Brian Fargo talks to Digital Trends, Kickstarter editorials

Brian Fargo has a few short comments on the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter success for Digital Trends. Amusingly, Digital Trends headlined the article with a bit of Rick Lion fanart.
“In addition to more locations, we’ll have the manpower to create more layered effects based on what the player is up to. Cause and effect is everything in a good RPG so triggering based off more variables makes for a better world. This can range from having hundreds of different NPC dialogue remarks based on who is in the party, encounters that react to what you look like, scenes that open up based on how violent you were or perhaps how low your intelligence is. This kind of depth is what made Wasteland 1 so good.”
Furthermore, there's a pair of editorials on the Kickstarter success of DoubleFine and Wasteland 2 available. One rather speculative one from Kotaku/Ripten, and a quote-filled one from the Verge.

EDIT: also, the next Wasteland 2 video update should be up this Friday:
Also I will be putting a new video out this Friday. It will be hard to top the first one but we will have some fun with it.

Another one that says a little something about what's in the design briefs.

t also allows for more varied environments, more character portraits and interesting effects like having radiation clouds that float move over areas.

I think they have a chance to end of sum between 1.7 to 2 millions. I hope of tons of locations, npc's and other content

I'm starting to get scared something will happen to Fargo, I vote we become his elite bodyguard, testing his pizza for poison and taking all attacks directed against him onto our knee.

But... Wasteland had almost none of that.

That is kinda what I thought. Maybe I'm wrong.

"The game mechanics were based directly on those used in the role-playing games Tunnels and Trolls and Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes created by St. Andre and Stackpole. Characters in Wasteland consequently have various statistics (strength, intelligence and luck among others) that allow them to use different skills and weapons. Experience is gained through battle and through use of skills. The game would generally let players advance with a variety of tactics: to get through a locked gate, a player could use his Picklock skill, his Climb skill, or his Strength attribute; or he could force the gate with a crowbar - or a LAW rocket.

Wasteland was one of the first RPGs in which all the characters in the party were not mere puppets for the player to control.[citation needed] The initial band of Desert Rangers encountered a number of NPCs as the game progressed who could be recruited into the party. Unlike those of other computer RPGs of the time, these NPCs might temporarily refuse to give up an item or perform an action if ordered to do so
"

I think he means depth generally, cause and effect, different solutions etc?

He might, but for each example given it would make a lot more sense if you substituted "Fallout" for "Wasteland".

Possibly because Wasteland was built in 1988 where they had so much constraints at that time, important game text had to be written into the actual manual.

The originals scope was limited because technology wasn't capable of bringing a 'fuller' experience - now it is .

This is not a problem in my book, Wasteland 2 seems to be more of a celebration of 90s RPG gaming then a direct Wasteland port - I prefer it this way if I'm honest.

I think people looking for a direct copy of wasteland will be disappointed as that was not what was described on the kick-starter project page

Not to be miffy about him being on Duck and Cover, but doesn't that seem a bad idea? He is no doubt getting interview requests left and right, has to sort out a huge load of shit regarding the project. Will he have time or will, to respond to questions that some/most probably are already in the FAQ or in his interviews.

Just seems a waste of time to me.

Creating community good will and animo is not a waste of time, SumsoluS.

The project is really only at the very start atm. A lot of things have to be done, but generating support and further funding are important as well.

Did they mean, he'd answer the questions in an interview or answer them as they come in the forum? As they come, I'd be suprised if he does..so much to do :)
