WESTFIELD, Mass. – With an instructor watching, an 8-year-old boy at a gun fair aimed an Uzi at a pumpkin and pulled the trigger as his dad reached for a camera.

It was his first time shooting a fully automatic machine gun, and the recoil of the weapon was too much for him. He lost control and fatally shot himself in the head.
(...)
"The weapon was loaded and ready to fire," Westfield police Lt. Hipolito Nunez said. "The 8-year-old victim had the Uzi and as he was firing the weapon, the front end of the weapon went up with the backfire and he ended up receiving a round in his head."
(...)
Bizilj told the Boston Globe he was about 10 feet behind his son and reaching for his camera when the weapon fired. He said his family avoided the larger weapons, but he let his son try the Uzi because it's a small weapon with little recoil.

"This accident was truly a mystery to me," said Bizilj, director of emergency medicine at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford, Conn. "This is a horrible event, a horrible travesty, and I really don't know why it happened."
(...)
"It's all legal & fun — No permits or licenses required!!!!" reads the ad, posted on the club's Web site.

"You will be accompanied to the firing line with a Certified Instructor to guide you. But You Are In Control — "FULL AUTO ROCK & ROLL," the ad said.

The ad also said children under 16 would be admitted free, and both adults and children were offered free .22-caliber pistol and rifle shooting.

Massachusetts has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. It is legal in Massachusetts for children to fire a weapon if they have permission from a parent or legal guardian and they are supervised by a properly certified and licensed instructor, Nunez said. The name of the instructor who was with the boy at the time was not released.

Let's teach our children how to shoot full auto, FTW!

Darwin Award.

Dumbass, deserves to die. And what kind of fucked up state says it's permissible for children to fire weapons. Period.

I'm by no means against guns, but come on. They should have realized that thing would have had done that.

um, the dad and the instructor were the idiots here, not the kid. he was 8 years old, all he knows about guns is what he gets from tv, comics and games. he had no idea what recoil is. why would he deserve to die? if the bullet had hit the dad I would have only agreed with you.

You people obvious don't detect sarcasm.

No, he didn't deserve any of this, I can't believe this was even allowed.

Remember, I have a kid, do you think I would even consider letting her onto a range, let allow hold a weapon?

I'm no gun-nut or such, but I'm pretty sure that BECAUSE of the uzi's small size the recoil is actually emphasised over a larger fully automatic weapon. This is a sad news story, but im of the opinion that; don't want your kid to be hurt by a gun? make sure there are no guns near your kid.

Only recently I watched a viral video of a middle eastern man firing a pistol in the air at a celebration, then while having a drink put's the weapon on the table, the man's apparent son (sat with him the whole time) aged about 6 or 7 years old, picks up the weapon, and in imitation of his father points the weapon upward, only moments later the weapon is accidentally fired by the young boy, point blank into the man's ribcage.

edit:-
I found the site again, and for any that wish to see it visit http://poststuff5 entensity net/102708/flash.php?media=wedding.flv

(deliberately de-linkified, missing two dots before and after the word entensity. Please don't visit unless of a mature nature definitely not SFW although there is no specific 'gore' or other upsetting imagery, its still not a good thing to watch)

NMA mod's i hope this isnt against anything, if need's i'll edit out the link info etc.

Does it qualify as a Darwin Award if you manage to retroactively remove your genes from the future pool with parental negligence?

Just asking, though. He can make more kids, so it's an Honorable Mention at best.

How the hell did that instructor get a license? Did he confuse UZI with .22 pistol or rifle or what?

heh, detecting sarcasm in plain text isn't that easy you know ;)

Well, dammit anemic, start reading my mind!

Come on!

:)

I fear the gay porn and hundreds of voices I might encounter in there, so I'm just gonna stay away...

a UZI is not small (unless it was a micro-uzi), nor low recoil.
sure, for a grown man, it's pretty controllable and even easy to use with the stock extended/attached.

but for an 8 year old? come on, how retarded can you be?

this is deluded Darwinism, but the kid paid the price for the stupidity of parents. a real shame.

that said, sportshooting is still one of the safest sports known to man. :)

uzis and macs are beasts when it comes to recoil in relation to size. and if even a german knows that, why didnt a weapon instructor and a weapon nut dad? alsoplustoo, children are astonishingly weak. poor kid; but most people are just idiots, iu guess.

UZIs are actually pretty big, well-balanced and not very likely to flip over under recoil.

a Mini-UZI, a Micro-uzi or MAC on the other hand is another thing altogether.

and what does being german have anything to do with (not) knowing things about guns? last time i checked, the german people weren't too bad at waging war. :P
