Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
The Enclave claims humans on the mainland have changed into a new mutant variation of the species. Do you guys think this is true or not.
 
I guess I'm on the fence with it lol. John Henry Eden isn't 100% all there. He's also an old computer. The Enclave might also spout some crazy nonsense to make themselves look good. On the other hand, humanity has been exposed to so much FEV and Radiation it might actually be true. It does sound plausible.
 
I think everyone evolved somehow, unless they lived in a remote place untouched by either the blast, the winds or anything that came after.

The ghouls, super-mutants and other things being the most obvious. The wastelander because they were exposed all their lives (and their ancestors too) to high level of radiation, and possibly residual FEV (if you subscribe to this theory).

But those would stayed in sealed, fully isolated and self-sufficients bunkers like the Enclave and vault dweller evolved in their own way, being deprived of open space, sunlight and fresh air. Those people shouldn't be able to face direct sunlight without sunglasses and sunscreen, would have pale skin, and a weak immune system, as they had been sheltered from any outside disease (viruses and bacterias of the outside world would have evolved too).

So ultimately, nobody would have the same constitution as prewar people. On the other hand, mutants or not, they should all still considered as humans.

They mean that as in there's so much damage to DNA via massive radiation damage, that mainland humans are completely fucked and unowrthy.

It's not that they're new humans - they're the same humans - but they live in an environment that constantly, constantly damages them, consume from that environment, work within it. It increases the chances of mutation, miscarriages, and life-long birth defects.

It's not pretty but it's nothing major; they're not a new species. Just live in a very, very shitty environment.
 
Yeah, I think it would be interesting of the Enclave had been right all along. Imagine if mankind was Just slowly mutating towards degeneracy.
 
I think the story reads better if the "mutations" are basically totally benign and unnoticeable within human DNA, but enough to send the Enclave on a neurotic course to justify their eugenic 2nd apocalypse.

There's a scene in a Black Mirror episode about some sort of tyrannical regime killing "lesser" people, where a cliche'd intelligent and cool CIA spook just loses his shit ranting and raving like a maniac about the "shit" in their genetics, listing off stuff that has barely anything to do with genetics. I always figured that was the Enclave's MO and what made them scary. The last surviving remnant of the US Government...and they are completely bonkers. Despite their actions being very serious and their appearance as very organized and properly governmental, they are just mentally fucked. Makes them a more creepy villain IMO if they are even less rational than the Cronenberg blob from the prior game despite being the last strand of Old World America. To leave that lingering question if they're totally far gone from the years after the Great War, or if Pre-War USA was just about there already.

Hell unless the mutations allowed for multi-coloured hair or weird skin colors....

The mutations and damage to the DNA in Fallout humans is barely noticeable. In f2, you could grow? a extra toe, that was about it.

It also rings of Colonel Green doing the same thing in the PNW after the Third World War in Star Trek. Due to the Shuttle Random Event, I'm going to assume they knew about it.
 
He means that the humans on the mainland have been exposed to background radiation since the bombs fell. They haven't noticeably mutated or anything like that, it's just that they have radiation in their system.

Besides they've actually proved they're correct by using their FEV vaccine on vault 13 residents and Arroyo tribals. The tribals died but the vault dwellers survived, because of the radiation in their system.
 
I think it would be interesting if the Enclave were right from the point of view that most of the population has received extreme genetic damage resulting in birth defects and cancers instead of anything sci-fi or comic bookish. Take Caesar for example: he’s suffering from a brain tumor that will most likely end any sort of progress he can make with his invented society. Society will be able to make very little progression on a large scale (say 500 years) without populations that haven’t been significantly impacted by radiation. In this way the Enclave are sort of right that mutation will result in the downfall of humanity, but not in a way that justifies their insane actions.
 
Has anyone seen wayward pines? Imagine if things in the Fallout world were going in that direction.
 
Humans in Fallout-verse are of course mutated/different than today's humans, but then again natural evolution would make that occur over 100's of years anyways.

The changes humanity have obtained seem mostly limited to radiation resistance and overall toughness (Burned Man).
