this causes a desire in me, to meet up with them again, and experience the complex depth that leaves me awestruck, when talking to a Blade trooper near Burma, I am often left realing at-

Ok fuck it, fuck Oblivion2, peace out
