Counterproductivity

Simple question:

I am looking for the name of a certain syndrome, a counterproductive one. It basically boils down to this: 'I know I can do that, so I don't do it.'

I know there's a name for this thing, but it has slipped my mind and I can't find it via Google.

Anyone else who knows?

Thanks.

I know I can post in this thread, so... whatever the syndrome is called, I guess I don't have it.

That's promisculence. But I don't think that's what alec means either.

WTF? Thirteen posts and not one of you even gives me a serious answer?

This thread ain't a joke, seriously. There's a name for this sort of thing, I've heard it before, but I can't remember where.

Personally, I'm quite familiar with the feeling, though. Like when I've come up with a sweet plot, great characters, collected a shitload of notes on the book and actually know how the story is supposed to end, this feeling actually pops up: 'I know I could write this book and that knowledge sort of ruins it for me, so I don't feel like writing it anymore.'

I guess maybe people who study psychology would know. Perhaps.

I really expected to find it if I googled 'counterproductive + syndrome', but yeah...

my psychologist: that sounds like you're lazy.

You should write an academic paper on this, alec. Either they'll hail you as a great psychologer, or they'll have to tell you where they read about it before, which may reveal the term you seek. Win/probable win!

Maybe because it doesn't really qualify as a syndrome. Or, this might be just a part of some other social disorder that amounts to more than that. I have read my share of psychology books, but i can't remember the state that you described being mentioned. Try starting searching from a bigger branch, and look into the key words that you type in google, and if they really represent what you mean.

He'll probably win a one way ticket to the fun house that way.
