Easter eggs in mods

Blackened

I should set a cutom tite
Were Fallout's Easter eggs just about 50's stuff? Or were there references to more recent things? And, in case they gave references just to 50's things, do you think that a good Fallout mod should have references to more modern things, or just to 50's?

I'm asking, because I'm planning a mod. If it ever comes out, it will be after a few years when I'll have the time, and it won't be anything big.

I'm not sure that this thread's place is in "Fallout General Modding". The topic of discussion is "should we put ONLY 50's references in our mods?".

By the way, I think the Cheezy Poofs are a South Park reference. But I'm not sure that South Park is before Fallout and I'm too lazy to check, so it may be other way around.

I'd say there are references and easter eggs about every era, not only the 50s. Monty Python was later than 50s, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy even more so.

Besides, I find this whole "let's stick to the 50s setting only" attitude a little bit an overkill. IMHO, Fallout universe is only based on the 50s setting - it goes for the looks of most things and some attitudes concerning the model of society/habits/lifestyle/etc.

Still, I think that it's not wrong to add something more modern, like modern architecture, ideals, etc. If it's but an easter egg, I don't see a problem here.

Anyway, if you do the mod and it has some non-50s easter eggs, I will certainly not accuse you of not being true to the spirit of Fallout :)

Good luck!

Thanks. I think the "Fallout has references to many non-50s stuff" answers my question.

Well, I hope all my references being about modern things won't look too un-Fallouty. If the mod ever comes out.

In general the Easter eggs in Fallout were things that the Black Isle designers found personally amusing, or entertaining, or referenced things they enjoyed - (common popular cultural events that effected them in some way), such as the Doctor Who, or the falling whale from - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Monty Python's Holy Grail, Star Wars, etc. There is a write up on many of the Easter eggs in the various games (Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics) columns on the opening NMA page. Some of the references are very obscure, so be careful not to get too carried away with references that you and only your little brother find funny, or others won’t understand the context. In my opinion subtle and clever references - over - obvious and in your face references. Good luck with the mod.

I'd add that if your mod is going to be an add-on for regular FO2 (as opposed to a TC), imo, you should try to keep the easter eggs at an absolute minimum... (FO2 already has bloody hordes of that stuff).

Good references = no references at all.

Also, focus on setting/design/whatever, not some stupid references (who the fuck need this shit anyway ) otherwise you may end with silly game, like Fallout 2.

I agree Conti…Fallout 2 took the whole Easter egg hunt a little too far. But I personally have mixed feelings, because I often find them stupid, but enjoyable at the same time. Ultimately Fallout wasn’t meant to be taken too seriously – it’s a piece of video game pulp fiction, and it’s a great ride, (but yet it feels so real, and sad, and poignant at the same time)…and that’s why it’s a masterpiece…

My personal favorite is the "I wish i had a limit break" or something in reference to one of the best RPGs ever made, Final Fantasy VII.

My personal favorite is reference to Paris Hilton's New BFF or Tila Gozilla's A Shot At Love - the best TV shows ever made. And I want it as whole location full of quests, or better - total conversion! I think post-apoc-retro-future is the best place for such thing. Seriously.

Fallout 1's Easter Eggs (the special encounters, anyway) were all focused on the 50s and 60s, though there were some maller in-jokes that were more up-to-date.

Fallout 2, however, didn't care.

BLLLLLAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!! :puke:

EDIT:
Sorry Conti caught me off guard with that pic, tossed my cookies on the spot.

Isn't that what FO3: New Vegas is for?

Fallout 3: New Vegas is more or less the same to what Fallout 2 is to Fallout - "professional" TC you can purchase. The same shitty engine, the same assets, etc...

so long as you don't actually go easter egg hunting in fallout 2, they're enjoyable, but going out of your way to find them makes them a bit silly

I'm still unsure of this one, but I'm pretty sure the line when recruiting myron (something like a pack of radaway, wearing a really old jumpsuit, and having a full tank of gas) is a blue brother reference, at the start of the greatest car chase scene ever, this would be my favorite easter egg
