Darkest of Days

That looks very interesting...

At first I thought the modern day weapons in long ago history was some sort of joke, but after seeing many weapons used from and in many other time periods I now can think of a plot.

I suppose you're part of some time-travel enforcement group and you get sent back in time to stop various other time-travelers from irrevocably altering history either in unforeseen ways or ones they deem bad. That's a unique concept. I'm actually really surprised.

Have you ever wondered what could happen if time travel was a reality? Have you ever thought about the possibility of going back in time to rewrite history for the better? That possibility is a reality in Darkest of Days, where players will travel back and forth through the annals time to relive some mankind’s most dire hours. By fighting through terrible events such as The Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest conflict of the Civil War, and both World War I and II, the player will attempt to save certain key individuals who were never meant to become involved in these truly monstrous events and thereby change human history for the better.

In Darkest of Days, you take on the role of Alexander Morris, an unlucky foot soldier who gets transferred to General Custer’s regiment days before the Battle of Little Bighorn. Moments before his inevitable demise, a futuristic time agent warps in to save Morris and transports him to the future where he is told that time travel is now a reality. However, an unknown faction is attempting to re-write history for their own benefit. Your job is to stop them, and you’ll fight your way through eras spanning thousands of years to do it.

Key features of Darkest of Days include:

* Brand New Engine: The dedicated team at 8monkey Labs has created an all-new, groundbreaking game engine known as Marmoset. The Marmoset engine not only breaks from the all-too present Unreal engine FPS clones flooding the market, but also allows for some amazing graphical capabilities. You’ll fight through epic battles filled with literally hundreds of NPCs on the screen at the same time, all with an advanced AI and all without a hint of graphical slowdown and all set against wide-open environments that are lushly detailed and dynamically lighted.

* Compelling Storyline: Darkest of Days is a compelling, action-packed first-person shooter to be sure, but it’s not just mindless run-and-gun, blow ‘em up gameplay. You’ll have to not only think about how to approach certain key battles and situations, but you’ll also have to take care when fighting – certain key people that were never meant to die will be marked with a special blue aura. If you kill them, you’ll face dire consequences…

* Wreak Havoc with Future Weapons in Antiquity: Something nearly every gamer that’s ever played a shooter based in the past has always wanted is the ability to bring a futuristic weapon back through history and kick some major butt. How differently would Custer’s last stand have turned out if the General was equipped with an M-16 assault rifle? You’ll be able to answer questions like this in Darkest of Days. While not every battle and situation will allow you to wield weapons from the future, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to unleash futuristic fury on your unsuspecting foes.

The trailer was pretty cool and it actually sounds fun, but I've got a feeling that it'll get 4-6/10 in the review department.

Sounds like many episodes of Star Treck Voyager.

". . . but also allows for some amazing graphical capabilities."
Oh God, not V. A.T.S.

I remember reading of a game similiar to this (if it was not it). Some neat things, like killing an important NPC for a particular period of time actually altering the future. Well, that was a year ago now . . . Or maybe, it was all a dream.

I actually kind of like the direction they took, instead of using resources on making the most photorealistic models they (claim to have) used them on displaying many more enemies than most games.

Good trailer. It takes a while but you get the general idea of what the game is about (even if time travel isn't explicitly stated) and it has a sense of humour about it. Gonna look into this when it's released.

Hope it gets released on Steam or retail.

Nice to see some companies expand their list of games to try something new.

Perhaps I might have a new FPS to play on the PC after all this year.

I know its just a game but still, as a soldier in the civil war or a centurion I would be scared like hell when men dressed in strange garb and powerful weapons would appear out of nowhere and mowed my fellow soldiers down with ease.

why do they say the C96 is semi-automatic and then show the 712 Schnellfuer version which is full auto? :)

and yes, faced with modern firepower, warriors from ye olde days would run like hell or surrender.

new, a full auto rifle in WW1 would still work though. the Germans thought they were facing a platoon with semi-automatic rifles when faced with an Enfield "mad minute". :)
didn't ran, but sure as hell were demotivated.

Stupid Ross rifles . . . I could of swarn there were automatics in WW1. Meh, that's what I get for not paying any attention in history.

Would a single guy with a couple magazines, and an automatic make that much of a difference, though? I mean, without training, shooting a controlled burst into multiple targets is . . . hard, no? Then there's clip size . . . Unless you brought a back pack with you.

full automatics were only found in Maxims, Lewis, etc. so machineguns, not in rifles.
(primitive SMGs too, like the C96 712)

semi-automatic rifles existed but were very very rare and usually not reliable. hence the amazement of the germans at meeting an entire platoon with them (but turned out to be SMLE's not semi-autos).

well, some of today's high-tech assault rifles are about as accurate as an average sniper rifle from those days. (not the same range though)
but your survivability in a trench would still be abysmal. :)
i guess the game will feature some advanced armor to 'rationalise' that.

that said, you could take an MacMillan TAC-50 and blow a hole in General Lee's forehead from 2000-2500 meters. or imagine the damage an M2-QBC .50 cal HMG could do to a roman legion. :)

"High speed violation of Geneva Convention" is my new favourite phrase. :D

Wonder if you get to kidnap Hitler like in the old Strontium Dog comic.
