Chris Taylor on FOOL beta test

so whats the news on FOOL ?

truth be told, that i dont know who i am hoping will get the right.
i dont trust beth to make a reall FO game, any MMO they will make will be FO3 like appealing to the kids crowd
Interplay on the other hand is too broke to make the required investment to make this game any good and will probably buckle up under the pressure to make a profit.

It depends on what scale the mmorpg is planned. If ist just another wannabe wow with huge hype, millions of expected subscribers, best mmog eva style of fuckup then iplay can't do it. Nor does bethesda tbh. But that course would be stupid anyway imo.

Big hype, pour millions into it, fucking up the launch and fail utterly is the standard life-cycle of new mmorpgs. I would go the modest way of EVE for example: started pretty small, niche game, solid fan-subscriber-base.... profit.

It may not bet he huge multimillion dollar imaginary profit that gives a suit a hard-on, but it IS profit. Steady, secure and long term profit. I think that IPlay could pull off something like that at least better than bethesda. Beth is too megalomaniac for a measured, patient approach.

time to speculate, buy some, and ditch everything after the first hype campaign that's bound to happen (but before the total crash)?

agreed 100%. I've said from the beginning that if they're aiming too high with this, it's sure to fail. it'll either way have a shitload of suscribers the first month due to it being a Fallout game, but I don't have confidence in Interplay to let it compete with the big ones out there. if they start out small and make it more player-driven they can get a niche market and make something really good out of it. which would fit the Fallout universe better too, rather than a shitload of 14-year olds wasting their lives raiding and talking shit on the general chat channel.

what worries me however is that they've said this game is supposed to help them build a budget for future game developement. which sounds to me like they're gonna aim fairly high. on the other hand, I can imagine even the smaller niche mmo's bringing in enough money to go around.
