In the latest developer diary from Bethesda, world artist Nate Purkeypile describes how, true to the Fallout roots, you can play through the new game as totally different characters. These include an outlaw sniper cannibal, a mêlée guy who turns alcoholic because it "made him swing his hammer harder", a bespectacled pacifist who was once forced by Liam Neeson to kill an insect, an unarmed punk chick who punches cows, and a chick who took to energy weapons because she was ugly.
This is when things started to turn sour. He decided that if they thought he was evil, he was going to show them just how evil he could be. He joined the slavers, he grew a beard and he started stealing things. He was no longer a hero to the people.

The more crimes he committed, the more he enjoyed it. He started amassing more and more wealth from all the people he killed. One day he made a wonderful discovery… people tasted great!

Thanks Ausir.

He wanted the people of the wasteland to know that violence wasn’t the answer, but they would never listen. This made him sad, so he just kept on running.

And while he was running, he would think of Jenny. He wasn't a smart man, but he knew what love was.

... am I doing this wrong ?

Mama always said Jenny would make a great crack whore.

That third one. Man. Hurts the eyes.

Let's be clear, the 3rd picture is how f-ed up the player made his character looked. This is not Beth making a stupid looking NPC...

@Grimhoud
The thing is, Beth doesn't like constructive feedback. They hardly ever listened to their fan bases in the past, why start now? We (the hive mind that is NMA) have known a lot of things about F3 that needed work, but Bethesda has not fixed any of it. The thing is, they just don't realize what Fallout is about. In almost every interview, Pete/Tod/Emil always say just how awesome and violent fallout games were as if that was the only reason they bought the license. They speak of dark humor but all we see are silly, over the top, exploding bodies. They totally destroy the sense of awe in nuclear weapons, making a nuclear catapult. The countless mistakes they made with the fallout universe are not likely to be fixed in F4.

Awww common guys. I think these look pretty good.

Yeah so you can make the PC look like the joker from the latest batman film but isnt that a good thing? More variation and choice in how your character looks.

Surley its obvious that you COULD make a really stupid looking character, or you could make a really cool looking one, I wouldnt be surprised if you could make characters which appear very closley to the low def sprites of F1 / F2.

Also I find the clown woman a pretty good idea - shes clearly one of those crazy sniper canabals. Pretty intimidating. Its not so bad, like in Van Buren you could make a large muscular old man with a big grey afro, beard and silly mustache with a strength of 1 if you wanted.

Edit: That armour looks more like a variation of Metal Armour to me.

Its going to be like playing with twisted Barbie and her dollhouse.

That stupid looking face in the 3rd picture pretty much sums up what Bethesda has done to Fallout.

Well, I've been at NMA for over a month now, I think, and this comment seems to sum up about every single post I've seen here regarding Fallout 3. You guys(yes, I'm generalizing because it's true)
are basing your entire opinions on this game over screenshots and gameplay vids, which is pretty ridiculous. I still don't understand WHAT Bethesda has done that is so bad.

And no, I'm not employed by Bethesda. I'm just a hardcore gamer that appreciates GOOD games, and I don't see how Fallout 3 has no chance to become one, according to many of the posts I've seen here.
