Blizzard Calls DRM a “Losing Battle”

Then the online mode/Battle.net is its DRM.

Don't mince words like that for popularity points, Blizzard, it's weak.

I don't get it.
It must have some kind of DRM, since you wont be able to play the singleplayer without logging in to Bnet at least once...

Battle.net is the DRM. Blizzard is trying to cover that up. :)

And Battle.net is a real piece of shit too, it always fucks up on login systems and "login servers are down" and etcetera, shit's annoying.

Gah, why do people write such text walls in the comments section? :|

That's interesting, although we know that a *crack* or *mod* to allow for LAN battles will probably exist one day or another.
It's turning out to be harder than everyone would've thought actually. That, and Blizzard suing the hackers that make their work public.

ah, corporate control <3

say, I always am wondering to myself, these guys who gets sued and stuff, they are all caught by their IPs? There's no way really you launch a crack or mod without being identified and sued?

That's not what I meant.

If you install it from a DVD on a computer that isn't connected to the internet, then the software that stops you from playing the game until you authenticate qualifies as DRM, yeah?

The people who get sued got caught either by using poisoned torrents (Unlikely), or doing stupid shit like selling pirated movies/etc (Very likely).

Hum, I've read in the US a lot of people get caught only by sharing the file on a peer-to-peer program. The copyright owner just get the identity associated with a given IP from the internet provider and sue the crap out of the poor guy.

this identity associated with IP thingy makes sense. I don't think most of 'hackers' and 'crackers' sell their own stuff.

Really? I never had a problem with it back in the day (WC3 and before) but I haven't used it much since WoW was released (a month and a half of that shit) and D2 online a few times. It was always one of the best online services in my opinion.

Assuming the person cracking the game had a good lawyer, I'd think that they'd be likely to win.

It's been pretty random whose been sued from what I've heard. Either random people sharing the file or the torrent sites hosting the tracker. That said, there is a little thing known as a proxy...

Blizzard is blowing smoke trying to look like a champion of gamers when they really aren't. B.Net account with an online activation (idea stolen from Steam) is far better than all of the installed software DRM, but it's still a pain. Also, I'm sure it won't take long for someone to crack the online activation for piracy which will bring it back to how it was, requiring a legit copy for multiplayer (which is a good route IMO).

That's been done already. All you can do is play against the AI, no way to play multiplayer AFAIK. It was popular the first days the Beta went live, since everyone was damn curious how the game was, and a private Beta was kind of arrogant IMO. The fact remains that if the Beta had been public, Battle.net would've been smoked and crashed in the first hours.

Battle.net was around when WoW was released? I played WoW back in TBC and never once saw anything labelled "battle.net" or "your battle.net account", only once WotLK came out I noticed they started using battle.net login servers and such.

[spoiler:b5881a466e]Hurp durp I play WoW[/spoiler:b5881a466e]

EDIT: Oh wait nevermind:
Wikipedia said:
World of Warcraft initially did not support Battle.net, having separate accounts from Battle.net ones until the revamp of Battle.net on March 20, 2009 which allowed players to merge their World of Warcraft accounts with the new Battle.net accounts.[5] The features of Battle.net utilized in World of Warcraft include allowing players to engage in cross-realm, cross-faction and cross-game chat which allows players to chat with other players from other factions, other servers as well as other games.[6] On November 11, 2009 Blizzard made Battle.net a mandatory feature for World of Warcraft players.[7]

i think its a way to stop people from using hax/cheats

you hack in SC2, you get banned and lose your WoW account too

you run a bot in D3, you get banned in WoW too.

Actually i know from being in the beta that it will work without an internet connection. If you'r interent goes down when you start the beta you get a dialogue with 2 buttons:

play offline and cancel

play offline is greyed out and a tooltip says (singleplayer not avail. in beta)

I was wrong then, back when I played was before it used B.Net.

They said in the interview that you have to autheticate your copy before you can play, so the first time you load it up you have to attach it to a B.Net account.

This is quite hilarious because they have stated:
“The best approach from our perspective is to make sure that you’ve got a full-featured platform that people want to play on, where their friends are, where the community is,” he [Frank Pearce] added.
“We need our development teams focused on content and cool features, not anti-piracy technology.

However they haven't focused on any new content or anything and have instead produced Bnet 2 which seems like a gutted, dumbed down version of the first one. They also removed lan, chat channels, and mockingly introduced region segregation and facebook integration! Yay!

As things stand now I'll be skipping SC2 because giving any money to Blizzard will make me feel all dirty.

I'm totally cool with them requiring you to be connected to Bnet to play. I couldn't give two shits about SC2 in the first place, all I want is Diablo 3 which is one game I wouldn't even consider playing single player.

I'm very excited to see how the new Bnet works in D3, because the current one in D2 blows.

What has been gutted and dumbed down? They have added the ability to download maps from their server instead of having to connect to a game, so they've at least improved that. They have always had servers in different regions, do they no longer give you the option of which server to connect to? I couldn't care less about facebook integration and achievements as long as achievements don't unlock anything (fucking TF2). Removing LAN play pisses me off, especially now that we've heard that you have to activate your game online anyway.

What is it missing that you'd like to be in D2?
