Driving?

How should it be to drive in FO3? Should it be implemented in the original map format, or should you have actual control over the car?

I liked the way it was in Fallout 2. Extra storage, fast way from here to there and a nice way to get rid of your Plasma Rifle Ammo...

But if there's actual control, I hope they do it better than in Tactics... sometimes I got really pissed when the car was acting stupid again... those controls kinda sucked...

I say you should have no driving.

We'd do well with a refreshing lack of vehicles. The only vehicle suffer would possibly accept is the steam-driven truck concept from Fallout 1, and only if it's not available to PCs.

How about a draisine or brahmin-powered railcar that only follows a set of rusty tracks and is very limited in where you can take it? Sort of like the Rail Nomads in Wasteland.

Oh yeah, a train...

You'd have to figure out a way to fit it into the setting (brahmin-powered is not my cup of tea), but trains can work fine in the PA setting. The way they were planning to put it into Van Buren wasn't half-bad

Well, since we are dealing with the oblivion engine, we can't rule out nuclear horses.

Nah, only on the islands... the zilt beaches are perfect for motor cross matches... with flood barriers as obstacles to avoid.

Anyhoo, I think they should keep it like in Fallout 2.

I don't think it should be too much more complex than in FO2. The car was handy but not a game-breaker. It would be cool to see the car drive around; i.e. when you click to leave town, your party gets in it, the lead player starts it and drives it out of town. There might even be an option to drive it directly a bit ala GTA (meaning the perspective), but IMHO only for the purpose of pulling up outside a store to simplify buying/selling goods stored in the vehicle, or similar purposes; but given the scarcity of vehicles in the Fallout universe, there shouldn't be "Car Combat" like GTA, or if someone is stupid enough to do it he should be realistically penalized; i.e. using the car for cover in combat risks flat tires, broken glass, burst radiators, and generally loss of the machine. And aside from that I can't think of a good way to handle vehicles in a turn-based system. Shadowrun (tabletop) did it passably, but again, using the car in combat situations should generally be impossible and when not should be realistic (i.e. a bad idea).

I didn't find it a setting breaker. Not like New Reno or SFO were. I think at least part of the setting breaking of the car was how it seemed a little tacked on. If it had been better "immersed" I don't think it would have seemed that way to you at all.

ya, just keep it nice and simple, I agree entirely. A faster way to get around and a place to stash your shit, no more, no less.

Grand Theft Auto: Vault City!

I'd like to register that this was one the coolest comments I've read in forums in years! Truly nice dude!

For the topic, I'd like to join car battles in Mad Max style...

Unless the setting is pushed back a few hudndred years to much sooner after the war, this isn't likely. One climactic battle that sacrifices a few working vehicles is one thing, but if car combat is engaged in regularly it stretches the probability of the developed setting and scarcity of working vehicles therein. They exist, yes, but are generally too precious to be wasted for the edge they give in a single combat which, unless they are millitary vehicles hardened for the riggors of battle, would be extremely taxing on them and require repairs almost definitely not at hand in the wasteland and probably beyond the means of the player.
