Big shit in Thailand

Hmm, probably a good thing the epicentre was in the middle of the sea rather than on land.
I don't know about that. The tidal wave will have done most of the damage.
You may be right about people not caring, it's barely been on the news at all. Well, either that or I've just not been watching the news much, with it being Christmas.

A landquake would probably have caused irreversible damage to the area, though. It's been all over the news all day, but only because there might be Swedes dead, with 15000 of them being in Thailand. If it had been in the middle of Africa, it would've been meh. Many tourists got flushed as they were sunbathing on the beaches, though.

Pretty old news by now, but meh... My brother is in India, good thing he is on the west coast and not the east. 8.9 on the Richter scale. Several thousand dead. Nobody is going to care, obviously, as most of them were second hand humans.
"Second hand"? Don't you mean, "second rate"? How can anyone be a "second hand" human? Well, except your sister.

I just hope my brother is ok. He'd better get off his ass and mail me soon.

Second rate sounds more "citizen", but whatever, Fatty. Sorry, Ratty.

I hear 15000 dead is the latest number.

I don't think they're second-rate humans, western nations do. Just watch the news, geez...

They don't think they're second-rate humans. They just think nobody gives a fuck because it's not exactly a country/island people can relate to.

The only reason western media deems it worthy to be reported is the fact that western tourists might be among the dead.

I doubt German media would make much of a fuzz about the Isle of Man getting flooded either. Most people don't know much about it, so most people would just shrug and switch channels.
Now if a tsunami crushed Frisco or some coastal region in France or England this would be an entirely different issue.

If people cared about the death of humans equally, there would have been a lot less wars in our past -- to make a subtle Star Trek reference.

Star Trek sucked.

Its also not a subtle reference if you declare where its from. ;)

On the one hand, this is a tragedy. But on the other hand, I can see why Jesus would be pissed at Thailand.

Expect hundreds of businessmen to mysteriously die of argon poisoning next Christmas.

I didn't say it's from TNG and that Riker said something like that when he explained to Data why Worf was pissed off about having lost a member of the away team to a booby trap planted by an extinct species. The episode sucked ass, by the way.

Apart from the fact that this has certainly been in the news, it never ceases to amaze me how people equate news evaluation with human evaluation. This would be true if news and humans were the same thing.

Oh come on. $4 million from the EU in support? Like they couldn't give more. I say we empty Fort Knox and all of the US' banks and whatnot and give it to the people over there.

For the media they are, actually.

In short: no.

How generous of you to want to donate other people's money.

Yessish. Humans cause news. They are strongly related. Humans can be the subject of news.

Of course that doesn't make both equal, but it sure adds a lot of references between both.

Well, at least you've gone from saying they are equal to saying they are not. But you don't seem entirely convinced. If you think about it, do you personally equate the interest you hold or do not hold for, say, certain people or activities or computer games, with some sort of universal measurement of worth and goodness? If you like Bob but detest Bill, does it mean anything more profound than the obvious fact that you'd rather share some tea with Bob than Bill, rather see Bill fall down a cliff than Bob? You probably wouldn't expect Bill's friends and family to agree with your perception, and you'd probably still be shocked to see Bill being abducted horribly by aliens. News evaluation is no more strange or immoral than that.
