The game Defcon from Introversion Software's gone gold, and is now available for boxed purchase or direct download.

It's Global Thermonuclear War, and nobody wins.
But maybe - just maybe - you can lose the least.

So, why don't you fire a few dozen warheads at them Reds/Capitalist Pigs/Filthy Rogue States after work?

Of course, if you don't feel like spending money, there's always Flash Wargames1983 to play.

It is a very cool game. A nice way to pass some time in between things. Love that second screenshot you put up Silencer. Whole lot of nukes.

Yes sir. So far, I'm as good at playing, as George W. Bush is at being president.

But still, even when you lose, it's beautiful.

It should be mentioned that the demo has a much play-ability: You can play a full game, with bots or online/LAN, with two other people. The only thing you don't get it the ability to change game modes (which really aren't that different). And if you do like it, you can purchase it online and put the key into the demo client and unlock the full version.

Of course, I don't have to worry about any of that since I pre-ordered it; that free physical copy should be here any day now...

The game is totaly unrealistic. I won't bore you with the details, but take it from a seasoned military strategy gamer: This game is completely got it's head on backwards when it comes to tactical realisim. For one thing, in real life ICBMs move a whole lot faster than even the fastest jet bomber does.... but not in this game. That's just fucktarded. And where's the MIRVs, and the SDI defense satellites, and the GCI radar, and the AWAC planes, and the HAVCAPs?
I'm not even going to get into what the fuck they were thinking when they made ICBM silos do double duty as SAM sites... and making it so they can't fire SAMs when they're firing nukes. WTF? That's completely NOT how it works, guys. SAM sites are totally separate units from ICBM silos. Not even the same frigging department.
Oh, and no aircraft carrier in the world presently carries nuclear weapons, not even the US supercariers do that anymore. SSBNs, yes. Carriers, no. Clear?

Sure it's a "fun" game, but in terms of realism it is a farce.

Just had to register to point out the fact you are a complete spacker Sarge. Show me where this game claims to be a real world simulation of a global thermo-nuclear war.

I hope your post is a sarcastic satire, as there is no possible way you can be that daft.

"Seasoned military strategy gamer."

^ Stopped taking you seriously at that point.

Get a grip. Silly kid making me waste my time registering just to point out your idiocy.

My, my, don't we feel strongly about DEFCON. If that game is so great, why don't you marry it or something?

Seriously, The Sarge made a valid complaint. DEFCON may not be a full-fledged simulation, but certain elements such as merging a SAM site with a missile silo are illogical and cannot be attributed to reality abstraction.

You, on the other hand, crossed the line by flaming him in a very crass manner. Keep acting like that and your stay here will be a short one.

meh, very few strat games dont use this kind of simplifying things or making things harder.

i'd side with S_M on this issue.

Played the demo of DefCon this morning, wanted to take a look at the Wargames1983 flash game, but all I saw was 404. :(

I have a copy stashed somewhere on my drive...

a rule of gamedesign; whenever there is a conflict between realism and gameplay, gameplay always wins
if this was made a simulation, it would make a fancy screensaver but be rather boring to play
things like combining the two functionalities makes no sense in any sense, except that it brings a new element to concider when playing
if you launch a nuke, you announce your silo location and everything around the silo is unprotected while the SAM is disabled
stuff like this allows complex strategies and very varied wars, with very simple pawns

but personally i would like to see an ultrarealistic simulation of nuclear war.. with realistic casualty estimates and post-war fallout and possible climate changes etc simulated
it would be more like one of those nerd toys like google earth that you can play with, but isn't really a useful application or a game either
