Do You Ever Play As the Opposite Gender?

If I remember correctly, there was a study done on this back in the early 2000s with online games. Men would often gender bend because female avatars were treated more favorably by other players which gave them a tactical advantage. Women liked to customize their avatars more and found playing as a man offered them less options.

Personally as a man, I usually make my characters male for the purposes of relatability. I did always play as a girl in Pokemon Crystal however, mostly because it was a new and exciting feature at the time. Crystal also sounded better as a female if you liked to use the naming conventions from Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, and Silver.
 
Depends on the game, but it usully goes like this.

For the first playthrough I play as a male character because I can relate to him more easily and experience the world.
However, subsequent playthroughs often include female characters, which I tend to craft to detail in a roleplaying sense - if you already know the world and the story, you can create a character to fit it better (I do this regardless of gender).

Also, I tend to spend more time to create a female character that I will find attractive. Whereas I go with a dude as "good enough" or even skip the editor, I spend at least half an hour on average while creating a she.

That being said, I've yet to complete any Fallout with a female character.

Guilty here. Made a Legion aligned chick who is a lesbian. Even went as far not telling Veronica that i destroyed the Brotherhood of Steel. Also, got Christine to like me because three way with Veronica.
 
It depends upon the game, but it seems I have been stuck trying to make Ellen Ripley - clone for every RPG I play. When it comes to male characters, it usually comes off as a total joke or overly exaggrated one, be it from national or race standpoint.
 
Sometimes I play as the opposite gender in games if I can create a lesbian hot chick. But I mostly play as a man in most games.
 
There's so many male protagonists that if I get a choice I'll pick female simply for that reason.
 
I only ever play females if classes/jobs are gender dependent and I want to play that class. Otherwise I always play as male.

I do understand the distinction between sex and gender

However, when it comes to Video Game Protagonists, I would argue the word "Gender" is more appropriate.

When you play as a male or female character in an RPG, usually the core differences are the way the world reacts to you, eg. characters will refer to you as what you picked, you may approach situations differently because you are treated as male or female. Usually the main difference is in regards to the way society treats the character, the roles and expectations imposed on them, ect., all of which are more to do with the social gender of the character than they are to do with the pure biological sex of the character.

Thus, I'd argue the word "Gender" is appropriate in this context.

Ah, your character would have been very interested in meeting Valius, one of the companions made by Kris Takahashi. It's not on the nexus, it's on his personal website (just google "interesting NPCs"). Won't spoil anything, but it's quite an interesting take on the sex subject within the legion, and not enough legion friendly followers anyway.
