Fallout 2, For Real, LARPing anyone?

It Wandered In From the Wastes

A group of Russian Fallout 2 fans decided to organize a game convention near one of Russia’s old abandoned missile launch sites.

On June 21st, 2009, at one of the abandoned air-defense bases in St. Petersburg region, a game based on “Fallout 2? universe took place, organized by “Albion” workshop. Some 300 people participated in the game, working with workshop group, tech support group and emergency/medical services. And, of course, the players themselves, who prepared for the game over the course of many months. Much was accomplished by the workshop crew: sealed military bases, including the memorable Sierra from Fallout II, were built; plot and game coordination accomplished, including rapid response by the creators to changes in game environment. Players were hard at work as well. They made authentic costumes, modified airsoft guns to the point of being unrecognizable, outfitted a special car, operated establishments such as cinema, working radio station, few bars, hospital, casino and much more. Combined efforts of workshop people and players made the world come to life for two short days.

Kinda old i guess, and im sure it was touched on by someone, but i thought it was pretty cool so if your like me and missed it.

awesome indeed, we definitively should do that in my country, sad that i don't know many fallout fans even to get a P&P running, even less a live action.

Too bad Fallout is now looked at as nothing more than a "lulzfactory" in America. I'm pretty sure the interest in a serious Fallout LARP would be nill. Still, if there was one anywhere in the US, I would love to travel and participate.

What do you guys mean when you say "lulz"?

Okay so I read that and all it means is humor.

Are you somehow implying Fallout wasn't funny ever? because that's simply not the case. One of the best parts of the Fallout games for me is how it balances serious stuff with comedy.

The problem is that 3 had problems balancing seriousness and "lulz." 3 is the highest selling Fallout game. So the general public sees Fallout as Fallout 3. So there's little interest in a serious Fallout.

I'm pretty sure it's like NewReno says.

Fallout had some quality humor, from clever use of pop-culture mock-ups to dark humor, mixed with great writing, and all in an original setting that is dark in many ways, yet can be incredibly funny. Even disturbingly so.

Fallout 2 went a bit of a wrong way to me. It is a great, funny game, but humor was at moments simply over-the-top. Several times I even felt that the writers were just trying to hard to make me laugh.
It had its moments, undeniably, but just isn't the first game.

Fallout 3 went wrong at this. Just look at dev's diaries. They though that nailing a character's head to the wall was the funniest thing ever.
These guys were just incompetent and confused to create good humor akin to previous games - which isn't easy, really, with the confusion that came from Fallout 2 and the generals devs' lack of understanding for the setting (at least in some aspects).

It's not hard to imagine why many people don't take Fallout 3 seriously, even without even being very familiar with it (I mean, just look at stuff like Zeta).
And then stuff which NewReno has written about kicks in...

3 was rather serious. It had it's dumb fun bits but the atmosphere was by far the most bleak of any fallout (what with everything looking like The Road and all).

Oh, don't be such a nitpicker and cosplay hater, Surf.

Eh, he has a point. You know me I'm not one to judge (only Allah can do that IMO) but it is rather childish to do such things after age 9. Maybe it's just my psychotic Indian upbringing shining through though.

3 wasn't serious. It was just overly dark and bleak, and that doesn't really make it serious. It makes it a badly implemented game with poor devs' understanding of the whole setting. .
The developers aimed at that horrible, dark, no-hope, no-survival post-apocalyptic theme which not only doesn't fit the setting, it is also highly inconsistent with all previous games.
Also, I wouldn't call the game serious just because it has no quality humor.

And about The Road, I'm yet to read the book, but from my knowledge, it is set few years after the cataclysm (which isn't necessarily nuclear war, as far as I am aware). Fallout 3 is set 200 years after the Great War.
You can't really compare the two, which only shows how wrong did the devs picture a post-apoc world (at least a Fallout one) in their heads.

I understand that someone doesn't like cosplaying (I'm not a big fan of it either), but constantly ranting about it is a bit pointless. Not that Surf was ranting, but this isn't the first discussion of this kind.

I simply see no point in people complaining about something which doesn't really concern them.
These guys (whoever they are) obviously had some quality time together. They created a nice homage to something which they have in common, and were successful in it (yes, horrible cosplay can to be laughed at, but I don't see anything wrong with this one).

If you're laughing at something like this, you can also laugh at pictures, fanfic, Fallout-inspired music etc. which is also a sort of a homage. And honestly, I see no point in it.

Why being vocal about something which didn't, doesn't and won't ever really concern you?

Just my opinion...
