Do they sell Standard Monitors (Non-Widescreen) anymore??

I need a new monitor and I can't stand all these widescreen monitors. I can't get used to them, I refuse to get used to them :x ; they just aren't "natural" to me. Hell, I don't even like widescreen televisions.

My old monitor was a Samsung SyncMaster 914v LCD; that came out around 2005 or so. Its 4:3 and its not that old, so what, these companies/stores just throw out all other monitors because they aren't widescreen?

Everywhere I go, all the stores sell only widescreen. I just want a standard 4:3 (or close enough) monitor. Anyone know of any good standard monitors out today, or have they become extinct like a Tasmanian Tiger? :(
 
While I can respect a good old-fashioned attitude, you do realise widescreen is better suited for the human eyes than 4:3, don't you?

Yeah, standard are being made less for exactly that reason, but I'm sure you can dig up one via an online store somewhere.

It's based on the golden rectangle (though I think it's like .1 or .2 off or something), which I believe is generally accepted as "pleasing to the human eye".

But even if that weren't the case, simple question: is your field of vision square, or rectangular?
 
Interesting..... but I still want a standard monitor :D .

By the way, 4:3 isn't all that square. But yes, widescreen is significantly less square.
 
You think you have troubles. I'm looking for a CRT monitor. One of those high res ones that came out just before they stopped making them. :P
 
You'll get used to it. My advice is to move the monitor about ~1-1.5ft away from your face so it takes up a good chunk of your FOV, then gradually moving it backwards every few days until it's at your preferred location.

After a week or so you'll never look back.


Oh, and make sure you get a good sized one. I consider 23'' the minimum.

Neither. It's circular. Unless your that guy.

Anyways, widescreen is more pleasant because it gives the feeling of depth perception and an encompassing view of the picture that is more palpable and realistic.

You do realize you can force 4:3 aspect ratio through video card drivers? With a widescreen display you will have black bars on the sides, but that shouldn't be overly distracting. Either way, it beats wasting time looking fruitlessly for a 4:3 display. Another advantage is that should you decide to join us in the 21st century, you can easily deactivate aspect ratio scaling instead of buying yet another new display.
 
Nah, uselessly spending money is good for the economy.

24" is the last meaningful size jump, as everything above that is the same resolution (1920*1200). Until you get into 30" territory that is, but those are both ridiculously expensive, and aren't that much more useful than a 24".

I meant for comfort, as it's easier to make the transition from 4:3 to widescreen with a big widescreen compared to one of those 17'' deals.

Yes. Given that resolution height is greatly limited on the smaller (<21", I'd say) widescreen monitors, using those seems mostly annoying. Though it works for some people. It's really, as always, a case of what you want it for.
 
Thanks for the help everyone. Guess I'll take the leap into the 21st Century (are there flying cars yet? :lol: )

I've been looking at an HP 2009m 20" 16:9, it looked kind of, er, wide, in the store, a bit wider than the other widescreens ones next it, but that could just be me. I really don't want to spend a lot of money, and this thing is on sale.

Any thoughts on this one? I know it's been said that around 23" is good, but is a 20" good as well?
 
Well, it depends on what you want, and what resolution you want.

Personally, I think 24" is usually the best way to go, and the Samsung 2443BW (or similar Samsung model) is usually the best value for money, that I know of.

That said, it's probably best to set a budget first and then see what you can get within that budget. Be wary of the resolution of a monitor, too, as a bigger monitor doesn't necessarily mean a higher resolution.

And 16:9 might be more widescreen than other models, a lot of computer monitors work on a 16:10 aspect ratio.
 
Newegg has a pretty good selection of monitors and tons of customer reviews. They've usually got some good sales going on with free shipping on hot items and whatnot. I'd check there before you slum it up at your local circuit city.

What? 'course it isn't, you tard, you have two eyes, not one.

This is the normal human field of vision. A kind of...blob thingy, really (white is both eyes, grey is peripheral, black is no view)
