Deathclaw hunting tips

Ah solo play, can be a pain.

Are you playing on the PC or on a console by the way?

Im on PS3, yes I know alot of you guys are PC nuts. But something about being comfortable while I play is appealing. I had FO3 on PC tho. and I have the ultimate edition. After the Divide its on to the Big MT, and then some other quests before the battle of the dam. Then I start my Very Hard Run, then Hardcore, then Hardcore on Very Hard

Ah don't worry I'm on PS3 too
Most people seem like XBOX nuts though

Oh well I don't play on Hardcore mode

I dislike the Xbox, its so cold and sterile, wheres the heart?

Hardcore mode really isnt as hard as it seems, especially with my trusty vault 13 canteen.

Just whatever you do, dont try and pet the Deathclaw baby's. The mother is quite horrifying. (seriously i went in there with EDE, Lilly, an NCR Ranger and Trooper using a glitch from my NCR emergency Radio and still got slaughtered a few times) I almost pissed myself. I am dreading the hunt for the legendary deathclaw and Rawr (from Lonesome Road)

Well I hear it breaks your game if you even touch it

Oh well I never play it cause my companions will die

vs Deathclaw:

Triggered explosives and mines (to severely cripple the mighty beast) in combination with good old poisoned fireman's axe or supersledge to finish the job up close and personal, the way any good business should be concluded.

vs Cazadore:

Launched or thrown explosives to cripple the wings and legs and then good old melee weapons to finish the struggling beast off. And always have spare snake tourniquets in the backpack.

as you have probably observed by now I usually play the Explosives+Melee expertise character.

Obviously you're not a melee type, but if you're having trouble then TucoX's suggestion to use mines might be pretty helpful, if you shoot from behind them and draw the deathclaw in.

Well sometimes if you have other enemies too then you should hope that the deathclaw fights them and loses

hehe, that sounds like a plan! lure some raiders into the deathclaw nest, switch the stealth boy on, stand aside and watch the show

I am a melee type, just low on endurance.

Also I killed rawr lol

I would go Melee with them as I have 95 in Melee with superslam but I feel they might just off me first . . .

Ah I see. Congrats on Rawr, how'd you go about it? (I'll be getting the New Vegas Ultimate Edition soon.)

Flare gun abuse, stealth boy so i can get a good first strike,Plasma caster shots to the legs so he can't lunge followed by the oh baby! Straight to the face. He is pretty easy if you don't let him get in any offense in. Take some med-x, rushing water and psycho and ur good.

On another similar topic, I'm in the couriers mile, which is littered with irradiated deathclaws and marked men. I managed to sneak kill a few deathclaws to clear my way, but then the marked men spotted me and started firing, attracting 3 deathclaws.....fml. And you can't bring anybody with you

Just get to high ground and try to pick them off one by one. In loneome road use the red glare to kill them :)

Well, to actually answer your QUESTION... You gotta "cheat" the Deathclaws in the Divide. Unlike the ENTIRE rest of the game, enemy encounters in the Divide (at least until you finish the DLC) are scripted. Even if you HAD decent (or stellar) Sneak, enemies would detect you, because their scripting prompts them to know where you are, and hunt you down. Since you've killed Rawr, that means you've managed to pass the High Road, but unless you dealt with it, there's one Deathclaw that's scripted to spawn ON TOP OF YOU when you inspect a trailer, which is tricky to avoid. This happens with Tunnelers all the time, and plenty of Marked Men, as well.

The Deathclaws will be the least of your worries if you abuse the Flare Gun. The very first time I encountered Rawr, I got a VERY lucky critical hit on him, and managed to take him down with just 2 Sniper Rifle shots to the face. But for a while after that, when I replayed it, he would mercilessly, effortlessly murder me. I struggled with Rawr for a good hour before I finally just used a Flare Gun... and he became a joke! Hence what I said about "cheating". I know that's what the weapon was intended for, but it still seems cheap, to me. However, the Lonesome Road enemy scripting IS ridiculous, so at least for the duration of that DLC, it feels as if turnabout is more than fair play. =)

I always play on Hardcore mode. I have never played on Casual mode.
Amen! =)

I don't play beyond Hard difficulty, however, and wouldn't recommend it. What the Oblivion Engine calls "difficulty" is just tedium, not challenge. More hit points doesn't make things harder, just silly. On the other hand, I'm looking forward to trying the game with J.E. Sawyer's Difficulty Mod very soon! =D

Im enjoying the game on normal difficulty with hardcore. Never tried any other settings, it already gets ridiculous how much ammo some enemies can consume, expesially in the last DLC.

Yes, the lack of creative, competent, challenging AI routines forces the developers to increase difficulty by up'ing the damage and health, which just isn't difficult at all. It's simply tedious and annoying. I love so much about OWB and LR, but the way the enemies in them soak up bullet and 2-shot me is silly.

I typically waver between Normal and Hard, on Hardcore. Knocking over some enemies with Varmint Rifles just doesn't seem fair, at the same time not being able to tickle those same enemies with a Sniper Rifle is a tad ridiculous.

Aimed shot to the eyes, obviously. Bust out the Turbo Plasma Rifle and go for the eyes.
What?
There are no eyeshots and no Turbo Plasma Rifle in New Vegas?
Then take a shot from afar with your Anti Materiel Rifle while sneaking, when they come running bust out some energy weapon and finish them off.
